  1. I think it is time for Greenville the past behind it and move forward and help the kids get a much needed school.

  2. Did we just pass a school levy back in november and it will go in affect in febuary . that was to maintain the schools we have. what happens to that tax . the new school bond would cost more taxes on a county that has no new jobs. I have heard we need a new school for new jobs but i look around at ansonia, bradford union city and see no new jobs or big companys opened up in there towns

  4. Now is not the time. The school has not proven it can be responsible with what it currently has.

  7. Ansonia and Bradford do not have the business base that Greenville already has, therefore, a new school - especailly grades 5-8 would be a drawing point for younger families coming to the area.
The school is very responsible to what it already has. The current school board and the current superintendent are not responsible for the past wackiness of others. There is an opportunity to get a badly needed new building NOW. It should be seized with vigor.
I believe (but I'm not sure) that any current operating taxes would stay in place for the existing buildings and any new buildings that would come in the future. It is not money lost. Do you have any idea how much money it takes to maintain a school building? It's ain't cheap, bubba!

The bottom line is this... a new building is no guarentee that jobs, etc. would come to town. But i'ts not just that. Greenville Schools have really not asked for much in the past 30 years. This might have some negatives (all levies do), but the positives just outweigh those negatives (at least in my book), and I'm willing to vote YES and get that new building.....even though my own children are grown, and will not benefit from it at all!
Do I always agree with the school administration? No. Do I like all of the teachers employed by the school right now? No. But I'm not letting personal feelings get in the way of what I view as one of the most positive things Greenville, as a community, could get.
    Just my .02 cents.....

  8. So - you lose your job and decide that you have to take away opportunity for others to succeed? It's called picking yourself up, swallowing your pride, and attenpt to make things better for those who come after you.
By the way...I lost my job 9 months ago. I'm getting by, and I will be voting yes.

  9. To everyone who says "now is not the time", would you care to tell us when the time is?

Is the time when even more businesses close in Greenville? Is it when the economy is booming, and so are construction costs, materials, and interest rates? Is it the time when the OSFC is out of money and Greenville has to pay 100% of the bill? Is it after how many more classes of students pass through the old buildings?

Stop being so nearsighted. The present situation isn't going to last, and numerous signs already indicate progress. This is a 37 year levy, there will be at least one period of time during those years that the economy is down.

If Greenville doesn't step up to the plate and stop blaming everyone else and pointing fingers the decline will only continue. Greenville is dying, and if you aren't part of the solution then you are part of the problem.

  10. Josh F. - You get it. You understand it. You should be running for school board or county commissioner. Good man!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Yes, indeed, Josh F. DOES get it. I hope there is a clear majority in February who think like he does and who all get out and vote YES.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Greenville may be dying but it has nothing to do with the school system, a new school will not help our leaderless city.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The school levy will pass because those who don't want to pay for it won't bother getting up to vote "no." There could be an issue on the ballot to name Susie Riegle as the Exhaulted Ruler of Greenville, Ohio and it would probably pass because those who opposed it wouldn't even remember it was election day to go vote against it. It is the only issue on the ballot and isn't a traditional election. I said for years that Greenville could only pass a levy if it was snowing heavily or a special election, as people would not bother to head out in either case. What happens? A special election gets the job done. It will do it again, regardless of what the majority truly feels.

  14. Josh F doesnt have a clue and you people think he should run for goverment office.Thinking like that is why were in the situation were in now.Yes greenville does need a new school but I think there is another way there has to be.They just havent dug far enough to find it.The school board that is in now didnt cause this problem but they havnt helped it either.Think about it they sold two buildings for less than the appraisel of one. That tells me that I dont trust there math.why was north school sold any way isnt that a fairly new building? The point is the problems have been mounting since I was in school and Im 42.That tells me there have been a lot of differant people that have served on the school board but they followed the people before them,s lead.Yes we need a new school but I think we need new leadership on the board and Im not talking about ms. reigle.Im talking about the whole school board and city council.Im not saying there all bad but something is a miss or this wouldnt be as big of an issue now.It would have been fixed years ago.

  15. It is a shame that the school leadership of all the schools in Darke county didn't get their heads together and decide how to get the children of our county educated the best and most economically possible. I don't know what the purpose of the State and county school board is but it seems they could help make recommendations on how to cut expences since education is what they are all about.
Our neighbors in Randolph county in Indiana seen the problems when the finances got tight there. They formed consolidated school districts therefore cutting down on the amount of buildings, administrators and staff thereby saving millions of dollars that would have been wasted.
We could have had Darke Northern comprising of Mississinawa, Ansonia and Versailles districts. Greenville Central being Greenville and Bradford and Darke Southern being made up of Tri-Village, Arcanum and Franklyn Monroe districts. Yes this would eliminate the alumni associations but do the alumni personel contribute to help with the financial burdens these school have.

