Ladybug Garden Club Donates to Friends of the Greenville City Parks

No comments:
The Ladybug Garden Club is supporting community beautification with their donation to the Friends of the Greenville City Parks. The Greenville City Parks are not supported by a separate tax levy; the money for city park improvements and maintenance comes from Greenville City Income taxes that are budgeted according to city council. Recent budget cuts and dwindling tax revenue have left the city park at the end of the receiving line. The Friends of the Greenville City Park have formed a non-profit corporation and are accepting donations from individuals, families, and businesses to keep the park beautiful.

Barbara Skinner, President of the Ladybug Garden Club is shown making a donation to Jenny Clark, President of Friends of the Greenville City Parks and Barb stated, "We can't put a price on the memories we all have of our family times in the park and we need to give our support".

The Friends of the Greenville City Park committee is having an Island Dreams Party hosted by the Merchant House Restaurant on Nov. 5 Tickets to the party are $35 per person that includes, appetizers, drinks and entertainment.

MV-MVCTC FFA Members Attend Washington Leadership Conference

No comments:
Shaiann Livingston, Reporter

While attending the FFA Washington Leadership Conference,
Mississinawa Valley-MVCTC FFA members Shelby Manning and
Shaiann Livingston learned about the nation's capital and were challenged to
"live to serve."
The Mississinawa Valley-MVCTC FFA chapter, along with the help of a generous community and alumni association, had the opportunity to send two eager members to Washington D.C. for the Washington Leadership Conference.

Senior officers, Shaiann Livingston and Shelby Manning, headed to the nation’s capital for a five day experience to help develop their leadership skills. Their expectations were wildly exceeded! At the conference, the girls were roomed separately, along with three other girls chosen at random from FFA chapters across the country.

The conference as a whole was then split into “community groups”, each with one facilitator. These groups spent much of the conference together, getting to know one another and assisting with each other’s Living to Serve (LTS) plans. These plans were developed through the guided actions of the conference facilitators to emphasize the need for leaders in every community. Students were taught to formulate plans by recognizing their strengths, their passions, the advantages of diversity, needs in their communities, methods of advocacy, and developing active plans to relieve the needs around them. For example, Shaiann Livingston’s LTS plan is to raise money to make repairs and upgrades to the Union City Pool so children in the community have a safe and fun environment available to them.

The FFA motto is, “Learning to Do, Doing to Learn, Earning to Live, Living to Serve.” At the Washington Leadership Conference students were taught what it really means to “Live to Serve.” Students gathered to package meals for hungry US citizens through an organizations called Meals of Hope. Together, the 340 students that attended the conference packaged 60,826 meals to feed the local community! Early Voting is Available Now!

No comments:
I've never voted early in past elections. Partially because I was always plenty available on Election Day (November 8th!), but also because I sort of enjoy the excitement of going to the polling place and casting my vote on Election Day.

This year, though, I am not sure if I will have time to make it to the polling place on Election Day proper, so I took advantage of voting early. To be honest, when it is available, I may never vote on election day ever again.

The Board of Elections has hours available every day (including weekends) until the day before Election Day. All you need to do is bring a valid form of ID/address verification and fill out a short form to confirm your address and other information. They have plenty of signage directing you where to go and helpful folks that will answer any questions you may have.

I wanted to bring this up, since I'm not sure if everyone is aware of how accessible early voting is. I'll put it this way: my wife and I took our 5 and 2 year old along with us on a day and at a time that was convenient for us and were in and out in maybe 10 or 15 minutes. That in and of itself is tremendously more convenient and even much less stressful than going on Election Day and hoping to hit the our polling place at a time when the line is as small as possible.

My advice? Vote early, get it out of the way, and relax with the knowledge that you've done your civic duty while you wait for the results to be announced late on the evening of November 8th.

Click here to visit the Darke County Board of Elections' site, which has tons of information about early voting, most importantly, a list of all the hours they are open to take your vote.

James Alexander Thom Book Signing at DCP

No comments:
Darke County Parks is pleased to announce that the “New York Times” bestselling author James Alexander Thom will be visiting the Shawnee Prairie Nature Center on November 12, at 1pm for a book signing of his new release Fire in the Water. Thom is the well-known historical fiction novelist of Follow the River, Long Knife, The Red Heart, Sign-Talker, From Sea to Shining Sea, and Panther in the Sky among many others.

Fire in the Water follows the story of two decidedly different men traveling together to pay their respects to one of America’s most beloved presidents after our nation’s deadliest war. Its synopsis reads “Early in the Civil War, when Abraham Lincoln shook Paddy Quinn's hand, grinned and winked at him, the war correspondent felt as if he'd been given a medal. At the end of the war, "Father Abraham" lies dead by an assassin's bullet, but Quinn's writing hand still feels that grip, "like warm iron," pulling him. He gets himself assigned to cover the President's burial in Springfield, Illinois for Harper’s Weekly, and boards the doomed steamboat Sultana to go up river and write Lincoln’s elegy.

