Mercer County Sheriff Warns of Possible Scam

Sheriff Jeff Grey warns residents of a possible scam and attempt to steal or break into your home. Mercer County recently has had a similar type incident that was reported to Van Wert and Harding County Sheriff Offices.

A Mercer County resident had a male knock on the door who identified himself as a worker for the State of Ohio. The male told the homeowner he was there to install a free generator. The male wanted the homeowner to go to the back of the residence into a wooded area so he could show the homeowner where they would do the install. A female then approached them and started talking to the homeowner. Sheriff Grey suspects the female was there to try and distract the homeowner because the male walked away. Thankfully the homeowner became suspicious and went back into the residence and locked the door. A few minutes later the couple left.

Description of the male suspect: 5-8 to 5-10, medium build, with a shaven head.

Description of the female suspect: 5-4 to 5-5, weighing 130 pounds, reddish colored hair. The female was wearing an orange colored sweatshirt with “Americus” on the back.

Vehicle description: A newer model Red pickup truck with a cap on the back.

Sheriff Grey asks residents to be careful and report any type of suspicious activity immediately. Anyone with any information on the suspects or their vehicle are asked to call the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office Tip line at 567-890-8477.
