Senate Bill 5 Petition Signing Held in Greenville

A group of local citizens held a drive to gather signatures for a petition that will be submitted in an attempt to get Senate Bill 5 placed on the November ballot to have its eventual fate determined by voters.

Did you sign? What do you think? Is the measure worth at least being determined by the public, rather than elected officials?
Update: The group will be out at the old Marsh/Lo Bills lot again Saturday, April 30th from 12-2 in case you'd like to sign, but missed them tonight.

  1. I elect my representatives to govern, and that is what I expect them to do. I do not second-guess them. Who can say with a straight face that public schools have been improved by collective bargaining?

    Fred:
I would assume that you feel the same way about Obamacare, and trust that your officials have made the right decision?

  4. Innocent raises a good point. However, I see indications that more recently elected representatives are dismantling or neutralizing various aspects of Obamacare. The system has worked for two and a quarter centuries and is correcting some of the error of recent months, which is not to say that it is perfect or that we are not in deep do-do. But the system seems to be working better than that of Libya and a host of other nations.

  5. Innocent Bystander, I am sure he feels the same way about ObamaCare, as the people he elected have recently worked to get rid of it.

    Long-live Senate Bill 5!!!

    Duh, WINNING:
I hope you and others like you can continue to be prideful of those who would destroy the livlihoods of working people at the expense of more tax cuts for the richest. It will only hasten the day of reckoning.

  7. Here's an idea, make the lower 45% in this country pay THEIR fair share, then we can talk about taxing those who actually contribute to society instead of just live off it.

I don't know what "FUD" is; but assuming it is erroneous, biased information, I think it's obvious as to which of us is the greater believer.

  10. to BE,
If you are implying that 45% of people in this country pay no taxes, you are like many others who daily intake a high ration of Fox News and talk radio, sadly misled. Perhaps you prefer that these who "live off it" be eliminated through some form of genocide? See you in church.

  11. Raygo - I've seen recent AP stories reflecting similar statistics for federal income tax.

"There are so many breaks that 45 percent of U.S. households will pay no federal income tax for 2010, according to estimates by the Tax Policy Center, a Washington think tank."

"More than 44 percent came from the top 5 percent."

Perhaps you should research the numbers before passing them off as a Fox News fabrication. I realize this is a bit off topic from the original post on SB 5. However, being in the 55% paying taxes, I find it very irritating that I must pay thousands in federal income tax when almost half pay none. We all benefit (arguably) from federal services, but only about half have to pay for them.

  12. Josh F,
Please read my post again. Yes, 45% pay no federal income tax, and neither would you or I if we were in their same position. This still does not mean they don't pay payroll taxes (to the fed), sales tax (to state and local), real estate tax (local) etc., etc. My point was, Fox and others style the discussion in order to make their listeners believe that 45% of people pay no taxes which is patently false and keeps the hate going.
