Doings at the Gathering

12 comments:
The Gathering at Garst is underway this weekend with outstanding exhibitors. Wonderful skilled historical craftspeople are demonstrating and selling their products for the unique enjoyment of visitors to the Gathering.

Hank Steinmetz is a blacksmith who forms iron into beautiful objects using a mobile forge. Visitors can see how a traveling craftsman would live as he and his family moved about the frontier selling their wares.

Daniel Hrinko, box maker, came to the Gathering from Springfield, Ohio. Daniel crafts perfect wooden boxes that visitors will marvel at.

While you enjoy the exhibits at the Gathering, linger a bit longer and enjoy a summer time meal. There are several barbecue vendors offering full meals to just sandwiches.

Dane can't believe how quickly 10 years have flown by and he encourages everyone in the community to come out to Annie Oakley Days to catch Civic Theater's latest fun filled show.

This years show is titled Dirty Work Afoot or How to Dig Your Fortune In Ten Easy Lessons by Sherry Roseberry and presented with special permission from Eldridge Publishing Company. The story begins with villainous Bernard Blackburn, in debt up to his mustache, plotting with crooked insurance agent, Godfrey Patterson, to marry innocent and beautiful Polly Goodson. After the death of her father, Polly believes she is penniless, but Patterson knows that her father's insurance policy is worth thousands...thousands that Blackburn wants to steal from poor innocent Polly! Blackburn thinks his plan to marry Polly is flawless, that is until he meets her family.

Crazy Grandpa Goodson, a sister obsessed with Amazons, a sling shot toting little brother, and a disapproving maid keep Blackburn on his toes. On top of it all, there's Polly's fine upstanding neighbor, John Trueheart, for whom Polly has a great deal of affection. Blackburn convinces Trueheart to go off in search of his fortune before asking for Polly's hand in marriage. This allows Blackburn to bring in his accomplice, Freeda Pane, who pleads Blackburn's case to Polly.

Join the Civic Theater cast, Sandy Hartley, Alex Stigler, Mark Howell, Megan Neff, Quinton Gray, Larry Holmes, Bill Murphy, Taylor Dorn, Lyn Foureman, Didi Lachat, Elizabeth Penrod, James Maloney, Simon Hoying and Olivia Leeper, as they work their magic on the melodrama stage.

Commissioners Corner - July 2011

No comments:
The rain has shut off, the temperature is in the nineties, and humidity is there as well, so it must be summer here in Darke County. Although it has been hot, this seems to be a typical summer for our area. The crops are looking better after a slow start to planting season, and the sporadic rain showers are helping everything to grow a little bit in this weather. This may be a typical summer for the County, but this has been an untypical year here in the Commissioner’s office. As of this writing, we are still waiting to hear the final numbers from the state on our budget. Hopefully by August we will have a clear indication of what we have to work with. We do know that there is going to be less to work with, so we are making plans to deal with the loss of revenue. The Commissioners have several options, but we cannot implement anything until we know for sure what we are dealing with. We will keep you informed as soon as we know something.

On the economic development front, Darke County continues to move forward. Marc Saluk and Melanie Nealeigh have been very busy with new contacts and with established businesses for the past several months. Because of the change at the state level making a Jobs Ohio Board, things are a little confused right now, but Marc is on top of things. We continue to be a hot spot right now, so the C. I. C. Board, the Economic Development Dept. and the rest of the county are working together to continue our success. In talking to all the members of the C. I. C., all of us agree that the communication and cooperation between the villages, city, and county has never been this good. We all are on the same page, and see this as a win-win situation for the county. We are happy to see that in the last month Continental Carbonic and Integrity Ambulance have made huge commitments to have their businesses in Darke County. We welcome them as part of the Darke County community. We still have other businesses looking to either expand or locate in the county, but as of now, we cannot elaborate on these potential business developments. Hopefully, very soon we will have some news to report. The courthouse parking lot project is moving along nicely, and the public should be able to use the lot sometime in August. It should be noted here that this is a public parking lot, and not for exclusive use of the patrons of the courthouse as has been rumored. Arcon Construction is doing the work and if the weather co-operates they should be able to maintain their time schedule. The work done so far looks very good and we are pleased with the way they are completing the job.

