New discussion: Santa-gate in Arcanum

There is apparently a significant disagreement in Arcanum over this year's placement of the Santa House - typically in Sutton's Troutwine's parking lot, but maybe not this year.

Leave a comment with your opinion - or tell us what you know.

  1. Typical it was in Trotwines parking lot, not Suttons. I'm not sure who had the bright idea to move it last year.

  2. the mayor had the bright idea. he's not well liked.

  3. Yipeee!!!!
Everyone gets to laugh at Arcanum AGAIN!

  4. Council took a vote of no confidence tonight. Asked the Mayor to resign. Mayor has 2 weeks to think about it.

  5. The Mayor was asked to resign by 5 of 6 council members. I don't know any of the other details.

  6. It's been in Troutwines parking lot for as long as I can remember. Last year it was moved to the parking lot beside Ben Franklin. You can't see the Christmas tree and frankly, I forgot all about it being there. It was harmless at Troutwines. Why move it? Rumor has it that it is supposedly for safety reasons, but nobody has ever been hurt, so I don't buy that.

A lot of people don't like the new mayor, but frankly, this decision aside, anyone who won that election would be having a tough time of it. The old mayor ran the town (and it's funds) into the ground. He made all around bad choices and now we all get to pay for it.

  7. Is he not liked because he doen't fit Arcanum's good ole boy image and that he doesn't allow the people with the name or money in Arcanum to influence is decisions. Or is it the he just isn't doing a very good job. If moving the Santa house last year was his idea, then that wasn't a verey good idea there.

  8. Who voted for the guy with a pony tail?

  9. The voters of Arcanum.

  10. Mayor was not asked to resign just over the Santa display. There were issues regarding misspending funds, cell phones, getting rid of (or keeping) an old police cruiser and trying to hire a person and fire one who he was not supervisor over. Also managing employees by threats.

    ReplyDelete
  11. There are 2 years of mysterious meanderings at city hall behind Council's vote of no confidence in the mayor. He is arrogant and unresponsive to the best advice and common sense from people with more experience than he has. The Christmas tree issue is just the tip of the iceberg.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I did not vote for him but there wasn't much of a choice in who ran against him. And regards to the santa house...leave it at Troutwines! They are a staple in this community. I was not bored or raised in Arcanum but I have lived here for almost 9 years and the town, the people and the school is wonderful.

  13. I wonder if Monte Clark wishes he had campaigned a little for the election. I feel, if he had, he would have been a sure winner for mayor.

  15. to anonymous at 8:51am - funny how no one EVER mentioned the misspendings of the former mayor. He is the reason the town is in the shape it is today, I do not claim to know the day to day operations of the town, but put blame where blame is due.

  19. Oct 27th 10:38 pm Laugh at Arcanum agian. WHAT!! People are laughing at Arcanum because they moved the Santa House... Give me a break!!! This is all stupid. I lived in Arcanum for many years. Why is moving the Santa House causing this much turmoil in the town? Who cares where it is at as long as the kids have a SAFE place to go to see SANTA... be at Troutwine's or the Parking lot. A comment earlier about safety "Well no one has got hurt at Troutwine's yet.". YET!! To me having the Santa House in the street on ALT. STATE HIGHWAY which is kind of busy, I feel that is kind of unsafe... moving it somehere else makes since.

The poeple of Arcanum voted the new mayor in because THEY WANTED CHANGE. They were tired of all of he old crap that went on in town "GOOD OL' Boys" as you would call it. You can not make change and "not do" the good ol' boy stuff if you do not ruffle a few feathers which the new mayor has.

People of Arcanum, Look at your town. You see a lot of streets being repaired and lot of work being done. which has not been done in a long time. YOUR MAYOR IS DOING WHAT YOU WANTED.

In closing I remember as a child growing up in Arcanum, the Christmas Tree used to be in the middle of the street on North High and George
When the village moved the christmas tree to troutwine's parking lot the town people back then was upset, but eventually got over it....
I assume this will pass as well...

