  1. I am surprised this has not happened more often than it does. In this day and age horse drawn buggies have no place on our roads.

  2. We saw this boy minutes before this awful accident had to have happened. I commented on how pretty the buggy and horse were and how young the driver was. I wondered if he was going courting. Prayers for all involved.

  3. This is why the buggies need to be banned from all 55mph roadways. They are simply nothing but an accident waiting to happen.

  4. 10:21-That is really a shame. Tragic for all involved. I think maybe we do need to update some safety issue to deal with 2010. How old are some of our traffic laws?

Ban buggies from 55 mph roads? You do realize that probably 99% of the population that use these LIVE on 55 mph roads in the country.... How many of them do you KNOW that live in town? idiot.

  6. Why should they be discriminated against because they choose a horse/buggy for transportation? should we ban slow moving farm machinery/tractors from the road too?
Our society is so fast paced and multi tasking with no patience....maybe we are the problem?!!!!! I know I am guilty of feeling slowed down when a slow moving vehicle is on the road when technically I should be more patient and tolerable to the situation.

  7. if they should be banned then tractors should too, im not complaining bc i know they were just doing a job im just saying that if one should be stopped then all should.

  8. 3:42.. Resorting to name calling is a sure sign you can't argue on facts.

It's not a matter of where they live, it's a safety issue. I can't count how many times around Gettysburg I have about ran into these people when coming over the top of a back road somewhere DOING THE LEGAL SPEED LIMIT. Farm vehicles are a different issue. They have no other choice, these dunkards and old order do. They can buy a damn car using all that money they save not paying taxes, buying license plates or paying tax on their gas and diesel.

It's 2010, if they want to live simple lives let them, but stop risking peoples safety in the process.

I wasn't name calling, I was stating the obvious. Banning them from 55 mph roads.... come on, get real. An absolutely stupid idea.

  10. Then if they are going to use public roadways, they should be required to pay for yearly tags and registration. They should have to have fully functioning lights (even tractors have that), they should be required to follow child safety guidlines just like automobiles. Why is it fair if I drove down the end of my street with my child unbuckled, and an officer saw me, I could be fined hundreds of dollars, yet these people are given a pass with their wife and 12 kids riding on their trailers through busy traffic? It's absurd.

If they want to enjoy the use of public roadways, let them start paying for them, and pay taxes like the rest of us do.

  11. " I have about ran into these people when coming over the top of a back road somewhere DOING THE LEGAL SPEED LIMIT"

Then you are going too fast for conditions, that is YOUR fault, you are required to operate your vehicle with "due regard", look that up.

  12. people are amazing. We still live in America where people are free to choose whatever life they wish

    ReplyDelete
  13. At least 95% of the people are speeding on these 55 MPH roads. Then add all the cell phones and texting while they are driving.
Sounds more like people should slow down and pay attention. That is the REAL safety issue.
It's funny how people talk about banning something that they perceive to cause them a slight inconvenience.

    ReplyDelete
  14. So you want to take away thier religious freedom by making them get cars? Oh and they do pay all taxes but Social Security (they also don't use it). And although I live on a farm, don't you have to slow down for farm machinery? Tell me how it is any different. Farmers using off road diesel do not pay a tax on it? So that is different how? Before you blow your top these people have the same rights as we do and they leave everyone else alone. So why not just leave them alone? They are some of the hardest working honest to goodness people out there, I say just be cautious and respectful like you should be to everyone!

  15. if you ban these then you need to ban everything that moves slow..from tractors to bicyclist...i grew up with the buggies in the neighborhood and find it not to be a problem....was the driver tx or talkin on a cell phone or fumblin with the radio....everybody needs to get the facts first instead of condeming the persons that was hit...should be the other way around...we all need to slow down and pay more attention on whats on the roadways...

    ReplyDelete
  16. They have every right to be on the road. If you are going to ban them then whats next? Tractors? Bicycles? Joggers? As long as the person driving the buggy is following all state laws then he shouldn't have gotten hit. That area of road is straight and flat and he should have been seen. I realize I don't know all the facts but it sounds like the driver of the vechicle wasn't paying close enough attention.

  17. I say we ban people walking along the side of the road. They need to get fatter and just drive everywhere.

  18. Driving is a privilege not a right. We are the ones who need to use diligence when on the road. The Amish and Old Order German Baptists live in a country that guarantees their right to freedom of religon. Leave them alone they are not hurting us. I could not think of someone I would rather have as a neighbor.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Wow, some of you people are pretty mis informed about the amish religion. First of all they have the same rights to use the roads as we do. They do pay taxes on everything they earn. If you think they shouldnt be able to use their means of transportation on 55mph roads, then you shouldnt run farm equipment, ride bikes, rollerblade, or operate anything else thats not capable of going 55mph. Some of you need to get away from the computer for a while....

  20. UH...does anyone know what happened to the driver and horses of the wagon? Hope they're ok!

  21. As of last night he was in ICU with some bleeding on the brain...havent heard any other updates today other than he has a good chance of recovering from the injuries.

  22. Common Sense is the issue here. Just as if you drive to Adams County, Indiana, it's an area known for the Old Order communities. There are several families as well, that live in the Gettysburg, Bradford, and Covington area. Most buggies do have slow moving vehicle signs, and some have flashers for after dark.

    Remember this phrase: Public Roadways

If you can't pay attention to traffic around you, wait for the fair and stick to the bumper cars.

  23. And that my friends is what is wrong with this whole society.....judging without really knowing first what you are talking about. Seems to me there is a whole lot of that going around....must be a sickness. Where is the compassion for others around us? Obviously not alive and well in this area...how sad for us.