The Commissioners are very pleased with the response we are getting on the radio program, and with the columns in all the media. We have made a commitment to keep the citizens informed as we feel that government works best when the people are involved. It is also nice to see people come to our meetings and watch and ask questions. We meet publicly every Monday and Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in the Commissioner’s Office located at 520 S. Broadway in Greenville, just south of the Courthouse. Everyone is always welcome and we hope to see you here soon.

Guest Opinion from Greenville Resident Bob Rhoades

8 comments:
Last week I attended the Greenville City School board meeting with an idea on how a committee could present the idea of a new school to the general public and how to fund it. It was received very well and I was later advised that we would probably move in that direction.

I didn’t realize that later on the fiasco over the non-renewal of the contracts of two coaches was going to put the community in an upheaval larger than anything I’ve ever seen. Letters to the editors, chat boxes, shout boxes and just people talking on the street has continued now for over a week. Did someone hit a nerve? It would seem so.

The one thing that has really gotten to me is people saying things like, “after that, I’m never voting for anything again for the Greenville City Schools”. Indeed! The wise or unwise decision of the board of education has very little to do with the real problem. WE NEED A NEW SCHOOL BUILDING! It is untimely, at the very least, that this all happened when it did. I felt very good about the chances of getting a funding mechanism in place and construction finally starting on the project. The work load of the facilities committee just doubled. Not only now do we have to explain why we need a new school, we also have to explain why people should vote for it in spite of the board of education we have, not because of the great job they are doing.

If people in high places use their office as a bully pulpit, then shame on them. If they voted with out all of the information, that’s too bad, did you learn a lesson? If the personnel weren’t rehired because of misfeasance, nonfeasance, or malfeasance, so be it. If for any of the five, it was a personal vendetta, then man up, say it was and let’s move on. As in any case with a public officer, elected by the people there are a number of recourses that can be taken. First, make sure at the polls that they never get elected to any office again. You have to wait a while, but it’s the cheapest for the general public. Second, go to the board of elections, get a recall petition, get the number of signatures you need to get it certified and on the ballot, and yank them right out of their chair on that board, the day after election.

The largest thing that anyone can do is become informed on the issues. Don’t say that we aren’t going to vote for school issues because of an ill-advised decision someone made, that won’t fix a thing. Had they done that in 1911, there would be no South School.

The uninformed statements, (I wanted to say stupid statements but it’s not politically correct), that people have made are incredible. “Greenville is just jealous because everyone else got a new school and they didn’t” was the one that got me. Have you been in the buildings that you send your kids to every day? If not voting for something is how you feel, please get all the facts first. Take a piece of paper and put two columns on it and head one with “for a new school reasons” and the other “against a new school reasons”. Fill both columns as best you can and see what you come up with. If there are questions you can’t answer, go find out before you make the decision.

It was said that the coaches in question can re-apply for their jobs... and they would want to for what reason?

We’ll start over and hope nothing else happens. We have an overabundance of lemons at this point, let’s hope we can make some incredible lemonade!

Bob Rhoades

Guest posts are welcome and encouraged. If you have something to say and are able to do it in a respectful, reasonable way, send your piece to darkejournal@gmail.com

OK, Darke Countians, Time to Be a Budget Hero

1 comment:
We've been commenting and chatting about the budget/deficit/debt ceiling crisis for what feels like an eternity. Everyone has different views on what should done, what should be cut (or spent), what taxes should be increased (or lowered), etc.

Now, American Public Media has put together an easy to use game where you can pick different options of cuts and increases, etc and see the affect each action would have on the budget, deficit and debt, not just right now but also projected over the next 25 years or so. The numbers used (unless otherwise noted) all come from the Congressional Budget Office.

Click on the image below for much more information on how to play and let us know how you do (note, one of the first screens asks you for your name and email address, etc, but you are able to leave it all blank and continue on as if you had entered the info, it is NOT required to play).