  20. has anyone ever asked if the town insurance stipulates that the christmes tree be off the main route instead of blaming the mayor

  22. Greenville has our santa house on the street in front of the courthouse , on Broadway which is "the" state route 49 and "the" state route 571. Not an "alternate" route 49. Obviously Greenville is endangering our children. We want Arcanums mayor to come make our city safe. Didn't he change beggers night to 6-8, in the dark? That is safe too.

    ReplyDelete
  23. OK, So a politician comes around who runs on the platform of change.... Then what you get is a liberal megalomanic that institues changes that noone likes.... I'm sorry..is this the Obama blog?... My Bad.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1:42....It's unnatural to trick or treat in broad day light. A lot of people were ticked that he changed it to nighttime, but I wasn't one of them. It was a blast and the kids loved it. Nothing horrible happened.

Just read the article about the counsel asking him to resign. WTF? One reason they gave was that he didn't listen to the counsels opinion. Frankly, I wouldn't either. Most of them held that position with our previous mayor and frankly, that's when the town started to fall apart. I think they should fire the counsel and just start over with that, too. We'd be better off.

And what in the hell does Obama have to do with any of this? People just love to throw his name in whenever they can just to dog him. He's the President. That isn't going to change. Get over it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It'll change in 2012!

By the way, we'll quit dogging Obama when he quits blaming Bush for everything that's wrong. If he didn't want to mop up after Bush, he shouldn't have run in the first place.

Katrina, you should tell that president of yours to start doing a little more fixing and a little less blaming ... :)

    ReplyDelete
  26. The way I look at it Katrina is Arcanum Voted them in Arcanum can vote them out. I enough people are in agreeance then have a recall election on all council members and get them all out.... Some of the council member were voted in with the current mayor on the same pretence as his... They started the movement "change for Arcanum" or something like that I do not remember what they called themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I agree with Katrina regarding the changing of trick or treat. I think that it is great that we do trick or treat on halloween now and in the evening. I know all the kids, including my own, have a blast. Sundays from 2-4 is LAME... and as far as that being a safety issue, last I checked, most of the parents in Arcanum walk WITH their children.

I don't know the mayor, I just know that he seemed like a nice guy in the beginning and then he seemed like a jerk. who knows but him and the council.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Tom, Chuckle, chuckl. Last night meeting was just the same as it was when the concerned busy-bodies attended the council.
The council have done dome of the same things which they conplained fo the previous council of doing, even with three of the so called concerned busy-bodies on the council.
I always thought the mayor worked for the council and the council worked with the mayor.
Who voted for him? I DIDN'T

  29. I think it was concerned citizans of Arcanum

  30. DJ, you have every right to dog the president if you wish to do so. However, it's ridiculous to even bring him up in a thread about Arcanum Village Counsel. Obama has nothing to do with it. It's a local matter, not a national matter. My point was...people just like to get their digs in, regardless of the topic at hand. Can't we leave him out of ANY conversation?

    ReplyDelete
  31. I didn't bring up Obama! Anonymous 2:04 brought him up, you responded, and I piled on (admittedly off-topic).

People have accused me of stirring the pot with anonymous comments. This is not true - my comments are under Darke Journal.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Who cares, stir the pot! It's a lot more entertaining when someone writes comments that stir the pot!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Haha. There are plenty of pot stirrers out there already without me chipping in.

  34. Allowing Santa to remain in the grocer's parking lot could be seen as the village endorsing shopping at said grocer. Further, I can see where some might say it is dangerous when cars are certainly trying to fight over parking spaces in a lot where kids are lining up to see Santa.

I'll admit I know nothing about the situation, nor do I care a great deal. Just my observations without having a side to take or any sort of bias one way or another.

    ReplyDelete
  35. The wonderful thing about blogs is that even the completely uninformed can draw hasty conclusions and believe they are correct without being able to support with facts. This was just the "tip of the iceberg" and the "straw that broke the camel's back."

