BASF volunteers assist in the 2009 Beautification Day

No comments:
As the winter weather is hopefully eliminated from the forecast for the next seven months, the signs of spring itch to come back to life. The cool, crisp air with the sun peeking through ignites a planting spirit in many of us. That spirit is also coming alive in downtown Greenville!

Striving to blend community pride with downtown bonding, the Design Committee of Main Street Greenville rejuvenated the flower program to encompass the whole community by initiating the Adopt A Box Program. The beauty of downtown reaches far more than its boundaries by having assistance from area businesses, organizations, and families.

On May 22, a day we are calling Downtown Beautification Day, the downtown will come to life with people bustling around planting color into the earth. The adoptee of each flower box will engage in volunteering their time to keep downtown growing. The enthusiasm and response from the community shows that this project is long over due.

The vision of this program is to see families laughing, co-workers communicating, and organizations building teamwork. Downtown is a place for people to come together, socialize, and feel connected with the rest of the community. What better way to allow that to happen then a beautification day? This day will be a small movement towards people picking up the shovel, moving the dirt, and planting the seeds for the future.

If this is something that excites you, please give Main Street Greenville a call at 548.4998 to adopt a downtown box. The deadline to register is April 30. Hurry a limited number of boxes are available.

President Obama joins local law enforcement in drug bust

16 comments:
On Sunday (a day of rest) Obama took a major step to clean up the drugs that end up in Darke County by making a surprise visit to Afghan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul. He immediately took Karzai to task for not cleaning up the poppy fields (heroin) that are run by Karzai’s relations and cronies. Local law enforcement officials are no longer alone in their fight, with Obama leading the way by making an arduous trip to Afghanistan to meet with a very unsavory individual. Karzai has recently posed for pictures, arm and arm, with the radical nuclear-aspirant President of Iran, Ahmadinejad. In the meantime, China (you know, the name you see on everything you buy at Wal-Mart) signed a deal with Afghanistan to control some of the world’s largest copper reserves while our troops are being killed in this god-forsaken place. What greater praise can our law enforcement officials receive than the realization that they are working shoulder to shoulder with their President in the war against narco-terrorists? It would be nice to see some of Greenville’s leaders and potentates visibly involved with these efforts. They don’t seem to realize that fighting drugs is the most certain measure that can be taken in behalf of “economic development”. Drug-related problems have a negative impact on the health and safety of the citizens and the economic operation of every element of our community. The hidden cost of drugs is born by hospitals, community services, schools and the industries we fight to keep.

August 22, 2010 Lady Antebellum/Justin Moore Concert Sold Out

14 comments:
GREENVILLE OH – March 25, 2010. The Board of Directors for the Darke County Agricultural Society regrets that attempts to purchase tickets for the Lady Antebellum/Justin Moore concert by either telephone or internet were challenging. We began preparation for the March 20, 2010 ticket sale startup in early February. To process orders as quickly as possible for this event, the following actions were taken: An additional incoming phone line was added to the Fair Box Office; numerous on-line ticket purchase tests were performed; our on-line event was placed on the largest server available and we pre-arranged to have Tech Support on standby, for the start of this event, possessing all Office, pager and personal cellular phone numbers to ensure we could communicate with them quickly if the need arose. Once we were made aware there was an on-line purchasing lag, Tech Support was immediately called and they worked to correct the problem. Again, we sincerely apologize for this situation.

To compound the challenges listed above, the tickets we had placed “on hold” in the Box Office ticket software that were intended for Box Office sales beginning Saturday – March 27, were released and sold during the intense 2-hour sales session on March 20th due to a technical malfunction by the Box Office Ticket software program. This was nothing that was either planned or intentional by any means.

The 4,448 tickets sold on March 20th breakdown as follows:

We will continue our review regarding the challenges incurred during the sale of this event in order to establish modifications that need to be made moving forward.

Fighting the Status Quo with Government Reform (State Rep. Dick Adams)

2 comments:
Do you know how your tax dollars are being spent? According to a recent Gallup Poll, Americans believe that about 50 cents of every tax dollar are wasted. With their paychecks being squandered on a growing government, hardworking families are demanding greater transparency from their elected officials in both Washington and Columbus.