Second National Bank Continues Support of Local Development

No comments:
DARKE COUNTY- Second National Bank has continued their strong support of Darke County’s Partnering for Progress (P4P) campaign with a 2011 contribution of $10,000 to the county wide economic development effort. The bank’s contribution raised the year three total of the campaign to over $350,000, with more money being committed monthly. It also raised the bank’s commitment thus far to the effort to $30,000.

“We’re proud to be a part of such a valuable campaign,” stated John Swallow, President of Second National Bank. “The Partnering for Progress initiative seeks to encourage growth and revitalization. Obviously, that’s something that we want to support in any way that we can.”

The P4P initiative is a collaborative effort between the county economic development office, the Darke County Community Improvement Corporation (CIC), the county commissioners, and dozens of public and private investors across the county. It aims to promote both the expansion of existing county industry and the attraction of new business. Because of these goals, Economic Development (ED) Director Marc Saluk said that the private investment side of the equation is vital.

“The support of Second National Bank and the other investors gives the economic development office resources that it would never have if it were solely a public program,” explained Saluk. “It provides the tools it will take to attract and retain business and jobs, and provide for a prosperous future. Basically, Second National’s involvement makes my job, and the job of anyone involved in this effort, much easier.”

According to Saluk, P4P has assisted the business community in the creation or retention of over 400 jobs to this date, most of them well paying positions in manufacturing. Additionally, the initiative has worked with Ohio to secure commitments of over $12 million in state incentives for the local business community. The total number of P4P investors now stands at over 60.

Established in 1883 in Darke County, Second National Bank is a community bank with offices in Greenville, Versailles, Arcanum and Ft. Recovery. They have been voted the Best Financial Institution in Darke County the past 6 years and Best Mortgage Company the past 3 years by the Readers Choice Awards conducted by the Advocate. In addition to their full line of deposit, loan and banking services they also offer trust and investment services.

Those interested in learning more about the county’s economic development efforts can call the ED office at 548-3250.

OK, Now We're Paying Attention

5 comments:
As if the national and local economies' struggles weren't enough. As if the tough times being endured by everyone hadn't already taken its toll on the well being and outlook on everyone, now come news that the Dayton area distributor of Budweiser may cut off supply (per theblaze.com).

Workers, including warehouse workers, delivery drivers and others, charge that their parent company is making harsh cuts to benefits and other aspects of their employment in an unfair manner.

Check the link above for the statement from the workers. Then hastily begin your fallback plan in the event a shortage does occur.

Tips for Eating Healthy at the Fair

19 comments:
Upcoming fairs and community festivals highlight heritage, food, music, and agriculture. The look and smell of food at these festivals makes it hard not to overindulge. Here are some smart choices without packing on extra calories.
Don’t go to the fair hungry. Have a healthy snack before you leave the house so you won’t feel starved and tempted by the smell of the cooking food.

  • Make a plan. Take the time to walk around to investigate the different food items available before making a selection
  • Aim for healthier choices. Avoid fried foods. Look for food items that are grilled. Remember that the food is made in front of you, so you can ask the vendor to limit the sugar, salt, or fat added during preparation.
  • Try some ethnic/vegetarian foods. Many ethic dishes are made without meat and are often grilled rather than fried.
  • Think of the 5 food groups. Plain meats, vegetables, or fruit are usually a better choice if they are not fried or swimming in butter or sauce.
  • Watch out for the desserts/sweets. They can add a lot of calories.

There are ways to have fun and eat at the fair or festival without making a big impact on your diet:

  • Share with friends. Buy a regular sized portion of your favorite food and split it among a few people. Everyone gets a small portion without overindulging.
  • Sit down to eat. When you walk and eat, you are often distracted by conversation, other foods, or items on display. So you tend to eat more than you realize.
  • Watch your drinks. It’s important to stay hydrated when you’re outside on a hot day. Water is the best thirst quencher.
  • Take time out to look at non-food vendors, arts and crafts and other activities. Walking around the fair will burn calories and help to make up for not eating the best.
  • Remember that you do not have to give up your favorite fair foods. The key is to prevent yourself from over-indulging. Limit yourself to one or two of your favorite foods to satisfy your craving without ruining your health.

