Please respond to Darke County Friends of the Shelter

The Darke County Friends of the Shelter want to know if you think a Dog Park would benefit the community. It would be located next to the Animal Shelter on County Home Road. Please let us know by emailing us: here.

  1. To many unanswered questions. Does the county own the land or will it have to be purchased? Is it for the benefit of the public or just a run area for the pound? Who is going to be responsible for liabilty if something happens? Just a few questions and not enought informatioin.

  2. A Dog Park would be nice, but the only problem that I see with one is if people won't do the "pooper scooper" thing when they just walk their dogs, what makes you think they would clean up after their dog in a Dog Park? Other animals can catch a myriad of things from fecus left from animals.

Also, how are you going to patrol whether or not the dogs that are going into the park have had all their necessary shots plus flea and tick protection?

  3. Why don't you make this a poll?

  4. The shelter already owns the land. It would be a public dog park, not for the dogs in the shelter.

  5. Great idea, bad location. A dog park needs to be easily accessible for drivers and walkers. Ideally a more centralized, populated location would be an area in the city park. Or three designated areas, one north, one central and one to the south but that could be over-kill. The biggest problem would be the need for at least one full-time, paid individual to perform clean up duties 7 days a week. Or relying on a dependable group of volunteers. Living in Arcanum I've often thought the property next to the Post Office would make a great dog park. Arcanum is not large enough for a centralized location. A plus is that the property is located on a main street which makes it safe(r) and far more easily patrolled.

  6. Not enough information to make a decision and what will be the cost to the tax payors for this park? The community needs a lot of help, such as creating jobs and trying to bring business back in the community first and foremost.

  7. I agree with "Anonymous" February 6:26 post. I walk my dogs often and see the results of those that choose not to be good owners and clean up after their pets. The shot issue is also a concern. I would most likely choose not to use such a park.

  8. We go to Tipp City or Celina to their dog parks and they are great!! They have one for small dogs and one for larger dogs and our dog loves running and playing with other dogs and no danger of getting hit by cars. Owners clean up after their pets as it should be anywhere they walk ther dogs!

  9. Those are all great questions. But is there a need or a want for a dog park? If the "Friends of the Shelter" are going to run it and maintain it, on County owned property, would people come to use it?

  10. we go to Montgomery County Dog Park and love it. You as the owner of your dog are responsible at this park. We have never had a problem and they have a place for the doggy poop that you are responsible for picking up, etc. Our dogs love playing with other dogs.
They have a nice place and I think Darke County could have a nice place. It's called responsibility of your own dogs that helps make the park nice.
