Battelle pulls the plug on co2 sequestration

Battelle has announced that Greenville is no longer under consideration as a site for co2 sequestration. More info as it develops.

We believe that next to all the people that worked to stop the sequestration, we should be thankful to the Andersons. We believe they may have made the tough decision to call this thing off. Greenville has a great future because the citizens have taken it out of the hands of the politicians. Our forefathers - framers of the Constitution would smile if they could see the people of this little underrated town overcoming a mandate by the federal government in Washington. This event in time could eclipse the signing of the Treaty of Greenville in historical importance. At no time in recent history has such a victory for a small town been so important to America’s future. ~ Charles E. Reier MD, Rebecca A. Reier

While many may question the power of the people in statewide and national issues, Darke County has proven that locally, people can still have an impact on what happens to them. This was a non-partisan fight, and we won! Congratulations to all those who fought so hard for us. ~ Bob Robinson

This is great news for not only Darke County but also for the State of Ohio. It also proves that when citizens unite as one they can do anything. ~ Jim Zehringer

Now, as I write this, the fight is reportedly over, at least in Darke County. It has shown what can be accomplished by citizens unified behind a noble pursuit; that do not allow themselves to become fragmented by partisanship and personalities. ~ Jim Surber (*this is an unauthorized quote from a person we're pretty sure is the actual Jim Surber)

Since no one has responded to your question as to whether the CO2 project would have created any new jobs, I would think the answer is "NO".

Most of us are just thankful that NO NEW jobs are being created by this ridiculous proposal.

  4. I want to thank all of the people who spearheaded and got it stopped! Although I was at several of the meetings, without your efforts, Darke County would still be worrying about this. As others have said, we also need to thank the Andersons for listening to the citizens of Darke County

  5. Great job all. Now we just need everyone who was involved in this to back our City School District in getting the funds to build a new middle school. Our community needs to pull together. Possible business will not come to town if our school's are outdated and overcrowded.

  6. This fight may be over for Greenville and The Andersons/Marathon LLC Plant but please don't forget that we have two other Ethanol plant nearby. This fight may now move just across our western border to Union City Indiana(Cardinal Ethanol) or Portland (POET). We are all now well aware that the underground effects will spread to more than just the local area were the sequestration occures. We need to keep our eyes and ears open and also help our neighboring communities fight this if necessary. I would hate for us to fight this hard just to have this experiment take place just outside of our counties borders instead.

  8. Has there been any official statement as to why the decided not to?

I mean everyone assumes it is because of the protesting, but are there other reasons?

No probably about equal... People outside the area will not have heard about either...

  10. I do believe this is awesome for our community, but no means does it rival or equal the importance of the Treaty of Greeneville.

  11. There are definite similarities between the CO2 sequestration proposal and the Treaty of Greeneville, from the Native Americans' perspective.

  12. A great big THANK YOU to Ann, Jan, Julie, Enid, Lynn, Jim and a whole host of others that spearheaded this rally and kept it going in a very honorable manner. It would have never happened without your efforts. Our hats are off to all.

  13. Thanks to all that got this stopped, but Enid gave thanks to Sharrod Browm? Where did he publicly oppose CO2 sequestration because I'd love to see the press release where he did. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Jim Zehringer was the only high ranking offical that spoke out against the CO2 sequestration.

  14. Jim Zehringer was the highest ranking official to speak out publicly in opposition, that is true and he deserves our respect and appreciation. However, most things with politics are accomplished without a podium. Don't discount Senator Brown's contribution.

  15. Great point on Sherrod Brown. He does a lot of his best work quietly behind closed doors with his closest aides close by ... just like his recent healthcare town hall meeting.

  16. Usually the behind closed doors stuff involves suitcases full of money, that's where he should have stepped up the the podium and publicly speak out against the sequestration. I don't think it's to much to ask for from our elected officals, there are to may dealings happening behind closed doors.

  17. In case you did not know, Sherrod Brown has sponsored legislation that gives financial incentives for carbon sequestration projects. It's green energy! This is easy to find on the web folks so I am shocked he is getting credit for this when he is clearly on record in favor of carbon capture and sequestration.

  18. To Anonymous 11:07 and 1:21;
Do you really believe Greenville citizens collected suitcases full of money to get this stopped? Some politicians actually help constituents without payola.
Yes, Sen. Brown has helped facilitate carbon sequestration projects. But he helped stop the action in Greenville because of the overwhelming opposition of the people; and the misrepresentations made by Battelle early in the process.

  20. I sure would love to see the documented proof where Brown helped facilitate carbon sequestration in Greenville because I'm not seeing it.
As far as the suitcases full of money, that was geared towards your higher ups in Columbus and DC.

  21. Sen. Brown did not facilitate sequestration in Greenville; he helped to stop it. So, one more time, who filled the suitcases?

    ReplyDelete
  22. And I ask one more time, what evidence do you have where Sen. Browm helped stop it?

  23. I have the word of his top aide, given to me by phone this past Thursday morning.

  24. Jim, If that's true, send a 'thank you' to Sherrod Brown for helping to avert a local disaster created by the disastrous environmental policies of his party ... ;)