For more tips on eating healthy if you have diabetes, consider attending Diabetic Group Classes at Wayne HealthCare. The next series of four classes will be offered on August 8, 10, 15, and 17, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the conference room at Wayne HealthCare. The low price of $10.00 per class includes handouts and interactive education. Registration is required to attend the classes. Please call 937-547-5750 to register or if you have questions.

The classes help individuals understand the following: 1) diabetes disease process and treatment process, 2) the relationship between diabetes and healthy eating, 3) the value of monitoring your blood sugar and using the results, 4) incorporating physical activity into your lifestyle, 5) how diabetic medications work, 6) ways to reduce your risk of complications, 7) developing strategies for living with diabetes, and 8) developing strategies to promote health/change behavior.

Greenville Police Department Launches “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over”

Intensive Crackdown on Impaired Driving - Police Vow to Arrest Everyone Found Driving Over the Limit

[Greenville, OH] – The Greenville Police Department today announced it will join nearly 10,000 other law enforcement agencies nationwide in support of an intensive crackdown on impaired driving August 19 – September 5, known as “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.”

The problem of impaired driving is a serious one. Data from the Ohio State Highway Patrol shows that the number of OVI-related fatal traffic crashes increased by more than 7% from 2009 to 2010. In 2010 alone, there were 13,032 alcohol-related traffic crashes in Ohio that killed 436 people.

“All too often, innocent, law-abiding people suffer tragic consequences and the loss of loved ones due to this careless disregard for human life. Because we’re committed to ending the carnage, we’re intensifying enforcement during the crackdown. Since twice as many alcohol-impaired accidents occur over the weekend, and four times as many occur at night, we will be especially vigilant during these high-risk times when impaired drivers are most likely to be on our roads,“ said Chief Dennis L. Butts.

Across the country, it is illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 grams per deciliter or higher. According to the latest data, nearly a third of fatalities in motor vehicle traffic crashes involved a driver or motorcycle rider with a BAC above the legal limit – an average of one fatality every 48 minutes.

The crackdown will include law enforcement officers in every state, Washington, D.C., and many U.S. cities and towns.

The Greenville Police Department will be aggressively looking for all impaired drivers during the crackdown and will arrest anyone they find driving while impaired – regardless of age, vehicle type or time of day.

“Our message is simple and unwavering: if we find you driving impaired, we will arrest you. No exceptions,” said Chief Butts. “Even if you beat the odds and manage to walk away from an impaired-driving crash alive, the trauma and financial costs of a crash or an arrest for driving while impaired can still destroy your life.”

According to the Greenville Police Department, violators often face jail time, loss of their driver’s licenses, and vehicle forfeiture. Financial costs may include attorney fees, court costs, lost time at work, and the potential loss of job or job prospects. When family, friends, and co-workers find out, violators can also face tremendous personal embarrassment and humiliation.

“Driving impaired is simply not worth all the consequences. So don’t take the chance. Remember, Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” said Chief Butts.

KARLH MCCALLISTER MEMORIAL GOLF OUTING RAISES MORE THAN $13,000

No comments:
The second annual Karlh McCallister Memorial Golf Tournament raised more than $13,000 for the Bridges to College Program.

“This was again a tremendous tribute to Karlh and a great benefit to Darke County students,” said Beth Sears, executive director of Bridges to College.
Bridges to College helps students go to college through one-on-one mentoring, educational programs and scholarships.

“Students are going to be able to learn more about college options, and we’ll be able to continue to provide students scholarships, thanks to the great outpouring of support from businesses, community members and area golfers,” Sears said.

Ninety-six golfers participated in the golf outing at the Greenville Golf Course on Saturday, June 25. This was an increase from 72 golfers during the inaugural event. “The golfers had a lot of fun playing the course and enjoyed the fantastic prizes that were provided by the golf course or donated by numerous vendors and friends of the McCallister family,” said Mike Barker, who organized the outing. “Again we want to thank all of the businesses, community and family members who supported this special day and event.”