  16. is that why they paid big bucks (just how much does a special election cost the school). to sneek in this election. to get all the yes people to go vote. we the no vote need to remind all the no voters to go vote on febuary 2 2010 that is are right to vote

  17. Federal and government employees are being laid off in large numbers from what should be considered secure positions. The unemployment rate has zoomed over ten percent and in places like California – over 12 percent. Many of those that appear to be employed are underemployed at jobs paying less than half of what they received a few years ago. Many skilled construction workers have been reduced to odd jobs. Large numbers of manufacturing workers will never see their jobs return because their industries have been transferred to China as a result of unfair trade practices. Looking forward, the economy shows no prospects of brightening according to Nobel Laureate economists.
In the midst of this employment mayhem that faces virtually all American families, the educators propose that we take on more taxes even though the Obama administration has made it clear that we will all pay more taxes going forward.
In spite of the foregoing considerations we support NOW IS THE TIME but only if the teachers and administrators agree to a five to ten percent cut in salary until economic prospects improve. This token gesture I believe would make the NOW campaign successful. Otherwise we must give heavy considerations to the issues that confront us. For the first time in human history, children locally and around the world are receiving an Ivy League quality education through the Internet. The necessity of local libraries, expensive textbooks and labor intensive classroom education, all of which were necessary in the twentieth century, are no longer critical to achieve a world class education. The drudgery of delivering the same lecture from the same set of notes and hand grading each and every paper is no longer an essential component of the educational system. What is essential though, and should never be lost, is the role of teachers as mentors, facilitators, counselors and role-models.

    ReplyDelete
  18. North School needed so much repair that it would have cost the school system more than the building was worth. Gettysburg, although a fine place, was not cost effective because in order to keep enough students there, they were busing kids from pretty far out. It might not be perfect, but the consolidation of Woodland/East/South was the best alternative at the time.
DukeBlackOhio - if you're so young and smart....THEN RUN FOR SCHOOL BOARD YOURSELF. I might even vote for you!
Yes, Indiana school consolidations have been much more effective. But, the fact is...we're not in Indiana. We're in Ohio and we are stuck with what the people in Columbus deal to us. I've been all for "Darke County Schools" for a long time, Bob. However, it's just a moot point.
I really don't care what the economy is - if the schools have a chance to get something like this with the help of the state. Then do it.

  19. I just wish that all of you who won't sign your name and think that you have all the answers would sign your name so that we can know who you are and get you signed up to run for office.

To the one who is unemployed, so am I. I am an electrical engineer and have been unable to find full time work. So I have been working part time at Radio Shack and spent about 40 hours of my time (did not get paid to do this, and paid for my backround check) to learn to be a substitute bus driver for Greenville City Schools. I am at least trying to do something constructive with my life besides sitting back and complaining about everything but yet do nothing to change it.

In the end Greenville needs a new middle school.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Why does Greenville need a new middle school Jeff? What Greenville needs is new employment. Industry jobs that pay a decent wage. Don't give me the same old line, that a new school building will bring in new jobs. So far people keep saying this, but can not produce proof of this. I keep saying that a company or corparation will look beyond the school building. Where does Greenville schools rank in the county? Also Jeff, people are entitled to their opinions. That doesn't mean they should run for office. On the same hand, you have your opinion. Should the other side say you should run for office. Maybe Greenville does need a new school building, but to think it will bring in new jobs or improve the school system is foolish at best. It will give the children a nicer building and us higher taxes. The question still remains. Will it improve their education? I really don't think it will. Thats my opinion and no I'm not running for office.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Good for you, Jeff. Best of luck...and thanks for being smart and educated when it comes to why the best time to try and get this new building is now......not 5 or 8 years from now when we "think" things will be "better".
Nothing gets better if we don't make attempts to do so now.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Don't listen to a guy that doesn't even send his kids to the school district he lives in. John is full of hot air and would be terrible in any office because you can tell by his posts he's very negative on just about everything. He's entitled to his opinion, but his kids don't go to Greenville, so he doesn't want to pay for anyones else's kids to try and get something nice to improve - yes improve - their education.
My opinion, and I'm entitled to one too, is for Mike to be quiet or put his kids in Greenville Schools. They are good schools - my kids do great (as do their friends), and they have fine teachers who work hard everyday.
As for the job thing - no, a new school does not bring in new jobs. True. But it is a need for the school system I believe. Don't forget that when it is being built - people will be employed - and I don't care if they are from here or not. People will be working here and spending money here to get that building up. That is a plus. True, not a permanent plus, but a positive none the less.