Here in Ohio, more than 120,000 jobs were lost in 2009 alone, but instead of confronting “business as usual” by improving our tax environment and controlling government waste, the Legislature raised income taxes by 4.2 percent retroactive to January 2009, imposed more than 150 new fines, fees and penalties, and increased spending by $1 billion at a time when spending should be reduced.

To save tax dollars and streamline state government, I worked to help develop the “Future of Ohio” Government Reform Package, which aims to make state government work more efficiently by reducing the waste and duplication in the provision of state services.

One of our government reform bills is House Bill 25, which would restructure Ohio’s cabinet-level departments into 11 agencies based on similar core missions. Currently, our state has 24 cabinet-level departments and more than 300 boards and task forces. Compared with only 15 federal government departments, it is clear that we can—and should—restructure our agencies to create a leaner and more effective state government.

When enacted, House Bill 25 would analyze each funding item and ensure that our government is efficient and accountable to the taxpayers, while improving the services that Ohioans need and rely on. I cosponsored this initiative because it has the potential to save the taxpayers more than $1 billion annually by keeping state government cost-effective.

I also cosponsored House Bill 66 to help trim down government waste by creating a venue through which to identify wasteful projects and establish cost-saving measures. This bill would create a state commission similar to Ronald Reagan’s Grace Commission of 1982 to investigate waste and inefficiency. This legislation is especially important in Ohio considering the growth of state government programs and spending.

As “The People’s House,” the Ohio House should permit these and other reform ideas to receive fair consideration in committee. Although House Bills 25 and 66 have stalled in committee, I am hopeful that the House will explore these cost-saving opportunities in the coming months. After all, government accountability and fiscal discipline are concepts that we should all be able to support for the benefit of Ohio’s future.

[Richard Adams is the representative for Ohio's 79th House District, which includes all of Miami County and several townships within Darke County.]

Movie review: How to Train Your Dragon

No comments:
Don’t you hate it when dragons storm your village and steal your sheep?

That happens a lot in Burke, a viking village located on a steep cliff overlooking the ocean. It would be a nice place to live if not for the frequent, terrifying dragon raids. Life for these vikings revolves completely around the ongoing war with the dragons.

Local Reps Vote for Texting-And-Driving ban

1 comment:
State Representatives Dick Adams (79th dist.) and Jim Zehringer (77th dist.) voted today to ban "texting-while-driving." House Bill 415:

  • Prohibits driving a vehicle while using an electronic communications device to write, send, or read a text-based communication.
  • Establishes certain exemptions to the prohibition, including a person using an electronic communications device for emergency purposes and a person driving a public safety vehicle who uses such a device in the course of the person's duties.
  • Provides that for the first six months after the effective date of the bill no ticket, citation, or summons may be issued for a violation of the new prohibition established by the bill, only a warning that provides information about the prohibition. After the warning period, you can be fined up to $150.

Zehringer debated his vote to the very end, noting that texting is now specifically banned while other dangerous activities (such as putting on makeup or doing a crossword puzzle) are not addressed. Zehringer was also concerned about more legislation involving "government telling us what to do," but ultimately was swayed by the safety concerns. The final vote was 86-12.

The ban applies not only to motor vehicles, but also trackless trolleys for some reason. Seriously - check out the bill.

Critical news for NFL fans

1 comment:
Overtime rules change starting next year, in the playoffs only:

If a team wins the coin toss and then kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball. If the game becomes tied again after that next series, play will continue under the current sudden-death rules. Should the team winning the toss immediately score a touchdown, then the game is over.

[info from nfl.com] ... Bonus fact: The NFL owners voted in favor of this change 28-4, with the Bengals among the four.

Historical Board President John Marchal (Photo: Barb Martin)
On Sunday, March 21, Garst Museum hosted one in a series of lectures open to the public. Loretta Jones portrayed Annie Oakley, Darke County’s famous daughter. Ms. Jones talked in detail about the challenges Annie Oakley faced both as a woman in what was then a men’s world and as a simple farm girl from the Midwest. Annie Oakley maintained her dignity and femininity all the while rocketing to fame as an extraordinary performer and sharp-shooter around the world.