Private Robbie Macombie, a deathly sick prisoner of war, always felt that he was soldiering not for "the Union," but for Abe Lincoln, who grew up just like him laboring in hardscrabble frontier Indiana. That sense of kinship makes him want to go to the funeral more than home, if he can stay alive long enough.

And so the two war-addled men, each one's strengths balancing the other's weaknesses, join like converging rivers in a life-current strong enough to carry them through the sudden horror of the worst maritime disaster in American history.

Prize-winning historical novelist James Alexander Thom, compassionately creates these two pilgrims as eyewitnesses of that tragedy. Both learn, as desperate men do, that Fate has wiser plans for them than their own.”

Everyone is invited to attend this exciting book signing at the Shawnee Prairie Preserve Nature Center just west of Greenville on State Route 502. For any questions, please call the center at (937) 548-0165.

The Mississinawa Valley- MVCTC FFA officer team consists of Madison Stachler, Shelby Manning, Mason Hummel, Kelsie Hunt, Will Hall, Cody Dirksen, Blake Scholl, Shaiann Livingston, Justin Miller, Tom Schmitz, Kyler Mote, Emily Schmitz, Sidnie Hunt, and Olivia Murphy. This group of charismatic young leaders met over a three days and two nights at The Light Foundation's Chenoweth Trails for a leadership retreat. Brian Rehmert was a huge help in organizing this outing for the group and making sure all was well during the students’ experience.

Throughout the retreat, students were paired with one another to perform tasks such as cooking meals, starting camp fires, team building activities, and setting goals for the year. The goal was to encourage younger leaders that are just as capable and valuable as their senior members. Together the group has made several changes to the traditional plans of the MV FFA chapter. The students are hoping to be able to give more to their community this year than ever before in an attempt to show gratitude for the full support that has always been offered to them. Thanks goes to Brian Rehmert and The Light Foundation for the opportunity to use the facility. All Souls Day are times of reflection and remembrance
for the dearly departed.
On All Saints Day, November 1st at 5:30pm, join Darke County Parks at Greenville Union Cemetery to pay respect to local history and to check out a birding hotspot.

From philanthropist Fred Coppock, to the county’s early pioneers and from six US Congressmen to the only man ever legally hanged in Darke County, these names have quite the stories to tell. While we wander back in time, we’ll also keep an eye out for late fall migrating birds and arriving winter residents. Whether you’re a birder, a history buff, or both, bring your binoculars for this quiet evening hike through the cemetery. Meet at the cemetery office on the corner of West St. and Main St. in Greenville, and dress for the weather.

A story about a Dad, his Daughter, his Grand Daughters and their new dog

No comments:
GREENVILLE - A year ago Gary Arnett’s family wanted a new dog. His Daughter and Granddaughters decided to set up a Lemonade stand during the 127 garage sales to raise money to adopt a dog.

These girls did a super job with the lemonade stand and went to the Darke County Animal Shelter and found their new best friend. Their new friends name is Minnie and she is a Chocolate Lab. Minnie has been such a wonderful addition to the family the girls decided they wanted to do more.

This year the girls sat up another Lemonade stand during the 127 garage sales. Their goal was to help out the Animal Shelter any way they could. They decided to donate all the money they made from the
stand to the Animal Shelter. They are so happy with Minnie; they felt it was just the right thing to do.

The girls, their dad/grandfather and Minnie came to the Darke County Animal Shelter and made the donation. The Officers at the Shelter were so surprised; they didn’t know what to say. They all remembered Minnie and were so happy she went to such a loving and caring family. All they could say was thank you.

In the picture are Officers Thomas and Sanning, along with Allena, Alexis, Gary and Adalynn Arnett. In the front row is Minnie Arnett.

Shelby County Bassmasters were able to put on this event as a result of local fisherman participating in bass tournaments throughout the year with a modest portion of the entry fee going toward the purchase of individual poles for each child. Other sponsors included Kiwanis Club, ODONR, Al’s Pizza in Fort Loramie, Molly’s Drive Thru, Spillway Bait & Tackle, Russ Michaels, Wagner IGA, Greenthumb Nursery, Playtex, Striker Bow in Minster, Dan Eilerman Construction LLC, Patrick’s Bar & Grill and Mike Meyer.