  23. you tell me that a student could learn more from a new school. it goes back to the teachers they should be able to teach are kids in greenville in any building or a shack.it is still 4 walls and a roof

    ReplyDelete
  24. I'm Lynne Butts and i want Greenville to have a school that we can be proud of. Paying more taxes is something that nobody wants to do..but all in all Greenville is a pretty cheap place to live. We all need to pull together as a economically hard hit community!!! Remember you get what you pay for!! If you have a second rate school you are going to have a second rate education!!! Lets get a new school, lets get new books, lets collect the best teachers pay them what they should be paid (in line with the rest of the U.S.) and get our kids educated and turn this city around!!!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Why do people keep saying a new school will result in getting better teachers? No it won't! That's like saying a new courthouse will result in Darke County getting better attorneys or better judges.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Really dukeblackohio, I don’t have a clue? You said, “Yes greenville does need a new school but I think there is another way there has to be.” That’s pretty vague and offers no solution. How do you think most new public schools are built? The community pays for them in the form of a tax levy. In recent years, schools in Ohio are being built with funding from the OSFC in conjunction with a tax levy. The method works and it has been proven school building after school building, including the rest of Darke County.

Thinking like mine put us in the present situation? I contest that it’s thinking like yours. We can sit around all day and point fingers, detail mistakes of previous school board members, and have the same-old, same-old. But if you continue to do the same thing you are going to get the same result. Is the current state of affairs the result we want?

If everyone would pull their noses out of the past and point to the future we could get a little farther. Continue to bitch, whine, moan, groan, and find fault with anyone who tries to make progress if you want. However, as I said earlier, if you aren’t part of the solution then you’re part of the problem. If we really want a better Greenville and better Darke County then let’s do something about it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @dukeblackohio - Property tax records indicate North School was built in 1901. I don't know about you but I wouldn't consider that a "fairly new building".

    ReplyDelete
  28. Regarding school consolidation. Yes, we have totally missed the boat and will be maintaining many more schools in Darke County than are required to more efficiently provide a better education. But let us not overlook the reason for this insanity. The biggest enemy of school consolidation is the collection of school mascots. This group of stout-hearted warriors, along with parents and supporters, is undefeated. Darke countians will pay more for less educational opportunity for many years to come. This will be a victory for Patriots, Jets, Trojans, Blackhawks,Railroaders, Waves and two sets of Tigers.

  29. 8:01 just made the BEST comment on this board! Well done, well done.

Oh, I'm voting yes. Not because it will bring jobs. Not because the teaching will be better. Not because it will look pretty..... I'm voting yes becuase there is a need for a new buildling in our district. Period.

    ReplyDelete
  30. If 8:01 was the best comment 8:08 is the second best. That's exactly what it comes down to. Not what we can gain on the side, but the primary goal of a new building. We know the job outlook is bad, it is everywhere, we can't control that. There's nothing we can put here that will bring in the industry we once had, especially a new school. You can't tell me Susie is doing this for another factory. And you can't also tell me Susie is doing this for better teachers because Greenville's teachers are top notch. Susie is doign this because there is a need for a new building. Plain and simple.

  31. Thanks Jeremy...I'm gald that you agree with me. I wish more people did!

  32. Has anyone thought about the extra cost for the extra busing for all the kids that now walk to school? Will we also need to buy more buses? How much extra fuel and will we have to pay more bus drivers? And will our children be in route to and from school for longer periods of time?
I think there is many things to think about,if anyone knows the answers to these questions please post.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If that building was built in 1901 it has weathered rather nicely.I dont no I am not from here.I do no that a tax Levy is not the only way to fund a school Josh f.Where I come from the schools are funded bye the earnings from the lottery and they dont have to pass a levy every time they need to build a new school or they need to pay for operation cost over runs.I will say it again Yes we need a new school but there has to be another way to fund it.Yes I would agree with. Its thinking like yours that has put us in this situation but I am sure that we will have a new school one way or the other so relax.OH and one more thing I dont set around and bash people I try to stay busy because I am unemployed and hoping for change localy so maybe me and the other 10 percent of darke countians can go back to work.

