GPD vehicle involved in auto accident?

An apparent auto accident occurred around 5pm this afternoon on Martin Street in Greenville (near the WTGR building). On the scene were three Greenville P.D. patrol cars and one badly damaged civilian vehicle. A commenter on the chat is indicating that one of the GPD vehicles was involved in the accident.

The involvement of the GPD vehicle remains unconfirmed (and therefore the question mark in the headline). More details as they become available.

Oops: the accident did involve a GPD vehicle and occurred at 2:30 p.m. (apparently still processing the scene after 5 p.m.). WHIO was on it hours ago. The OSP is investigating.

  4. 7:08 - Are you claiming that the officer had his lights on but not his siren? And that this is normal practice for the GPD? (It may be more helpful next time to write your response in a complete sentence so it can be understood.) If that is what you're claiming, were you there? And if you think that's the normal practice for all GPD officers on all calls, maybe you need to pay more attention to what's going on around you.

  5. Just asking a question Echo, please note the multiple question marks. No need to get so defensive. I personally have seen GPD officers, many times over the years, fly up behind me on the street with lights and no siren. So I was just curious as to if this was the case this time.

I, believe it or not, respect and appreciate the GPD and DCSO. I understand why it takes so long to work on a case and get results. However, I do need to question how they respond with lights and no siren some of the time. The EMS and Fire people use both every time, why doesn’t law enforcement? As you obviously seem to be in law enforcement maybe you could explain to me why they respond like this and clear up my obvious ignorance.

  6. Is everyone here without fault? Have you never been an "ACCIDENT"? That is what it is and no matter how safe of a driver you are these things happen. It seems like everyone is looking for a reason lately to voice complaints against the GPD and the DCSO. Bad things do happen to good people guys including the police dept.

  7. Maybe he was responding to save you and someone pulled out in front of him and he tried to avoid an accident but accidently caused another. Or maybe he was following someone who would not pull over to the right so he could pass and the accident was caused. When you call for help you want it there right now. I'm sure police officers try to respond as quickly and safely as possible, but sometimes the general public does not cooperate and clear the road to make way. Just a thought...

  8. There are several instances in which officers should use their lights but not their sirens. For instance, when there is an alarm at a bank, it would be pretty silly to advertise to the bank robbers that you are coming by making a really loud noise that they can hear blocks away. Just a thought.