The audience was the largest yet for a Garst Museum lecture, estimated at over 150 in attendance. This was the actual opening “shot” of the 150th birthday celebration for Annie Oakley. There is a scheduled year long series of events honoring the Annie Oakley Center at the museum, which includes her guns, trophies, artifacts and photographs which constitute the most extensive display about her life.

The next major event will be on May 22 with the museum’s fund-raiser “Little Sure Shot Gala”. For more information on how to donate or support this event, please call the museum at 548-5250.

Garst Museum welcomes new members. For a view of what the museum has to offer, please visit www.garstmuseum.org.

A Night of Comedy and Caring - March 27th

No comments:
The Darke County Chapter of the American Red Cross is again offering Darke Countians a way to support the lifesaving services that the Red Cross provides the community , “A Night of Comedy and Caring” their premiere special event for 2010. “Who would have thought that we would still be holding this event ten years later” stated Lynne Gump, Executive Director, “but, it’s just such an affordable and enjoyable evening, not to mention, hilarious!” For this the tenth year, the Chapter is honoring the men and woman of the United States Military and their family members! Of note, a Pair of Free tickets to the event are available to the first fifteen military personnel or military family member that requests them; that’s thirty seats being donated to military, veterans and/or a member of a military family.

This year’s event will be held March 27th at the Greenville Elk’s at 214 Third Street with doors opening at 5:30 for a casual hour of drinks and socializing and dinner being served promptly at 6:30. A dinner buffet by Montage Catering will feature Hand Pounded-Pan Fried Chicken Parmesan Chicken, Four Cheese Lasagna, a score of side dishes and an assortment of cheesecake to end the meal. A cash bar is available for responsible drinking; meal comes with Iced Tea and Lemonade. A great meal, of course, is the first step to a wonderful night out, but that’s where this fun raiser just begins. Nationally known comic Mark Klein, who has appeared on A & E’s Comedy on the Road, Showtime and Comedy Club Network, and a host of television shows brings a wealth of comedy to Darke County. He prides himself on being outrageously funny, without going “blue”, meaning he’s a great PG comic. The Darke County Chapter considers themselves very lucky, that they are able to bring in a comic of this highest level for their fundraiser. For years Chapter volunteers have worked with locally comedy clubs to bring a high level of entertainment for this event at a much reduced rate. This year to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the event, Rob Haney, owner of Wiley’s Comedy Club has generously donated tickets to a show at Wiley’s for everyone attending “A Night of Comedy and Caring”! Even better the show is for comic Jeffrey Jena, who has in years past appeared at Darke County’s own Comedy and Caring!

Additionally, the Chapter hosts that evening a raffle for prizes donated by area businesses, and a “Not so Silent, Silent Basket Auction” for baskets that are donated by the Chapter’s Board of Directors. Most of the Baskets are worth two to three hundred dollars and are sold to the highest bidder that night.

Your Red Cross Chapter is an extremely vital part of our community, whether it is by aiding victims of local disaster such as house fires, by providing life-saving training in CPR, or by providing emergency communications for our Armed Forces and their family, the American Red Cross is part of your everyday life. Buying a twenty-five dollar tickets to this casual evening of fun is just one way you can support your Red Cross and help them provide all of the services so essential to our community. “The programs the Red Cross delivers, down the street, across the county and around the world are as vital today as they were ninety-three years ago when this chapter began,” states Gump,” this is an fun, affordable evening for a great cause! “Tickets are available from the chapter office at 130 Martz Street, Suite 6, by calling 548-1002 or by emailing gumpl@darkecounty.redcross.org.

EPA ignores toxic mercury emissions to rampage carbon dioxide

No comments:
Accolades to the Dayton Daily News for publishing Mercury Emissions Up in U.S. on Thursday March 18, 2010!