    ReplyDelete
  34. @Anon 4:11 - Last time we had a reorganization busing was done incredibly efficiently. I don't have the answer to that but some things can't be avoided. You can't tell me that even if it means the buses go an extra ten miles, or a kid is on the bus for an extra twenty minutes, that we shouldn't go for a new school. Knowing the people that route the buses I bet we won't need anyone additional, no additional buses, and there is no adverse change in times. I encourage you to email Susie. I guarantee you'll get a prompt answer.

@dukeblackohio - I think you were called on this before, what's the other way to fund it? This has been an ongoing issue for years. I can imagine if there was some forgotten way sitting around they would have found it. They did find some state funding, I assume partially from lottery, to help us. That's why we don't have to pay the entire bill. As far as lottery funds go I'm sure we get some, but it's not like it's an account we can just draw from. They have to be given to us by the state which is obviously not being done. So despite what they would do where you came from, this is what we need to do. This is how we get our new school. I encourage you to help us make it happen. Does it suck that taxes will go up? Yes. Is it rough already being out of work? Absolutely. But you said it yourself, we need a new school.

Even the people of don't agree with the levy say it: WE NEED A NEW SCHOOL!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Jereny M you are so full of crap about"Last time we had a reorganization busing was done incredibly efficiently". It was horrible. I can remember parent really to roit. Kids were not getting home until very late.

    ReplyDelete
  36. For three days I recall? You flip your entire routine backwards and do it smoothly. With no additional personnel or bus purchases I might add. Fixed in the first week and I stand by that when they rerouted everything they did a wonderful job. You can attack and be negative about whatever you want but I haven't heard a single complaint since that week.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Actually, busing costs would go down because the transportation is all going to one place instead of several buildings during the same time frame. The bus rides for the students will not be longer than they are now - and if they are, it won't be by enough to crow about.
The school will also save some money by not having to pay the traveling teachers, who are paid milage for going in-between buildings thoughout the day (believe me, that adds up!).

I look at it this way (actually, someone else said this, but I agree)... the new building will not bring jobs, it will not make the teachers better than they already are. But, a new facility is needed. That's why I'm voting yes.

    ReplyDelete
  38. no matter what you say jeremy m I will not vote yes on something that will add a bigger bourdon on people all ready out of work and not making any money.Do we need a new school yes do we have the money for it NO so the best thing to do is wait until we do or until the state pays for more of it.OH yeah jeremy m it is not my problem that the state is ripping your lottery dollars off So why dont you take your investagative mind and figure that one out instead of trying too pick a argument with me because im done.NOW IS NOT THE TIME.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Are you all aware that there is a tax levy and a bond issue on the same ballot? They are voted as a single issue, The bond is for 37 yrs and the tax levy is for 23 yrs. Two for one money-wow what a bargain-not for the home owner!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I am blessed to work in a new school building but its not in Darke county-had to go out of town for a job. Are the students any smarter than when they were in an old building? I have yet to notice it. Do they appreciate the latest equipment? Sure, they want to play games and surf the net when they should be researching on the computer. Teachers are constantly told to turn off the overhead because the lightbulbs are very expensive. So new building does not effect the education-if the levy passes and no new businesses come to town within 5 yrs. do we get our money back??

    ReplyDelete
  41. 10% of us are out of work. Even if every one of those 10% were married and their spouses voted no as well 20% would say no. I'm tired of that excuse. It's obviously more than that.

Now is not the time. Five years won't be the time. Ten years won't be the time. People will never want to part with their money if they don't have to. Nobody is ever going to enjoy paying taxes. We could all be in jobs and prosperous we still wouldn't want to pay more in.

You're right, we should just wait for someone else to take care of our problems. Wonderful idea. Wait for the state to take care of. It's not my problem the lottery doesn't pay for it either, it's nobodys. That's why I'll be voting yes. We need to take care of our own. I don't personally care about the lottery money so I won't bother. I care about getting a new school as it is needed, as you yourself said. You obviously don't know what need and want means. Need means we need it now no other choices. We need it, just not now is what you're saying. If you really thouht we needed it you would be voting for it.

Now is not the time. Tomorrow is not the time. Next month is not the time. Ten years is not the time. There is no time like the present. If you keep putting it off it will never get done. Period.

  42. "Farmers who are participating in CAUV (current agricultural use value) will pay less than 50 cents an acre annually (considering income tax implications) plus the cost assessed as a homeowner which is a maximum of $118.65 per year for a $100,000 home."

