Summer Fun and Safety with Diabetes

Summer is a time when we take advantage of the long hours of daylight and enjoy during many activities outdoors. Summer is also a time for family vacations and barbeques.

Summer is a great time to provide your family with fresh fruits and vegetables. Most fruits and vegetables are low in fat. They are high in fiber, especially when they are eaten raw or with the skin on. Fiber will help to keep your digestive system healthy. It also helps to lower your cholesterol level, blood sugar, and reduces your risk for some types of cancer. There is a large variety of produce available at grocery stores and famers markets. There are so many fruits and vegetables available during the summer months that a lot of individuals have never tried, so try a new one today.

Summer is a time to get out and enjoy the weather. As we work in our garden, take walks, go for bike rides, or play sports, we are able to burn calories while enjoying the weather. So enjoy those summertime activities while remaining healthy.

If you have diabetes, summer may also impact blood glucose depending on what you eat, your activity and even the weather. Join Karen Droesch RD, LD, CDE the Diabetic Educator at Wayne HealthCare who will provide a presentation on “Summer Fun and Safety”, during the Free Monthly Diabetes Wellness Program. We will discuss healthy eating with our summertime favorites, traveling with diabetes, weathers impact on blood sugar, and protecting our feet.

The presentation will be held on May 10, 2016 at 2pm in the 3rd floor conference room, at Wayne HealthCare. The program is FREE to attend. If you have questions about the program please call 937-547-5750.