    ReplyDelete
  36. Gosh - I wish that everyone was as perfect as me :)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Nothing has changed in Arcanum, it has always been in the past, it is currently and will be in the future, if you don't have an established name and go along with the good ole boy club then you are considered an outsider.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I don't believe that the council has the right to ask the mayor to resign. It is up to the people of Arcanum. Have a recall election like Oct 28th 3:42 pm said. The people voted him in and the poeple should vote him out.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 5:47 pm, It's not in the grocery store parking lot. The car dealership uses a corner of it's lot to erect the tree and Santa's house. It's downtown and it's on a corner with a traffic light. So, it doesn't benefit one particular business and there are no cars fighting for parking spaces. :)

11:40 pm, isn't that the truth! I married into the town, have been here for 10 years and sometimes I feel as if I still don't quite fit in.

  44. I was born and raised in Arcanum, graduated from Arcanum High School. I have since left and live in another town.

I have been keeping up with all of this with the mayor and I have to say that the town cannot blame anybody else but themselves. As a person who now lives on the outside of town I can now clearly see the problems of the town.

The town streets all torn up, and you have high water bills. You blame it on the past and present mayor and council. Sorry guys, blame it on your self.

It is not the good ole boy club. It is the typical Arcanum attitude. In the 80’s the town had every opportunity to have a factory move into town. The people did not want low life, low income in the town. That was the thought of the people if a factory came into town. So the factory went to another community.

Look at Versailles; the town flourishes because of the tax income they receive from Midmark. That could have been Arcanum. But now Arcanum is struggling trying to come up with the money to keep the streets in repair.

Here just a few years ago, a dollar store wanted to move in. Oh no the town people threw a fit. Not a whole lot of income but still a business. This does not make a whole lot of sense.

Your old fashion days are a joke. Every year the crowds get smaller and smaller, the Mayor wanted a beer tent this year to bring people to the festival, and spend their money. What Beer in Arcanum Oh My God you thought that the world had stopped. Versailles makes a whole lot of money at their festival. “Beer tent”

I do not know this mayor personally. However it seems to me that he at least is trying to do something to help the town. You can’t do much when you have no money. Maybe he comes across a little rough to people but sometimes you need to be a little rough to get a job done.

At one time I know at one time they’re where at least 90 homes for sale in the town. Why would anyone buy there when most outsiders feel unwelcome? Katrina said that herself. Living there for 10 years and still feels like an outsider. My spouse felt the same way when we lived in Arcanum.

The people of Arcanum need to realize that “YOU” are choking the town to death by being this way

It just seems to me that the mayor has stepped on a few toes and ruffled a few feathers and the town people don't like it. Typical Arcanum Attitude.

I feel that I can say these things because I am from the town. I bleed Orange and Black and I will have a tear when the school gets torn down in a few years. Guys open YOUR EYES and see what you have done. Don’t blame past mayor or the present one.
    Blame yourselves.

  46. 10:34, you could not be more right. The factory in New Madison was originally planned for Arcanum, as well. We were all for it and all for the Family Dollar, but majority rules. Everyone thought it would hurt Ben Franklins business. They are also too worried about bringing in the 'riff-raff' with the factory. The whole attitude just pisses me off. I want to move but frankly, we can't afford to sell our house. :(

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's nice to know that just because someone moves out of Arcanum they don't lose their "Arcanum Attitude".

Way to generalize a group of people together...

  50. 10:34:

    Agreed, BINGO!!!

I am the same way, I graduated from there and grew up there my whole life. I will say that they have one of the best schools in the state, but attitudes of most people from Arcanum are a joke.

I believe the town a safe community for the most part, but people love to put the blame on others and are generally unhappy for the most part....

I bleed orange and black, and very unhappy about how childish a lot of the public still act... Still acting like it all about their groups of friends and look down on others. I moved away and did well for myself, and a few others who still live off their parents and wrapped in a substance world, still act as if they are cool----to them: grow up.

To everyone else who is blaming your leaders of the community, VOTE.

