Happy Opening Day!

Today is a day that may as well be a regional holiday! Even though it feels like January, the calendar says Spring, and that, Darke Journalians, means baseball!

Anyone want to be brave enough to leave any bold predictions in the comments below?

How many will the Reds win?
How many saves will Cordero compile before he blows one and fandom demands he be replaced?
Can Jay Bruce have a full season like he ended in 2010?
Can Jonny Gomes have a full season like the way he started 2010?
Will I run out of questions to ask?

No comments:
After an offensive explosion in the season opener, Greenville only managed a 3rd inning hit by Junior OF Ryan Augsberger in route to a 2-0 loss to Wapakoneta. Senior pitcher Matt Orth ran into trouble in the first inning, allowing two early singles before the opposing pitcher doubled with 2 outs to plate both runs for the Redskins. Following the double, the remaining 16 Redskins were retired with 9 of them being sent down on strikes.

Greenville's only baserunners came on Augsberger's single in the 3rd and a walk by Senior OF Jason Howard in the 4th, however both attempts at a rally were erased quickly with a strikeout on the first and a double play on the second.

Diabetes Day set for April 9th

No comments:
Type 2 Diabetes is a disease in which your pancreas does not make any or enough insulin, or your body prevents the insulin you produce from working correctly. Insulin is necessary for your body to use glucose, from the food we eat, for energy. High levels of glucose caused by uncontrolled blood sugar can damage eyes, heart, kidneys, nerves, legs, and feet.
As a diabetic, you need to take a positive approach by making changes to help manage your blood glucose. One way to learn about changes you can make to maintain or improve your blood glucose is by attending Diabetic Day.
Diabetes Day will be offered at Wayne HealthCare on Saturday, April 9, 2011. The program will take place from 8:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Speakers will discuss topics of interest to individuals with diabetes. Along with speakers, there will be numerous displays by companies serving the diabetes community.

Greenville Varsity and JV Baseball Teams Begin Season With Wins Over Marion Local

No comments:
Varsity

The Green Wave varsity baseball team played truer to midseason form than for a season opener; receiving a strong pitching performance from Junior Tyler Zimmerman, strong days at the plate by Juniors Zach Weaver and Ryan Miller and a defense that only committed an error on the last play of the game that led to the final out.

The offensive highlights occurred early and often for the Wave, beginning with a sacrifice fly from Weaver to plate the inaugural run in the bottom of the first. In the 2nd, Miller led off the inning with a walk and managed to score from second base on a 2-out single by Junior SS Jon Edwards. The Wave the made the score 4-0 on Miller's first single of the game in the 3rd before the Flyers started to make things interesting.

In the top of the 4th Zimmerman experienced his first rough patch of the day that began with a leadoff double by the Marion Local third baseman. After a strikeout and a walk, the next two batters singled to cut the scoring deficit in half. In the 5th, Zimmerman was struck in the throwing elbow by a line drive that ended his day and would lead to Marion Local's 3rd run, but it was as close as they would get.

Answering the Flyer's rally Greenville scored 7 times over the final 2 innings, receiving big hits from Senior's Robbie Detling, Jason Howard and Matt Orth as well as Miller and Weaver. Marion Local managed to put together 3 runs in the top of the 7th before the final out occurred at the plate on a great defensive play by Miller.

Greenville will head to Wapakoneta on Tuesday night to play the Redskins at 5:00.

JV

The Greenville JV baseball team showed up ready to hit monday afternoon in their season opener, run ruling the Marion Local Flyers 15-3 in five innings.  Karlin Ross picked up the win for the Wave pitching 5 and a third before giving way to freshman Ian Cook who recorded the final two outs.  The Wave JV play at home today against Wapak, first pitch @ 5PM

Box score and stats for the Varsity game are available after the break.

Health Maintenance with Diabetes

No comments:
As a diabetic there are several tests that you should have done each year to monitor and reduce your risk for complications. Are your “A, B, C’s” of diabetes within normal range?

A= A1C level which shows your average blood sugar for the last two to three months. B= Blood pressure. C= Cholesterol. If you’re A1C, blood pressure, and cholesterol are within range you reduce your risk for complications such as heart, eye, and kidney problems. As a diabetic, you are at greater risk of having a stroke or heart attack.

You also want to have a comprehensive foot exam each year to monitor for any foot problems. Blood work will help to monitor your lipid levels and also how your kidneys are functioning.
A dilated eye exam will help determine if you are having any problems with your eyes. Dilating the eyes allows your doctor to look into the back of the eye to view any problems that may be occurring.
You do not want to forget about having a dental exam. As a diabetic, you are at greater risk for cavities and gum disease.