If $118.65 a year breaks your budget maybe you should vote no. And reassess your own situation, barely more than a quarter a day.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Jeremy you don't know the difference in wants and needs. Our current building can last for many more years. So its a want not a need for a new building.

Bill, 118.65 proably won't break people, but maybe people have assess their situation and that adds an burden on them. Me personally, I would rather spend the money on other invetments that I think will have a good return. Go on and say that a new building will so much improve our childrens education. I know its will be made out of magic bricks. Does the superintendent live in the school district? If she doesn't, Why should I support her district she doesn't even live in. Someone said not to listen to me because I send my children to another school in the county. Well I have heard that the superintendent children go to other school, not Greenville. Then why should we listen to her????

  45. Who cares were she lives the fact is we DO need a new school and I still say there are other ways to come up with the money.I moved back here in 2002 and the reason for me moving here was for the schools but I relize now that was the wrong choice.Since I have been here I only no of one new business that has opened and that is the ethanal plant.I have seen a ton of them close there doors and lay people off me being one of them.So now I find my self having to up root my family and go looking for some where better all though I doubt there is a place were it is any better. It is rough every where.Yes greenville needs a new school but I say there has to be another way.

I must agree with Jeremy M on all accounts. There will always be an excuse to "invest" your money elsewhere. Why not into your own community and kids? Your "return" will be received over and over again for a long time.

There are many reasons to build this new middle school. You need to get all the facts, then you would vote yes on Feb. 2.

If you cannot afford the extra $118 per year (based on a 100,000 home), maybe you should be moving into something less expensive. Redo your budget or make one, quit smoking, drive less, eat at home, use coupons. There are many ways to cut expenses.
Now IS the time, vote yes.

    Lowes (maybe since 2002?)
    Rent A Center
    Premier Video

Those who closed up shop could it have been because people just didn't have the money to use their service? Also has anyone checked their real estate taxes for 2010? Mine jumped $100 and I live in a 900 square foot home-very small. My friend's jumped $200. New appraisels. Get on line and check your new taxes or call the courthouse so you won't be too shocked when your bill arrives probably after we all go to the polls.

  58. Are you sure? I think every one of those is still in, only Taco Bell was existing beforehand. Not gonna argue with you over it as I think I made my point to him. Many closed as well, but several have indeed opened. I'ms sure many factors went into them closing.

And yes property taxes did go up. That tends to be what they do. I am still a firm believer in the cause.

  59. Community voted in favor a 3 year operating levy last spring.

The tax duplicates for 2010 is the first time this levy will be included. Impact is 8-12% increase. For 3 years.

The GCS district has been upfront about this.

However, since vote to approve last year, easy to forget until impacts the property tax duplicates.

  60. I think this whole blog site is out of hand. Are you all proud of yourselves? Everyone has a right to his own opinion. I am still not sure how I am voting. My taxes just went up over $200 a year which isn't too bad but add another increase and it gets tight.

  61. I'm pretty proud yes, standing up for something I believe in, voicing my opinion as the first amendment allows me to do, working towards a better future for the schools. I would say so. I should hope everyone gets the opportunity to do the same at some point in time for something they believe in.

  63. We live in Gettysburg and our children went to Greenville schools until the 9th and 7th grades then we opened enrolled them to Bradford. They have been there for 2 years. I will be voting FOR the LEVY.. We so intend to sell our home when our children leave for college.. At that reason it makes sense to have a school system that people would want to move to to send their children to. A community is only what they will invest into their kids. Try to to sell your home in 5 or more years when the schools are completly worse than they are now. For the parents who attend sporting avents how many schools are newer than say 75 years old.
NOW IS THE TIME!!!! Man, send a messeage to the kids that they do count!!

  64. Yes, there are new businesses, but low paying jobs are they. I agree that our children, and thier education is the most important thing. But We could do much better in letting businesses in our community. But for some reason we don't. I just see these little businesses coming in and then in a short time closing up. We need to think of the big picture and stop being the closed minded people and let more bigger businesses in. That creates more revenue for Greenville. Look at Versailles they have it made, because they have the best interest for their town

  65. So, you sent your children to Bradford based soley on the premise that they had a newer building?

  66. Let the government of Greenville let the citizens know they count by spending wisely and allow business into town. Then maybe the citizens will be behind them in their decissions. The poor decissions and the irratic spending needs to stop. I agree we need a new school but there are bigger problems than the decaying school buildings. Lets fix the rest first and get everyone on the same page and then build. We need to build a new government in this town first, a progressive one!!!!!
