Reid Health to host three special events Nov. 16 & 18 for American Diabetes Month

Rory Schepisi
Three upcoming events at Reid Health will focus on diabetes prevention and care—and include an appearance by celebrity chef Rory Schepisi! The events are hosted by the Reid Health Diabetes & Nutrition Education Center and Reid Endocrinology Center.

The events include:

  • Lowering Your Diabetes Risk presentation – noon to 1 p.m., Monday, Nov. 16, Lingle Auditorium. Part of the My Reid Wellness Series, the event will feature Erica Kretchman, D.O., an endocrinologist at Reid Health, who will talk about how people can lower their diabetes risk. “Diabetes is a life-altering disease that can eventually damage your heart, kidneys and eyesight, among other things,” she said. “But in many cases, it is preventable through a lifestyle that includes a healthy diet and regular exercise. Our region has a higher incidence of diabetes compared to the rest of the state and country. It’s so important for people to do as much as they can to lower their risk.” Register by calling (765) 983-3230.
  • Free Glucose Screening, 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, parking lot behind 600 E. Main Street in Richmond (across from Morrisson-Reeves Library). This simple, “finger stick” test measures blood sugar, and can indicate whether a person may have diabetes. The “drive through or walk up” screening also will include breakfast to go and educational materials. Those who wish to participate are asked to fast for 12 hours prior to the test (water only). They can take medication as they normally would. No registration necessary.
  • Diabetes Workshop and Cooking Demonstration, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 18, Lingle Auditorium -- Southern celebrity chef and restaurant owner Rory Schepisi will share healthy recipes and show guests how to make a low-carbohydrate, full-flavor dish. The event also will include a presentation by a diabetes educator called “Diabetes 101: Staying Healthy.” The event is sponsored by the pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk and the Reid Health Community Benefit Department. Refreshments will be served. To register, call (765) 935-8575.