To learn more about ways to live a healthy life with diabetes, attend group classes at Wayne HealthCare. The classes are provided as a series of four classes that will meet on April 4, 11, 18, and 26, 2011 from 1-3 p.m. The cost to attend is $10 per class. Call 937-547-5750 to register for class.

Getting Your Garden in Shape for the Season

No comments:
It’s sure been a wet spring this year. Our state climatologist, Jim Noel, told us on a conference call last week that April this year will have about normal precipitation followed by a dry May. With those conditions we will hopefully get away from some of the diseases that have been plaguing our gardens the past few years. This past weekend I was back home in Milan at a friend’s house and his mother wondered how to get their garden ready for the season. I figured I’d share some of the tips I passed along.

Larry Ullery wins the bracket challenge

No comments:
There are still three games left in the NCAA tournament, but the DJ Brackets contest is over. Larry Ullery beat the field of 26 players by picking 38 correct games out of 60, and scoring 65 overall points. Larry was one of only four players to pick any of the final four teams (all four picked Connecticut to get to the Final Four but then lose in the semi-final). Some guy who called himself "Jalapeno-on-a-Steck" finished dead last and should be humiliated.

Mystery Solved!

No comments:
Darke County Civic Theatre presented yet another successful murder mystery dinner theatre at Montage Cafe earlier this month. Both performances were once again sold out and there were not only familiar faces in both the cast and the audience, but many newcomers as well. The detective work of the audience proved once again that .... no one gets away with murder! Of course, Civic Theatre must thank Aaron and Michele Cox and the Montage staff for their support of the arts and the audience for their participation. The dinner was delicious, the talent was amazing, and the merriment was off the charts.

Civic Theatre is now working on their next production, which will of course be the melodrama at Annie Oakley Days and audition dates and times will soon be announced. Another production that is in the early stages of production is a children's show, which will also be performed at Montage Cafe. Keep an eye on the site for audition dates, because this could be your chance to shine! As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact Dane Leeper, Civic Theatre President, at 937-337-2265 or e-mail at civictheatre@embarqmail.com. The Darke County Civic Theatre is a non-profit organization.

The Dayton Silverbacks support Anti Bullying Rally

No comments:
The Dayton Silverbacks fully back and support the efforts done by David Reed and Wolf Country 101 and everyone else involved with the Anti Bullying Rally that took place at the Darke County Court House. Due to some distance and directions confusion some players were not able to make it out to the event on time. The Dayton Silverbacks organization apologizes for this but would like everyone to know that they are in full support of the Anti Bullying Movement.

Part of the Silverbacks' Mission Statement is to 'build relationships with fans and in the community' and our vision is to 'serve as an asset to the community.' We believe that positive events such as this are exactly what a community needs and that we are instrumental in making them a success. We are disappointed that we could not help out as much as we would have liked to but hope that we can be a positive reinforcement in the future.

Chiropractor attains Fellowship status

No comments:
St. Henry – Scott McClure, DC of St. Henry Chiropractic has attained Fellowship status with the International Academy of Medical Acupuncture. (IAMA) is an institute of higher learning dedicated to teaching physicians of all disciplines both the ancient as well as contemporary principles of acupuncture.

Acupuncture has its roots deeply planted in China. The science is between 5,000 and 7,000 years old. Acupuncture did not become known on a national level in the US until 1971 when diplomatic relations between China and the US were relaxed.

The human body’s energy flow courses over twelve meridians or channels that are normally well balanced. If a disruption of energy flow exists, it can alter the entire system, producing pain or symptoms in the body. Acupuncture’s goal is to restore normalcy to the body’s energy balance by using a combination of acupoints located on the twelve meridians. This is accomplished by a variety of means, the needle being just one.

Dr. McClure has been practicing chiropractic in St. Henry for 17 years. He offers gentle full spine adjusting and physiotherapy, with emphasis on whole body health and wellness. He treats newborns to seniors, and offers a student discount. You can schedule an appointment by calling 419-678-4873.

Commissioners Corner

No comments:
The month of March is finally here, and with that comes the hope of spring. It seems to all of us in the Commissioners office that this has been an “old fashioned winter”. Hopefully by now, things are warming up for all of us. This has been a very busy month in the Commissioners office. The month started with Mike Rhoades and Mike Stegall attending the annual County Commissioners Association of Ohio (CCAO) meeting. This meeting was very informative and we are proud to report that all recommendations the speakers made to improve government, we are already doing, and have been doing for some time! One other area that all Darke Countians should be proud of is how lucky we are to have such good people working for the County. We heard some real horror stories out there from other Counties, and it made us feel very fortunate to have the quality of character we have here. Tell your elected officials how much you appreciate their efforts, everybody needs to hear that once in a while, and believe us, it is warranted because of the quality of our people.