    ReplyDelete
  24. They have been in Adams Co. for YEARS and have had a few problems with accidents, but not near like WE do in our cars. There, they have built the road so they can drive their buggies off to the side if a car is coming. It helped alot and there have been no accidents. I agree we should all be watching out for them or anything else in the roadway. When you drive, its your responsibilty.Hope they are ok...

  25. Was the horse killed? I hope the boy will be OK.

  26. Just a comment about Rte 41 or Rte 36 being a 55 MPH roadway. Does anyone drive 55 MPH on Rte 41 between Covington & Troy or on Rte 36 between Greenville & Piqua? When I drive on Rte 36 towards Covington I set my cruise control at about 58, & most people are tailgating me and/or passing me while talking on their cell phones.

People should slow down & be more aware! Let's stop blaming the victim.

    ReplyDelete
  27. They had to put the horse down and the boy was in critical condition, not sure if thats changed.

    ReplyDelete
  28. All horse and buggy drivers are probably ex sex offenders - we should ban them all.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree with 4:13...Where is the compassion? For those of you blaming the buggy being slow...What if it had been a child on a bike??? Would you be blaming the child??? Most of the roads we travel today have 55mph limits. It is up to the individual driver of the vehicle (car, buggy, bike, farm equipment...) to do their best to keep everyone safe. It is not always the way it works. Accidents happen! We should be spending more effort toward compassion than blame. Prayers continue for all involved, including both families, the EMTs, doctors and nurses, police officers and those compassionate ones who stopped to help before officials arrived. They all have to deal with this accident.

  30. The law requires that a driver keep a SAFE distance AHEAD. Rear ending is the rear driver's fault! Oh, by the way, how about a little respect for the victim and and their family - we can talk about speed laws later.
Tail-gaters, those who drive down the middle of the road and across the yellow line on a blind curve, etc are all potential manslaughteres.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 10-10 6:16-THAT IS THE BEST POINT! Fully functioning safety equipment IS THE LAW! There is no reason they can't buy safety seats and lights! They have every right to uses the roads,I agree. If I were in a buggy, I would have it lit up like a christmas tree-COMMON SENSE! I guess they must realize that being on the roadways with NO equipment is dangerous..kind of like if you ride a motorcycle w/o a helmet, you take that risk.

  32. Buggies shouldn't be banned from our roadways. Everyone has the right to live their lives the way they see fit. We all and I mean "all" need to pay closer attention to our surroundings and less attention to our cell phones/kids and other distractions when we're driving. Be responsible if you're going to be behind the wheel of a car.

    ReplyDelete
  33. For the ones questioning the buggies right to be on the roadway. The buggy was meeting all regulations. It had a slow moving vehicle sign as required and also had flashing lights. For anyone that has been to Wayne and Holmes county Ohio then you will notice the roadways are not any different then they are here. Those two counties have the largest number of Amish in the state. The the amish are wonderful people and they would do anything for anyone. I support their believes 100 percent. Please pray for this family.

  34. What next? Should we ban alcohol now to keep drunk drivers off the road?

    ReplyDelete
  35. I still cringe when I see a tractor pulling a flat bed trailer with kids riding on it down a highway. I have seen this several times. If I allow my grandaughter to ride in my vehicle without a seatbelt I am a criminal. I think the double standard is what bothers people most.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Looking at the photo tells me it was daytime, so even if it did lack lights, the buggy could easily been seen. As for ridding our roads of anything that goes less than 55 mph. Show me a jogger who meets that requirement? I come down Ohio street early every morning and I cannot begin to count how many times I am "surprised" by runners without proper gear that glows in the dark. I have been lucky that they were running on the opposite side of the road but still it shocked me to see these individuals. Yes, lets all keep everyone involved in this accident in our prayers. I am sure the driver of the vehicle is quite upset by what has happened.

    ReplyDelete
  37. ok, the dunkards do drive cars and they pay taxes and insurance, it is the old orders belief not to drive cars so we should let live their lives the way they see fit. why is it everybody wants to push change onto everyone else? I say live and let live

    ReplyDelete
  38. WE ALL THANK THAT IT HAS TO BE ARE WAY OR LET US STOP IT NOW BUT WE ALL SHOULD BE HERE FOR EACH OTHER STOP IT NOW LOVE THEM ALL '

    ReplyDelete
  39. Agree with 8:39. Simply enact a law making it illegal to get within 1500 feet of a 55 mph highway with a buggy and your problem is solved! Power to the people!

  40. to the sex offender comment. what is your IQ?

    ReplyDelete
  41. This accident happened early enough that you can not even blame the sun as being in the drivers eyes. What was she doing besides driving, her mind surely wasn't where it should have been.
Everyone needs to learn a lesson from this event, wake up when you are behind the wheel.
I too say pray for this young man and the lady who hit him too.

  42. Just heard the 911 call on the news. Driver didn't even apply the brakes! Just plowed right into it! THAT is lack of attention on part of ORANGE car. The driver of orange car was not hurt, the young man is still in critical right now. I think they should have sobriety tested the orange car...SOMETHING was going on in there or that person just shouldn't be driving.

  44. Just thought I would let you all know the driver was not texting or talking on her phone. This was a freak accident and could have happened to anyone! The driver already feels terrible about all of this! The family of the victim has given her FULL support and knows this was " a act of God". My support and prayers go to both driver, victim and all the family's on both sides! I just don't like it when people jump to conclusions and start making untrue statements. If you don't know the facts don't say it! Just remember all of your comments the next time you have a close encounter. We all have had them! Thanks!
