Winter may not have “officially” arrived on the calendar but looking outside this week should remind us all that winter has indeed arrived for Darke County.
The Darke County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management encourages all residents to take time now to prepare for the upcoming winter.
The first basic step is to have a disaster supply kit in your home. Be sure the kit includes a three day supply of basic essentials such as drinking water, non-perishable food, battery powered radio, flashlight, extra batteries and a first-aid kit.
For winter it is recommended to add the following items: rock salt to melt ice on walkways, sand to improve traction, snow shovels and an alternate heating source with sufficient fuel and/or wood for your fireplace or stove along extra clothing and blankets.
It is imperative when using a generator, grill or any other gasoline or propane burning device to make sure to locate it away from doors, windows, vents or any area enclosed or partially enclosed area. Carbon monoxide detectors should also be installed throughout your home.
Next make a kit for your vehicle. If you get caught in a winter storm you could become stranded so make sure you have supplies to include: shovel, windshield scraper, flashlight, battery powered radio, water, snacks, first-aid kit, hats, mittens, blankets, and boots.
Check on elderly family, friends and neighbors. Many are limited to being able to travel during the winter so check in on them, make sure they have their supplies for winter.
Remember to stay informed about current and upcoming weather situations through local media outlets and the National Weather Service (NOAA). Every home should have a NOAA Weather Radio which can be purchased for under $40. This allows the receipt of weather watches, warnings and forecasts 24/7, directly from the National Weather Service. These radios are available locally and would make great gifts for the holidays.
Winter also brings flu season so ensure all medical prescriptions and vaccinations are current.
Take the time now and prepare you and your family for winter. Disasters can strike at anytime and anyplace. Are You Ready??