Jennifer Bruns, Executive Director for Big Brothers Big Sisters stated, “The Shelby County Bassmasters do an outstanding job every year with this activity. The children who participate in this outing truly look forward to it each year, and it exposes them to a new hobby that they might not otherwise get the opportunity to do. I have kids ask me all year round when the fishing derby is going to be held. The LOVE this event.” Bruns stated, “Being outdoors, getting fresh air, and learning about fishing is a neat experience for the children in the program and for some of them the first time they have been exposed to the sport.”

Group activities are part of the mentoring program for children from at-risk homes. Presently, the Shelby & Darke County agency has 65 matches with a list of over 30 children yet in need of an adult volunteer. Volunteers are required to see the children two times per month, offering support and fun, educational activities. It should be noted that match activities can be scheduled around a volunteer’s calendar, and offer a fantastic way to have a positive impact on youth in our community.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Shelby & Darke County is a non-profit, United Way member agency. We are always looking for additional volunteers. If you would like more information on enrolling your child in the program or becoming an active volunteer, please call 937-492-7611 or 937-547-9622. Museum to host October 31st “Last Monday” with a trip to the Movies

No comments:
Remember the thrill of going to the movies in your youth. While my generation missed the golden age of film, I do remember as a child, what a treat it was to go to the movies. We hope it will be a treat for you too!

For our “Last Monday” of October, we are traveling back in time to October/November 1938. We are going to the movies! (Well maybe we should say we are going to recreate the movies). Settle down in your seat and let the lights dim. You are now being transported to the Versailles Movie Palace of old.

From a short reflection of the local Versailles Area autumn news in 1938 to an actual newsreel played in local theaters in 1938. This will be followed by a cartoon and then your feature film. The movie choices are two 1938 Academy Award Winning classics which you will vote for as you arrive. The choices are “You Can’t Take it with You” or “Robin Hood”. Both great movies and a tough choice for the audience!

Now we can’t go to the movies without a stop at the Concession Stand. It will be stocked with delicious old style soda, pop corn, and candies for your enjoyment, all complimentary, but of course we will be happy to take your donations!

The party starts at 1:00 on the dot. Stay as long as you can and forget the Halloween haunts and travel back with us for a treat to a wonderful age we don’t want to forget!

A WONDERFUL AND SPECIAL DONATION MADE BY DANIELLE FRANCIS ON HER BIRTHDAY

No comments:
Pictured are Danielle and Debbie with their donation.
GREENVILLE - Danielle Francis made a selfless donation to the Darke County Animal Shelter.

Danielle turned 10 years old and wanted to help the animals at the Animal Shelter. She decided, instead of birthday presents for herself; why not help the dogs and cats at the Shelter. She told her
family and friends she wanted dog and cat food, dog and cat treats, and toys so she could help the 4 legged animals at the Shelter. Danielle and her Mom Debbie came to the Shelter and donated bags
and bags of dog and cat food. The Shelter staff was very surprised and grateful when they walked in.

The four legged friends at the Shelter were very happy also. The Darke County Animal Shelter and the Friends of the Darke County Animal Shelter want to thank Danielle, her family and friends for thinking of our 4 legged friends. This was a wonderful gift from Danielle and is a true example of her character and upbringing.

After 54 years, Arcade Express Will Not Return to the Great Darke County Fair

No comments:
Greenville OH: After 54 years, a historic Great Darke County Fair vendor has decided to not return to Greenville.

In 1963, Melvin Moore from Lancaster OH first brought the Arcade Express to the Great Darke County Fair. Melvin operated the arcade until his son, Jon Moore, took over the business in 1970. John’s daughter Holly and her husband Mike Williams became the owners in 1997 and have continued the tradition by returning to Greenville for the annual event that always begins the 3rd Friday in August.

It was a very emotional decision and Holly spoke with her 93 year old grandfather before she and husband Mike confirmed they would not return. Holly’s father, Jon passed away in 2009.

Holly stated it was strictly a business decision only. Holly and Mike reassure everyone that they are not going out of business, they are just minimizing their travel distances and overnight setups and teardowns. The entire Moore and Williams families wish to extend a since thank you to everyone that has played and enjoyed the arcade these past 54 years.

“I can't think of a better way to celebrate Halloween weekend than by taking a fun, spooky, and informative walk through downtown Greenville,” said DCCA Executive Director Andrea Jordan. “The stories can give you the chills, but are not too scary for children old enough to enjoy a long walk in the dark,” Ms. Jordan continued. The stories told during the Ghost Walk are based on tales collected by Arcanum-area resident Rita Arnold who has published several volumes recounting spooky happenings within Darke County and beyond.

Ms. Jordan also reminds potential Ghost Walk participants that some tour sites include uneven terrain and may be located in dimly lighted areas. As in years past, Ghost Walk will be held regardless of weather conditions; if seriously inclement weather occurs, the stories will be told indoors.

