Health Department shuts down El Camino Real

The parking lot at El Camino Real was empty during the lunch hour Saturday as the restaurant has been closed by the Darke County Health Department.

A notice in the front door, dated August 13, 2010, alleges violations of Section 3.2A and 2.2C of the Ohio Administrative Code, but those  sections do not exist (check for yourself). The notice further indicates "critical violations," but does not expand upon what the violations are.

Several people have contacted DarkeJournal to say they ate at El Camino Real Friday without any trouble or concern about the food. Let's hope the matter is cleared up quickly.

Update: the code sections referenced are probably under OAC Section 3717-1.

  1. I'll be back to eat the day the door opens.

If they did a real investigation of each restaurant in town nobody would be open!

  2. This is too bad. I have been wanting to go to this resturant, now I don't know if I will.

  3. I went in there right after it opened, and it's way too crowded in there. They should have kept their old building.

  4. I went there a couple weeks ago, very clean, and nice inside. Food was very good. I'll be back.

  5. the food was always good and hot when we ate there.

  6. Oh, durn...after 3 margaritas, who would have even noticed? Well, no matter how bad it supposedly was, it couldn't have been any worse than that hideous "steak" place that used to be there...

  8. I am glad the health inspectors to check on our restaurants. None are above letting health issues slip through. I will eat there again when they reopen. They will probably be one of the safest places in Greenville then.

  9. Absolutely Bob, I agree. I say kudos to the health dept. for trying to keep the public healthy. If someone would have gotten sick or even died, then everyone would have been on the Health Dept. heavily for "NOT" doing there job. Thank you!

  10. sounds to me like someone isn't very happy they moved

  11. that is true if alot of restaurants were checked in darke county more often alot would be shut down. i personally love the food. hope you open soon:)

  12. is it true they dont have a/c either? sounds like they are cutting corners!

  13. I find it very interesting that in the city of Greenville a business can be closed in a moments notice because there exist the pontential that someone can get sick. But a "business" that houses sexual predators can continue to operate.

  14. I think the health department should do more inspections and post the results online just like they do in Muncie. Even the Star Press does it. It allows you to look up the history of the restaurant.

  15. The a/c is working now. I've been to the new location twice and at the old location many times. I have never been ill from their food. I will go back. Could happen to any restaurant.

  16. Mr Veteran, agreed. Maybe we should let the Health Dept. take care of that "Good Samaratin" home. I'd love to see it gone!!

  17. I have seen a lot of local restaurants violate that above referenced code. Especially when seeing them make or handle food and then with the same gloves go handle the money, then go back and make someone else's food. Money is one of the dirtiest things to handle. I haven't been to the new location yet, but I agree it's good the Health Dept. is making it safe to eat.....but they need to check all the restaurants.

  18. 9:54 a.m. It should go without saying that "ALL" restaurants are inspected. I'm not certain how many times this occurs, but they can't be everywhere all the time!! These restaurant workers should be properly trained when they are hired on how to handle food. Not sure that happens either!

  19. Yet the Maid Rite has gum all over the walls. That is a very Critical Violation, yet the health department does nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  20. but the employees preparing the food are not outside where the gum is on the building, and they do wear gloves. they are in the open for all to see them. i really like the maidrite's food.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Agreed, about the gum, yeah it's gross but it's on the walls (OUTSIDE)! How is that a health violation?

    ReplyDelete
  22. If that is what this is all about, what about the Dragon Buffet, McDonald's, Papa Johns, etc. Where are the hairnets, blue band aids, and of course what about all the food concessions that will be at the fair. I've been to all and can point out numerous violations in all. To shut them down may be too harsh if it is pretaining to hand washing, warning then shut down if it continues.

    ReplyDelete
  23. If gum on the wall is a concern to you while at the Maidrite, don't eat there. It's on an outer wall, clearly separate from the food prep area, and not within reach of those with (gloved) hands in the food. Your not eating there should solve your problem, and not hurt business knowing how busy they can be, and all the sandwiches that literally are shipped in coolers all over the country.

As for El Camino, wash your hands, don't touch your face, and teach the young/new employees the job. You'll have no problem.

  24. My friend had talked to the owner Tony, and he said that his brother in law got into a fight with the health department because they (Tony and his brother in law) want to move the buffett to a different area and the health department will not approve it at all because of cross contanimation. So since they got into an argument they shut it down. They are however having a meeting with the health department Monday.

  25. Well, 7:25, read into it whatever you wish, I'm pretty sure at this point they will tell a person whatever they want to make them look better. They have more than likely had warnings before and did NOT correct them accordingly, I'm pretty confident they are leaving part of the story out to their benefit. I don't think the Health Commisioner would allow that to happen.

I'm not concluding anything about el camino - or the health department. But it seems very suspicious that el camino just opened up, and already they're a target. It smells.

  27. I love that place! Hope it all works out and they reopen! I cannot live in Greenville without Mexican food!

  28. Hahaha, El Comino gets shut down but Mcdonalds and Taco Bell and crap can stay open. Honestly, no one knows what to trust anymore and if every place got checked I do not believe we'd really have anywhere to eat but 5 star restraunts and such. I will continue eating at El Comino. I have never had a problem with their food and I have been to the new location twice and the old location many many times.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I'll eat at El Camino...it's good and I've never had a problem there at all-even seen the kitchen, it's fine. Now...why doesn't the health dept. make a pop inspection on Arbys or Burger King? If there are two places in town that need to be cleaned up, it's them!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Are you kidding me? The Health Dept. does not shut down a restaurant for NO REASON! How many times has this happened? Hardly ever! I would say they had very good reason to shut them down and they were warned before it happened. So if you people want to stick up for El Camino, then don't complain if you get sick after eating there! All restaurants are subject to inspections. If you have complaints, report them!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with T...if a restaurant is closed by the health dept believe me there is a very good reason! They do not mess with ppl for the fun of it. Especially in this economy...They give license holders every opportunity to make things right & to be closed by them is a sign things are really being left go. The health dept did their job now its up to you to decide whether to go back.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I will definately go back. I have seen alot worse go on at other restaurants. At El Camino the food is good and so are the people.

  33. My family ate there on Wednesday before they were closed. I think we all should be very cautious about everywhere we eat. I used to have a friend whov would ask to see the kitchen before she ate at any eating place. Maybe thats a good idea

  34. Aren't the restaurants given a grade? I know they are here where I live now. When we visited family we ate there and no one got ill. Food was great. This was before they moved. I just thought they were really cramped.
What a shame if this goes under like everything else in that area.

  35. Wash hands, clean utensils, and everything else Josh F posted. ( Thank you) I wouldn't buy deli food, or meat or bakery items at any store then. Ever been in a restroom and a store employee is as well and they leave without washing their hands?? See it all the time.....quite disturbing and disgusting. I have seen large utensils dropped on floors, wiped off and put back, by customers at a buffet. Or how many people have touched that same item??? Sneezed on food? Guess we better quit eating all together.