Cincinnati.com: Proposal to Cut Driving Exams at Greenville's BMV Location Being Considered

12 comments:
According to an article at Cincinnati.com, a plan is being considered by the state to close many of its Driver Examination stations, including the one in Greenville. The plan is simply a proposal at this point, but it looks like it's entirely possible that in the future, the nearest BMV location to offer driver's exams to Darke County residents could be in Troy or Eaton. Note that this does not affect the other services offered at Greenville's location. It would continue offering vehicle registrations, titles and license reinstatements, etc.

Guest Post from Charles and Rebecca Reier - "Boehner and Jordan: Be willing to tax the multi-billionaires, Spare the country the pain of a French Revolution"

45 comments:
Over the last decade most Americans have seen their personal wealth and well-being stagnate or collapse. A country that looked for ways to spend its excess wealth is now groveling to maintain solvency. During this period of historically low taxes, multi-billionaires have sprung up like crabgrass in an otherwise burnt summer lawn.

Although the Miami Herald, Arianna Huffington and others have brought attention to this phenomenon, this issue has been squelched by the Tea Party and the right-wing with slogans of “class warfare”. In reality the warfare is against the middle and lower socioeconomic groups. As Warren Buffet has said, since most of his income is from dividends, his tax rate is less than that of the people who clean his office.

We must ask multi-billionaires to pay their fair share toward solving our financial crisis.

The Tea Party that revels in colonial costumes, not unlike the French elite, sends a message to the country that is chillingly similar to Marie Antoinette’s statement “let them eat cake.”

Open Discussion: Debt Ceiling Debate, What Do You Think?

70 comments:
Update (7/23): Speaker of the House John Boehner has cut off talks with the President after not being able to reach an agreement, saying he will focus on working with leaders of the Senate, saying he and the President were "never really close" on a deal.

Original Post: It's all we are hearing about at the national level, the impending deadline to raise the debt ceiling, else be unable to issue new debt and run the very real risk of having the government's credit rating lowered.

So what do you, oh good readers of Darke Journal, think should happen from here?

Lies! Lies, lies, lies! Pure unmitigated, adulterated, bald-faced LIES! And mighty proud of it too! That’s what you’ll hear from Chris Supinger at the Gathering at Garst July 30 and 31, 2011 at Garst Museum.

Describing his performance as “storytelling stretched to its limits,” and “half truths so preposterous, they just might be true,” Chris Supinger is sure to entertain as he “jes drops by” the Gathering at Garst at 11:00 am on Saturday, July 30.

Dressed as a 1770’s traveling long hunter, you can imagine him “jes droppin by” on his travels and talking about news of the area and passing on items of interest about where he’s already been. After these formalities are performed, the swapping of “big windies” will commence. Supinger’s old time tales are a delight to hear for ages two through ninety nine. Anyone other than that either has already heard them or just plain don’t care anymore!

The Gathering at Garst, a Garden of Antiques and Art, will be a quality, juried show that features vendors in the following categories; artists, antique vendors, skilled historical craftsmen, primitive folk- artists, garden exhibitors, farmers market and specialty vendors, and food vendors. Dates are July 30 and 31, 2011 at Garst Museum in Greenville, Ohio. Public admission to The Gathering at Garst is free. Regular admission prices apply to tour the museum. All celebration proceeds will benefit the Garst Museum.

Event hours will be from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 30 and from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 31.

The end of an era at Franklin-Monroe

12 comments:
Demolition of the old Franklin-Monroe High School. The hazard area is fenced off, but alumni were entering anyway to get bricks as mementos. One F-M alum said the Franklin Elementary School was coming down Monday. The roof of the new school can be seen in the background.

A view not seen in decades ... this sidewalk led to the main entrance of the old school.

The front of the new school. Much remains to be completed on the exterior. It may be a challenge to have everything done in time for the coming school year.

