Varsity
The Green Wave varsity baseball team played truer to midseason form than for a season opener; receiving a strong pitching performance from Junior Tyler Zimmerman, strong days at the plate by Juniors Zach Weaver and Ryan Miller and a defense that only committed an error on the last play of the game that led to the final out.
The offensive highlights occurred early and often for the Wave, beginning with a sacrifice fly from Weaver to plate the inaugural run in the bottom of the first. In the 2nd, Miller led off the inning with a walk and managed to score from second base on a 2-out single by Junior SS Jon Edwards. The Wave the made the score 4-0 on Miller's first single of the game in the 3rd before the Flyers started to make things interesting.
In the top of the 4th Zimmerman experienced his first rough patch of the day that began with a leadoff double by the Marion Local third baseman. After a strikeout and a walk, the next two batters singled to cut the scoring deficit in half. In the 5th, Zimmerman was struck in the throwing elbow by a line drive that ended his day and would lead to Marion Local's 3rd run, but it was as close as they would get.
Answering the Flyer's rally Greenville scored 7 times over the final 2 innings, receiving big hits from Senior's Robbie Detling, Jason Howard and Matt Orth as well as Miller and Weaver. Marion Local managed to put together 3 runs in the top of the 7th before the final out occurred at the plate on a great defensive play by Miller.
Greenville will head to Wapakoneta on Tuesday night to play the Redskins at 5:00.
JV
The Greenville JV baseball team showed up ready to hit monday afternoon in their season opener, run ruling the Marion Local Flyers 15-3 in five innings. Karlin Ross picked up the win for the Wave pitching 5 and a third before giving way to freshman Ian Cook who recorded the final two outs. The Wave JV play at home today against Wapak, first pitch @ 5PM