Tickets for Ghost Walk cost $10, and are available at Greenville Public Library as well as at Ann's Gifts, Readmore's Hallmark, and Darke County Visitors Bureau Welcome Center in downtown Greenville; tickets will also be sold at the door. anxiety and helps boost mood.
Darke County Parks is hosting a series of fitness programs called Naturally Fit occurring the fourth Monday of every month. Everyone wants to lead healthier lives and spend more time outdoors. However, workout machines aren’t always environmentally friendly, and gyms aren’t very exciting. Besides, sometimes life just gets in the way! Use these programs as an “excuse” to schedule time outside and get moving. Each of these programs focuses more on fitness than nature, with everyone moving at their own pace, whether that’s one loop or ten. The October program will take place October 24th at 4:30pm at Shawnee Prairie Preserve which has more than two miles of trails through woods and mature prairies. The park is located on State Route 502 West just outside of Greenville. Meet there, and don’t forget to bring a water bottle.

Greenville, Ohio – Wayne HealthCare was awarded accreditation from the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP), an independent, accreditation organization recognized by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). It earned this distinction after the HFAP conducted an extensive and objective review of the quality and safety Standards of Wayne HealthCare.

“Wayne HealthCare clearly demonstrates a commitment to quality patient care,” said Lawrence Haspel, DO Chairman of the Bureau of Healthcare Facilities Accreditation for the HFAP. “We base our decision on federal standards, as well as recognized national standards for patient safety, quality improvement, and environmental safety. Wayne HealthCare met or exceeded the standards in every case.”

“We’re proud to achieve this prestigious distinction,” said Wayne Deschambeau, CEO and President of Wayne HealthCare. “The awarding of the HFAP accreditation is a significant achievement that recognizes our commitment to providing outstanding care to our patients and our community. In fact, quality is consistently the priority focus in our strategic plans and goals.”

ENGAGE DISCIPLESHIP SUMMIT FEATURING WOUNDS THAT HEAL

No comments:

God is not distant or aloof. On the contrary, through the ministry of Jesus, God enters our painful situations to bring healing and redemption. Balancing sound biblical exposition with sensitive pastoral care, Dr. Stephen Seamands, author of the book Wounds That Heal, examines the profound implications of Jesus' crucifixion for our healing and restoration. Because Jesus experienced abuse, shame and rejection, he understands the hurts we experience today. And his response to pain and suffering gives us hope that we too can experience forgiveness and new life. Filled with real-life stories of people’s brokenness and healing, Wounds That Heal offers comfort for our wounded souls. Ultimately, we take heart that God not only understands our pain but has done something about it. Encounter here the promise that the wounds of Jesus are wounds that heal.

Dr. Seamands is presenting a workshop based on this book that demonstrates how God enters our lives through Jesus' crucifixion---and brings healing and redemption. This workshop is an event in EUM's Engage Discipleship Summit, a discipleship ministry of the church. It will take place at EUM Church, 1451 Sater Street, Greenville, Ohio on Saturday, October 29 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The cost is $20 per person. For more information or to register for this workshop, visit www.eumchurch.org/event/wounds-that-heal-workshop.

Dr. Stephen Seamands currently serves as professor of Christian Doctrine at Asbury Theological Seminary. Prior to assuming a teaching position at the seminary in 1983, he pastored United Methodist churches in Linwood, Florence, and Elmer in southern New Jersey for eleven years. Steve is known for gracefully merging the classical and the practical. His courses on theology and doctrine are taught with a scholar’s mind and a pastor’s heart.

The son of missionary parents, Steve was born and grew up in India. In addition to teaching and working with seminary students, Steve is actively engaged in leading seminars and retreats and conducting spiritual renewal events in local churches across the U.S. He also has a deep concern for the spiritual needs of pastors and Christian leaders.

Steve has developed a particular interest in the areas of emotional healing, spiritual warfare, and intercessory prayer. His workshops, “The Healing Power of Forgiveness,” and “Overcoming Barriers to Receiving God’s Love,” which he has presented at scores of churches and conferences, have ministered deeply to the brokenness in people’s lives.

Jeff Harper is Lead Pastor at EUM Church. The contemporary worship services are Saturday at 6:30 pm and Sunday at 9:00, 10:30, and 11:59 am at the Worship Center located at 1451 Sater Street and a traditional worship service is Sunday 9:45 am at the Downtown Campus at 111 Devor Street in Greenville. Kidmunity Children’s Ministry is available for kids age birth through grade six at the 6:30 pm, 9:00, 10:30 and 11:59 am services. The Downtown Campus, 111 Devor Street, houses the offices.