The old and the new ... the old gym (in the foreground) will be saved and is attached to the new school with a temporary breezeway. You can get a glimpse of the courtyard under the breezeway roof.

Here is a view of the massive unfinished courtyard, looking west.

State of the Heart Employee Winner in National Poetry Contest

New Madison resident and State of the Heart Hospice employee Laurie Brumbaugh has won an award in the sixth annual Writer’s Digest Poetry Awards Competition for writers. Her poem, “Jam,” has been published in the sixth annual Writer’s Digest Poetry Collection. Brumbaugh is the Marketing Manager for State of the Heart.

“It is an incredible feeling to be selected,” Brumbaugh said. “Writer’s Digest is a well-respected publication. After reading the other winning entries, I can tell you this is a high quality collection. Many of the other winners have been successful poets for years, so I feel truly honored that my work is among them.” Writer’s Digest refers to the winning poems as the “50 winning entries.” For her winning entry, she received a free copy of “Poet’s Market 2011” and $50 worth of books from Writer’s Digest. The collection of poems will be available for purchase at www.writersdigest.com/shop.

Brumbaugh, who graduated from Bowling Green State University with a B.A. in English with a creative writing minor, said, “Since I was 12 years old I have enjoyed writing poetry. I studied poetry in college and really developed my unique voice there. One of my life’s goals is to become a successful, published author. I would like to publish at least one poetry collection as well as novels.”

Of her winning poem, she said, “The inspiration for ‘Jam’ came from a frustrating experience I had last summer trying to harvest overgrown, overripe strawberries. It made me miss my late mother-in-law a great deal. It was one of those moments that hits you out of nowhere and makes you feel the loss of that person in your life. I have always turned to writing as a way of expressing grief, though it doesn’t always turn into a polished piece like this.” She added, “Inspiration can come from anywhere. I am often inspired by nature and I write a great deal from my own experiences. I also get inspired by literature and historical events.” The entry was her first in the contest.

Brumbaugh has been an employee of State of the Heart for a year. The local non-profit agency, with offices in Greenville, Coldwater and Portland, cares for patients in eastern Indiana and western Ohio who are confronting a life limiting illness. Versailles Firefighters To Climb for 343 Brothers

No comments:

On September 11, 2001, 343 New York City firefighters were killed in the attacks on the World Trade Center. In order to remember these men, numerous cities around the country will be holding memorial stair climbs in which fellow firefighters come together to climb 110 flights of stairs in honor of their fallen brothers. As an attempt to simulate the climb to the top of the World Trade Center, many of the firefighters will don full firefighting gear and self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), similar to what these 343 men did the morning of 9/11/2001. Each climb is limited to 343 participants, with each participant wearing a badge and biography of one of the men killed at ground zero that they will be climbing in honor of during the climb.

On September 11, 2011, two Versailles firefighters, Brian Pearson and Scott Garrison, will be traveling to Pittsburgh, PA to participate in one of these memorial stair climbs. Although the physical requirements of the climb are demanding, the idea of raising funds for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) is a motivator for Brian and Scott. Both men have been training daily since early June in an attempt to meet their goal of completing all 110 flights of stairs in full gear and SCBA (approximately an extra 50 lbs).

The fee to participate in the climb benefits the NFFF, which supports the families of firefighters killed in the line of duty. In the past three years, 295 firefighters have been killed in the line of duty in the United States. Services provided by NFFF include grief counseling, life counseling, scholarships, and financial assistance in rebuilding their lives after the loss of a loved one. For more details on the NFFF and the benefits provided, please visit www.firehero.org.

Brian and Scott are asking for donations from the community that they will deliver to the NFFF on the morning of the stair climb. If you would like to donate to this worthwhile cause, please make your check payable to “National Fallen Firefighters Foundation” and mail the check to 28 E. Ward St., Versailles, OH 45380, by September 7, 2011. The NFFF is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization and all contributions are tax deductible. If you have any questions regarding the memorial stair climb or fund-raising efforts, feel free to contact Brian at 423-4164, or Scott at 371-1249.
