Blockbuster closing?

From the chat: "the signs are up at Blockbuster on Wagner Ave., that it's going out of business." (Details 17:05 12/10/09)

If true, it's not really surprising, as a lot of people have switched over to Netflix - and most everybody with cable can get pay-per-view.

  1. the signs have been up since at least late last week. Sunday was the last day to rent anything, so i'd assume they might be open for a week or 2 more? do they have to quit renting a month in advance since they don't charge you for lateness for several weeks?

Regardless, yes, mail rentals as well as digital distribution have killed this business model. It was archaic and isn't going to last much longer (obviously). When you can stream and download HD movies, why even bother with physical media, other than to hold on to an outdated method of media delivery?

Premiere Video is likely dancing its own jog at the moment...

  2. Blockbuster grew while George Bush was president. Barack Hussein Obama comes around and look what happens. The liberal agenda is to destroy blockbuster. Palin in 2012! Vote out the incumbents.

  3. With all due respect, what does Bush vs. Obama have to do with Blockbuster closing?

  4. It was a joke!

All of a sudden democrats have no sense of humor ... why is that?

  7. Why would anyone go to Blockbuster and pay $5-$6 for a movie when you can go to places like Red Box and pay $1.07 for a movie? Places like Blockbuster and Premier are killing themselves, not the city leaders, the liberals, or the crusty conservatives.

  8. DJ,

can you link to an article describing internet trolls? haha, I think some people on here don't realize that it is routine to make outrageous comments just to get some ire out of people.

    tl;dr: Lighten up, francis.

  9. The comments here crack me up. How sensitive some people have become. Funny, but very sad at the same time... there is no such thing as "a joke" or "funny/sarcastic comment" anymore. Lord help those of you who were offended. By the way...don't worry, obama will save the world and Blockbuster will re-open as soup kitchen.

  11. I couldn't believe they even opened the place. The mass death of video rental stores had already started when they built it.

The Netflix model is simply superior. It's cheaper, more convenient, has an impressively expansive library of content, and they offer bonuses like tailored movie suggestions and "instant" movies. And if you still want to get a particular movie without waiting, those rental machines are all over the place now.

It is unfortunate that Darke County and Greenville will have a few less jobs. My hope is that a business providing more and higher paying jobs than Blockbuster will lease the space.
