Two Dead as Car Strikes Motorist and a Passerby Who Had Stopped to Help

Greenville – On February 8, 2015 at 9:37 p.m. Darke County Sheriff Deputies, along with Union City, Ohio Fire and Rescue, were dispatched to SR571 west of Kniseley Rd. reference to a single vehicle rollover accident.  While units were in route dispatch was advised that a second vehicle had just struck a passer by who had stopped to render aid.

Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2003 Kia, driven by Richard L. Stephenson (49) of Union City, OH was westbound on SR571 when it appears he got off the right side of the road and lost control of his vehicle, striking several trees, which caused Stephenson’s vehicle to rollover and come to final rest on its top, partially on the roadway.  Multiple people passing by stopped to give assistance to Stephenson.  While subjects were assisting Stephenson from his vehicle a second vehicle, a 1996 Jeep, driven by Chad Bradburn (50) of Union City, IN, approached the accident scene. Bradburn was unable to get stopped and struck a female by-stander, Linda Shafer (47) of Greenville and Stephenson as he was exiting his vehicle.  Both Shafer and Stephenson were pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol is being looked as a possible contributing factor in the accident.

The Darke County Sheriff’s Office accident re-construction team was called to the scene.  This accident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office and the Darke County Coroner’s Office.  Once this investigation is completed this report will be given to the Darke County Prosecutor’s Office for review of charges.