We are busy with numerous issues of concern for the County, among them, the airport, new businesses, the budget, and wind energy. The County Commissioners are on the Dayton Development Coalitions (DDC) U.A.V.(unmanned aerial vehicle) Board. This Board is studying the use of UAV’S for commercial as well as military use. We recently met with Mr. Bert Cream who is involved with Wright State and Wright Patterson Air Force Base. This could be a potential boon for Darke County, and we are staying on top of the situation. One of our more enjoyable meetings was with Mr. Dave Butts of Continental Carbonics Corporation. Mr. Butts is the Vice President of Business Development, and he informed us of the products and progress of the new dry ice plant located in the Greenville Industrial Park. Mr. Butts informed us they hope to be up and running by June 1st with as many as 75 jobs for the County. He also stated that he was very happy with the help and cooperation they have received here. We will continue to improve our process to make businesses more willing to stay, and to re-locate here. Thanks to Mike Bowers and Marc Saluk for their work on this major project for all of us. We are still working on wind energy in the northern part of the county. Invenergy, the company that approached us with the idea of a wind farm in the County, is keeping us apprised of their progress. As of now they seem to be on schedule for the project. We will keep you informed as we get more information that we can share. By now, the State budget has been released and it is fairly close to what we were expecting. The Commissioners had made plans for deep cuts in our states revenue, and have already adjusted accordingly. We had budgeted for less money from the state so what little monies we will get will be considered a bonus. With the continued help of our Elected Officials and our efforts to live within our means in this economic climate, Darke County will weather the economic storm, and become stronger in the future.

We certainly enjoy hearing from people in the county, and will try to answer all questions accordingly in a timely manner. Our meetings are open to the public, and everyone is invited. We meet every Monday and Wednesday at 1:30 P.M. in the Commissioners office located at 520 South Broadway, south of the courthouse, in Greenville. Hope to see you there!!

Reflecting on Public Forums, by Jim Buchy

2 comments:
Recently, I held three public forums, one in each county of the district. I was pleased by the willingness of nearly 450 constituents to discuss the issue of Senate Bill 5 and other bills, both for and against. Throughout this process I have been open with my support for this measure and will continue to explain what has led me to this position. The bill is currently in the amendment phase in the House and the ideas of constituents in this district have been relayed to my colleagues working on the bill.

The first event was at the St. Clair Memorial Hall where I was joined by Senator Faber, the local Greenville Education Association and other kind volunteers that allowed the event to take place without problems. At that event constituents were most concerned about dispute resolution provisions and administrator accountability. At that event we heard from many good people and it set the stage for success at the two latter events. The Coldwater event was met with an increased amount of displeasure most of which was fueled by residents of neighboring districts. The Coldwater event was hosted at the Coldwater American Legion by the Mercer County Liberty Group. The audience was comprised of interested constituents in favor and opposition to SB 5. In Coldwater it was evident that the existing provisions of step schedules and collective bargaining are not working for schools in my district. The constant pressure of national and state labor unions to ask for more from our tax payers is not popular amongst local public employees. The public employees of my district just want to be treated fairly and I am carrying that message to Columbus. The right of employees to organize is important and they should bargain for wages, hours, terms and conditions. However, we need increased accountability for administrators. At the final event in Eaton I was met by protestors in the rain. I invited them inside for the event and many came in. This event was held in the Eaton High School gymnasium. The discussion was lively and many people in the crowd reiterated they were interested in hearing what was happening in Columbus. I am dedicated to communicating with constituents by face to face meetings, phone calls, letters, emails and through columns such as this. I will continue to make every effort to hear the concerns of those who came to the forums or could not make it. If you are concerned about the reasons SB 5 is needed in Ohio or you have suggestions to improve the bill I want to hear them.

Soon, there will be changes offered-up to SB 5 in the House and I look forward to examining those changes. Currently, SB 5 will allow for public employees to collectively bargain for wages, hours, terms and conditions. It will remove step pay increases for all public employees and replace those pay increases by a locally determined merit system, except for teachers who will be paid based on a locally determined performance system. Public employees will continue to have leave time and will be asked to pay a percentage of their healthcare costs. We have viewed the Governor’s budget proposal and it is evident the local entities and state government need tools to manage labor costs. We cannot and will not balance this budget on the backs of the middle class. This bill and others will ask administrators to make wise decisions and cut costs universally. I consider these changes an important part of putting Ohio back on her feet and I hope you will too.