Not to mention, take your head out of your shell and see what your community and neighbors have to offer.

    Be a true American.

ARCANUM IS WHERE I WANTED TO COME BACK TO AND RAISE MY FAMILY BUT ALL MY LIFE I FELT LIKE I DIDN'T BELONG THERE, ARCANUM PPL HAVE REAL BAD ATTITUDES, AND WHEN SOMETHING DOESN'T GO YOUR WAY YOU ALL CRY ABOUT IT AND NOW LOOK WHERE YOU'RE AT! SHUT UP OPEN YOUR HEART AND COMMUNITY AND GET ALONG, WELCOME PPL TO YOUR TOWN NO MATTER WHAT...AND WHY ALL THE NEW HOMES WHATS WRONG WITH THE OLD HOMES THAT ARE JUST SO VERY BEAUTIFUL....JUST GOES TO SHOW YOU THAT YOU STUCK UP ARCANUM PPL AREN'T HAPPY WITH WHAT YOU HAVE....GREEDY GREEDY PPL

  55. Oh my, Why don't we all ask Santa where he would like to HO-HO-HO and then place the house where he wants it, and don't tell the little children that you have all been arguing about where to place it!
(it may ruin the image of Christmas for them)

  56. Ho HO HO....Santa is not coming to Arcanum anyway, and he not buying your house either!

  57. My husband and I moved to the Arcanum area almost 10 years ago. We have not had any problems in this community. It is a nice town with nice people, not perfect, nor is any small town. I'm sure residents of the other local communities could be having the same discussion about the old time names, money, etc. As I see it, the town has few entrepeneurs and strong leaders who are willing to run for public office. Therefore we don't have 1st rate choices.

    ReplyDelete
  58. For all you complaining about my town. MOVE! If you are an outsider, then you are an outsider. Get over it. I feel that Arcanum is an awesome place to raise my family, sure beats raising an family in the trash hole greenville. A small town has to be closed or you will get an overflowing amount of trash like greenville has. I would rather live next to a stuck up prick, then some piece of trash that I always have to keep an eye on so they don't steal everything from me.

    ReplyDelete
  59. well i used to live in arcanum too and was also raised there since third grade, but i live in greenville now and let me tell you there is theft everywhere even in arcanum. While i lived in arcanum the past five years my tires where slashed and numerous things were vandilized, so arcanum is not the inocent little town you think it is and how well do you know that snotty neighbor. And if you think greenville is so bad then i suggest you go elsewhere to shop or eat out because our (greenville) trash might get you if you come in town oh im sorry arcanum only has banks and pizza to choose from maybe if the town would allow more business to come in then you wouldn't have to ever come to our trashy town

    ReplyDelete
  60. It is very true, Arcanum residents are very nasty and if you weren't born here you don't count and are definitely made to feel unwelcome. I've lived here many years (over 35) and I have never felt like I belonged. It's also true that Arcanum does not want any new businesses here so we have nothing. The streets are a total disaster and the town looks dumpy, notice the flags flying on some of the poles around town: they are dirty and faded.

    ReplyDelete
  61. i remember when i wanted to move back to arcanum about 16 years ago when my children where young and my husband said i do not want to live and i quote in ( rudy poo ville ) i know that sounds funny but its true. But i got my way and we came back, but i wish we never would have. The house will not sell our water bill is insane and your right the streets are terrible and thats thanks to our council and i mean the past or present council. Its sad that the people of arcanum including me have let people like this run a town for so long. So the people of arcanum either shit or get off the pot. Lets take over and make this a town its supposed to be. I do not have a popular name but i used to be proud of this town, and want to be proud again!!!!!

As far as our council is concerned I HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN THEM. Wine, wine, cry, cry at least the Mayor has been getting things done. Have any of you ever been to a council meeting, you should really go, 2nd Tuesday of the month. It’s like a regular circus, only one ring though. Arcanum the secret place, secretly we won’t allow anyone with different opinions in. Life time resident.
