2011 November Election Postmortem

While the election is over and the dust is still settling, how do you feel about the outcomes? Darke County residents voted to stick with the current Municipal Judge, GCS will be forced to try again for a new school but with a new board member, and the city has a new councilman.

At the state level, issue 2 was defeated overwhelmingly. What are the ramifications of that for the governor?

Consider this the official "election fallout thread." Leave your election related comment below.

  1. I have two questions for the audience:
    1. What was done the final 2-3 weeks prior to the election on the behalf of the school levy? It seemed like a great push of excitement for the levy, but then nothing the final days before the election, the most important time.
    2. What will it take for the School Board (remaining members) and Superintendant of Greenville to put their egos aside and step down so the levy could possibly have a chance next time? They are the last remaining variable that nobody has changed.
    What say you people?

  2. Well, my vote didnt have anything to do with the questions you asked. Mine was all about more taxes. Our economy isnt the greatest. People are already losing their houses because they cant afford them anymore due to job loss, sickness and other things. Some people are saying we will be the next UC. Well, UC has a newer school and their economy is still in the toilet. Their property values are low. They said they are going to put it back on the ballot while the gov. money is still available. Maybe it will pass then. If our economy isnt any better then I will vote the same.

  3. It makes me wonder why I continue to support a community that refuses to support itself...

  4. Studebaker and his clan all need to resign immediately. Fair or not they harmed the chances of the levy passing were dealt a blow by their petty action against two good young people. Do not ask for another dollar until those people are all gone. People indeed are hurting with this economy. There have been many foreclosures in town. I don't blame anyone for voting no. The people have spoken several times now. Time for the school system to begin fixing the problems they can change, bullying, drugs and the level of academics in Greenville.

  5. It sounds as if this election was mostly about personal grudges and not the true needs of the community and the students. Greenville schools are doing an outstanding job with what little they have to work with. Perhaps next time people will put aside their petty grievances and support the students.

  6. Anon 9:34. If they do, will you step into their position? Doubt it! Its easier to complain from the sidelines. And they say the kids are lazy!!!!! Grow up.

  7. What ever happened to people and schools teaching their children what NO means and not to keep on asking till the child gets their way, apparently the school doesn't know what NO means because they won't quit asking till they get their way.

  8. Agree Anon 11:05.
Take responsibility, act like adults Greenville.
It all started going downhill with the former administration who have now branched themselves out to other Darke County Schools, DUI's and all.

  9. The Bd of Ed has already completed paperwork to get the levy on the ballot early next year. If we want the change in current administration, DEMAND IT. We are America. Only we as taxpayers can decide the fate of these individuals.

  10. We need to start a petition demanding that they step down. This circus needs to be shut down..When the superintendant will not allow a PTA in East school, parents must ask the question why???

  11. So I guess we are not allowed to call out the public on here for passing new tax levies for other things and not the school since my comment was deleted. Nice DJ. My comment wasn't even mean or nasty.

  12. I am a parent of children attending the GCS school and would like for them to be in better buildings with all the needed tech for them to learn. But I can not justify voting yes, and make sacrifices in our home to support the continued mismanagement of funds within the current administration. This summer a former teacher/principle was voted in to be a "Superintendent of Curriculum" making over 90,000 a year for a 5 year contract and working only a ridiculous amount of days a year. This information can be found in the school board minutes from the summer. I find this absurd that we are asking hardworking people in our community to support paying for a building when the administration is not willing to sacrifice. When will they start listening to the community, How many times does the levy have to fail before a change comes from within!

  13. You will have to throw them out because they will not leave on their own. This why you have this outrageous abuse of funds.Once they are in it becomes their own private company. They hire their friends and relatives regardless of qualifications.

  14. Use your voices contact your board members and let them know how you feel about the board and administration. Everybody had a chance to vote for new BOE members and it looks like they were ok with one of the old members staying on....

  15. Many of your complaints are misguided. The state and its auditors determine where money is to be spent. If you would take the time to go and discuss the money issues with the administration; you will find that you money is well administered. The $90000 dollar contract is for a full year not a couple of days. I respect your right to an opinion; You may vote yes or no on any issue. I only ask that you make it on accurate information.

  17. 90k a year is a lot of money, is there benefits with that?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ninety four thousand dollars a year for five years is a heck of a lot of money in this county for a school principal. It is insane, Riegle makes almost 96 thousand. Two hundred and fifty or so school days a year. Don't give me that story about them working so much. Hard to vote for a new school when you see them throwing money away like that.

  19. Call Carla Suber and ask. It is public knowledge. How much do the Vice-Presidents and President of the local banks make.

  20. as a grandparent of students in the greenvile school system and in the sports program, yes, I was disppointed in the handling of the coaches, but I want my grandchildren to be in safe and modern buildings, wake up citizens, lets put our children first.

  21. You people have no idea. Post a job for a super at $45K and see what you get. Of course, that is prolly too much too.

And ya, I did say you people!

