Edison State Health Science Students Seeing Success After Graduation

Graduates of Edison State Community College are doing exceedingly well when faced with career-focused testing following successful program completion. Students graduating from the nursing, medical laboratory technician (MLT), and phlebotomy programs have seen high pass rates and proved successful in securing employment.

The fall 2016 nursing class reported a 96-percent pass rate on the National Council Licensing Examination (NCLEX), placing the program above both the state and national average of first-time pass rates for the year.

Developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), the NCLEX is utilized by states and other jurisdictions to determine licensure as a registered nurse, to ensure public protection, and to measure the competencies needed to perform safely and effectively as a newly licensed, entry-level nurse.

Students of Edison State’s nursing program are gaining valuable experience in both the classroom and in clinical experience.

“We have great community partners that work with us to provide excellent clinical experiences so that students receive not only a great education but also a competitive skill base when seeking employment,” said Jill Bobb, Program Administrator of Nursing.

Graduates of the MLT program are also excelling, with the fall 2016 class earning a 100-percent pass rate on their board of certification test, placing them above the national average.

On top of high pass rates, the class has also secured 100-percent employment.

“Our students work very hard on their courses and in their internships,” said Vickie Kirk, Medical Technology Assistant Professor of Allied Health. “We have amazing community partners that help make our students as successful as they are in both our medical laboratory technician and phlebotomy programs.”



Accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS), Edison State’s MLT career program prepares graduates to properly perform diagnostic testing to help physicians accurately diagnose and treat patients.

Graduates of the phlebotomy program also received 100-percent pass rate from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). The short-term certificate program prepares students to enter the healthcare field immediately upon graduating.

“We have excellent laboratory facilities for our students to learn how to perform blood collections and manual laboratory testing,” added Kirk. “We have these facilities thanks to the support of Edison State and, again, from generous donations from our local hospitals.”

“We celebrate the success of our health science students in passing their licensure exams and securing employment,” said Chris Spradlin, Provost for Edison State Community College.

“These results are a testament not only to the ability and hard work of our students but also to the efforts of our faculty and staff who strive every day to provide an educational experience for our students that is marked by excellence. It is gratifying to see the confirmation of those efforts.”
