Serving and Learning In Darke County

"The best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person." ~ Andy Rooney

Students participating in the Opportunity 13 program are at it again. Meeting the needs of businesses and organizations in the county has become a priority for Opportunity 13 this year. Through the Ohio Learn and Serve project, students are not only providing a service, but are focused on creating partnerships with community organizations. In addition to this, students develop skills and understanding of specific content standards for each activity.

One of the several Service Learning partnerships established this year is with Resthaven Retirement Community. Students organize and implement recreational activities with the residents. Some of the activities include bowling, cornhole and Wii fitness games. An added bonus to the project is the positive social interactions between the students and the residents. The students share this experience as being fun, inspiring and motivational. They enjoy encouraging the residents’ participation and motivating them to keep trying.