Coal fired electric power and steel plant emissions release the majority of pollution responsible for health problems ranging from asthma, COPD, and cancer to possible mental disabilities in the case of mercury (Hg). The health care costs stemming from coal emissions runs into billions of dollars while increasing death rates especially in the vulnerable young and elderly. The combustion of coal produces a wide array of toxic by-products in addition to Hg. The only significant non-toxic product is carbon dioxide (CO2). Not only is CO2 innocuous, it is an essential nutrient for plant growth. The increased CO2 is responsible for increased crop production that helps limit the number of hungry and starving people around the world.

Ironically CO2 has been labeled a toxic pollutant based on the work of a few rogue scientists at the University of East Anglia Climate Research Unit (CRU) and the UN’s IPCC who declared CO2 was responsible for what they labeled “anthropogenic global warming” (AGW). When it appeared, the planet was not warming, but indeed cooling over the last several years, the terminology was conveniently changed to “climate change”. Fortunately last year intercepted emails between the cohorts resulted in the unraveling of the AGW hoax. As a result it is currently more accurately referred to as “climate-gate” with admissions, confessions and concessions coming from the primary investigators, the UN IPCC, along with its star propagandist Al Gore. Given these facts, rational leaders in the EPA and the Department Of Energy could be expected to drop the multi-billion (trillion) dollar projects dealing with CO2 emissions and Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) to pursue the truly toxic coal emissions such as mercury. Although the EPA has failed to set emission standards for mercury as mandated by the Clean Air Act of 1990, they are feverishly pursuing CO2 emissions under the direction of Secretary of Energy Chu who continues to support limitations on CO2 and provides funding for CCS. Of all of the components of the “Cap and Trade” bill, CCS is by far the most flawed based on government research in that it increases toxic fossil fuel emissions by 30-40% and presents unknown environmental hazards in its own right at costs that would add to our burgeoning national debt.

In line with Secretary Chu’s leadership, the EPA has attempted to tax cows for their CO2 emissions, driving up the price of milk necessary to feed children and the hungry. In effect, these policies, however inadvertent, are designed to kill us by the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat while simultaneously starving crops by limiting the CO2 and taxing the very milk our children drink. Is our assessment of the situation illusionary and hyperbolic? We believe an open debate is necessary, before Congress takes any further action on “Cap and Trade” which will only transfer more work to China and other countries that provide minimal healthcare and unsafe mining standards. In spite of its Beijing smog, China adds one to two coal fired plants per month that shower our “Cap and Trade” California congressmen with increasing levels of atmospheric mercury. They still don’t get it. Perhaps some people never learn. Unfortunately they are in Congress.

Hope in Recovery: WHAT IS COMPULSIVE HOARDING?

No comments:
Compulsive hoarding is a disorder characterized by difficulty discarding items that appear to most people to have little or no value. This leads to an accumulation of clutter such that living and workspaces cannot be used for their intended purposes. The clutter can result in serious threats to the health and safety of the sufferer and those who live nearby.

Single payer is not the answer (Wayne Deschambeau, CEO/Wayne Health Care)

17 comments:
The healthcare reform bills in Congress are a mess. There are thousands of pages of words, but no real solutions. In addition they include the so-called “Louisiana Purchase” and the “Nebraska Compromise”, coupled with a deal to exempt all union members from a tax on high cost insurance packages make the plans to be, both ineffective and pork laden.

The issues of cost and access have been major drivers in the reform discussion. We are told that somewhere between twenty and fifty million people do not have insurance. Costs escalate at a level that is more than double the inflation rate on an annual basis.

I submit that these are only the results of the real issue. The real issue is the American attitude towards personal healthcare. Many millions more than the fifty million uninsured see healthcare professionals or go to hospitals only when they get sick. Drugs, alcohol, smoking and poor diet choices, go along with an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. We know that a larger part of the American population is obese when compared to other nations throughout the world. Obesity and chronic disease is running rampant throughout our pre-adult population.

The lack of insurance does not prevent access to a hospital or a healthcare professional. Hospitals all across the country are required to care for people with “urgent” or “emergent” conditions. Free and low cost physician clinics exist throughout America. Unfortunately, like many things that are “free”, we either do not use it because it is free or we abuse it when we choose to use it. Fully one third of all American people eligible for Medicaid choose not to get signed up until they have some kind of medical emergency.