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1:13--Man you should see what a doctor makes, lawyer makes, insurance man makes, chicken/ other farmer makes. You should hate all of them too.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Who said a super should only make 45k? The super here makes very good money, 95k I believe. She could retire today at 65k a year, is that not enough? The point was made that paying that kind of money for a principal is ridiculous and unjustified. Stop trying to change the argument.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Get the names of the other supers and principals in the county and check their wages. $95K is not unusual.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 95k for an elementary phys Ed teacher is outrageous.most supers have a doctorate does she??? No, but Greenville needed someone to hurriedly plug into the job because the former super stated that the board wanted to tell him who to hire and fire so they could run it themselves and he left..

  26. The former super was horrible. but he was interesting.

  27. I am sure that this No vote was, in part, due to the economy. My opinion is, that the bigger issue here is the voting public's lack of trust in the current BOE. Clearly, a lot of people have this same opinion. Studebaker, Bowman, and Scott need to step down, and Jim Sommers needs to take notice that he did not finish too far in front of Mrs. Banta, someone who did not appear to be well qualified for the BOE. One question I would have for the BOE is why, when their priority should have been passing a school levy, the approved to have the library levy put on the ballot at the same time. Seems like they may have shot the school levy in the foot.

  28. ACAA--what are you ever talking about. There are excellent rehab facitilies available.

  29. I find it appalling that we have a principle that is being paid for two positions (principle and Psychologist). So is each position considered part-time, I doubt it.

  30. @12:53:

"Crabs in a barrel" is an idiom often used to describe that thinking inherent in particular types of people that causes them to reach up and pull down anyone who might be getting ahead in their communities. Supposedly (and I have not attempted this at home; perhaps this would be a good experiment for you to test out this weekend?), crabs behave this way en masse when one of their brethren is attempting to escape from a barrel.

Lots of comments in this thread strike me as that kind of thinking.

Let me know if you need me to explicate any of the other nonsense that emanates from my keyboard. I have nothing but time.

  31. Ann: You've nailed it. And, you don't even need to pass moral judgment in reaching that conclusion. People who are unhappy with their own lives/failures, resent others' successes. It explains why successful communities support their schools and why our community doesn't. "If I ain't gettin' mine, you ain't gettin' yours." All that other stuff about the BOE, the land purchase, etc. is just people trying to rationalize a truth they can't admit to themselves.

We've identified the problem. The question is how do we marginalize these people so our community can move forward?

  32. Greenville Voters - Look at the schools around you in the county. Why would anyone want to go to Greenville City Schools anymore? Keep fighting over petty issues of the past and in the meantime, your children are the losers in all of this. Those of you that voted Yes, I would send my child to one of the other schools in the county and let those that voted No be miserable together.

  33. Mrs. Banta is quite capable of being a Bd member. She knows the problems within the school system and isn't afraid to make decisions that are right for the good of everyone. The supt's salary is $99,500 with 100% payment of retirement, medical and life insurance. That's public record at the Darke Co. Educational Center. Out of 8 schools, Greenville falls in the middle of Supt. compensation. Full payment on benefits greatly differs within all the schools. Most school employees contracts are for a year but only required to work 190 days a year.

    ReplyDelete
  34. You all need to come together and vote for the next school levy so all the administrators can have pot lick parties and give out more rases.
And don't forget all the new-school camitty members, they get special perks also.

    ReplyDelete
  35. If taxpayers want to make a statement, there is a Greenville School Board meeting at 6:00 pm at Memorial Hall this Thursday, Nov. 17. The Supt's contract is up for renewal. This is your time to voice your complaints and say YES or NO to the renewal of the contract. Let's join together and let our voices be heard. See you there.

  36. The assumption then would be that there will be a lot of anonymous people running for school board next time so that they can institute some of their good ideas.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Badge one I would hope so!! I do not think that under the current administration it could get any worse, but then I am an optimist!!

    ReplyDelete
  38. If a few of the people complaining has such great ideas, why don't you run for BOE? It is sad everyone wants to complain about current BOE and I belive there is some real WEAK LINKS on the BOE (1 just got re elected). In order to make a difference you have to run for election and step up to the plate. Go to the meeting Thursday night and SPEAK YOUR OPINION....they will listen!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Id vote for the levy if they just change the sup., and director of admin.

  40. is it the building or the teachers that educate the students?

    ReplyDelete
  41. Is it [one side of a false dichotomy] or [the other side of a false dichotomy]?

    ReplyDelete
  42. Now that the election is over the school board had another meeting on Nov.4 th to hold another election in March. It's in the board minutes on the school site for any one to see. Talk about listning to the public. It is our tax dallors they spend for these levys, so they don't care about our tax money.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I pay taxes. I want them to put it on the ballot again in March.

If they don't, they're wasting one of two more opportunities they have to get state assistance with the building project. To forego trying to attain that money when they have the ability to would be a potential waste of my future tax dollars (in that if we would finally pass this levy in the distant future without that assistance — fat chance, that— I'll be paying more than I would have otherwise had to).

As a member of the public, then, I believe they are listening to me. And others who agree with me.

So all in all I'd say they're listening to the public. Just not the public of which you're a member.