Currants, by Abraham Lincoln

No comments:
When I was a little boy, still in bib overalls, I used to wander over to see Esta Flory, then an old woman whose old man never made his own smokes—Esta rolled them every morning—about breakfast time. I went to the side kitchen door past the row of currant bushes and when they were ripe there were dozens on bushes riper than this that I snatched off, crammed in my mouth, and peeked in through the screen door like an orphan to see if I was invited for breakfast. Sometimes I got to eat twice—first at home—second at Esta's house; plus the currants.

Life was simple in those days. A kid could dip both hands in the wash basin to get cleaned up. Rubbing wet fingers over both eyes and across front teeth was good to do. No soap was required and there wasn’t anything to dry. My hair flopped like it fell last week when mother washed it with the bar of Ivory soap and poured bath water out of the galvanized tub to rinse it. It was there until she washed it next week.

Canner Gauge Testing Time (Extension News Release)

No comments:
Planning to do some canning this year to take advantage of your garden produce? That means it's time to get your home canning equipment in working order. OSU Extension, Darke County, will check dial type pressure canner gauges beginning on May 9, 2011.

There is a $5.00 charge for each gauge tested. You will need to bring in your dial gauge to our office and we will test it, or call you to pick it up after it has been tested. In addition, you will receive the most recent materials available on home food preservation.

Please bring your canner lid with the gauge attached to be tested. We will also check the gasket on your canner to make sure that, too, is in working order.

OSU Extension, Darke County, is located at 603 Wagner Avenue, Greenville, on the north side of Edison State Community College. If you have any questions, please call 937-548-5215.

Before your produce is ready to preserve, be certain that you check the jars you plan to use. Inspect them for cracks. Run your finger around the rim of each jar to inspect for chips, nicks and bumps in the glass. Any irregularities can cause seals to fail, so discard jars that don't meet the standard for canning, or use them for decorative or other purposes.

Also, mayonnaise jars, or similar commercial food jars, are considered "one-trip" jars. These jars are not thick enough to withstand the repeated use in home canning. So make sure your jar supply is ready for the task, as well as the rest of your canning equipment.

Remember, pressure canning is the only safe method of canning low acid vegetables, meats, poultry and seafood. The 240 degree temperature required to preserve these foods safely can only be reached in a pressure canner.

Canning is not the place for creativity. Use only scientifically tested recipes, instructions and recommendations for home preserving foods. Home food preservation is easy and safe, but only if you follow safe guidelines for each particular food you are canning. Freezing is a safe method to preserve any food, so when in doubt, freeze it.

RIDERS IN THE SKY RETURN TO GREENVILLE

No comments:
Darke County Center for the Arts will present Riders In the Sky at Henry St. Clair Memorial Hall on Saturday, April 9 at 8 p.m. Dubbed “America’s Favorite Cowboys,” the quartet sings Western favorites and spews Western wit as they promote the virtues of “The Cowboy Way.”

DCCA officials say that past performances by Riders In the Sky have been extremely popular, stimulating a multitude of requests for this return engagement.

According to DCCA Artistic Director Keith Rawlins, Riders in the Sky attract fans of all ages. “They are the keepers of the flame passed on by the Sons of the Pioneers, Gene Autry, and Roy Rogers, earning generations of fans for their warm harmonies and excellent musicianship as well as their unique wacky humor,” Rawlins said. “But they gained attention from a whole new generation when they started working with Pixar. Their album of music from Toy Story won the group their first Grammy; their Monsters Inc. album earned a second Grammy,” explained Rawlins.

The Riders In the Sky concert is sponsored by Coppock-Hole Trust and Greenville National Bank. DCCA also receives funding from Harry D. and Esther Stephens Memorial, Lydia E. Schaurer Memorial Trust Fund, and Ketrow Foundation. In addition, the Ohio Arts Council helps fund Darke County Center for the Arts with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence, and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.

Tickets for the Riders In the Sky performance are $20, and can be reserved by contacting DCCA at 937-547-0908 or dcca@centerforarts.net. If any remain by showtime, tickets will also be available at the door.

YORK VISITS WITH LOCAL LEGISLATORS IN SUPPORT OF TOURISM

No comments:
York is pictured with Rep. Dick Adams who represents
the 79th House District, including Miami County and
portions of Darke County.
COLUMBUS – Executive Director, Deanna York with the Darke County Visitors Bureau joined fellow members of Ohio Association of Convention and Visitors Bureaus (OACVB), Ohio Travel Association (OTA) and Ohio Hotel Lodging Association (OHLA) as they visited State Legislators on Wednesday, March 16 to emphasize the importance of tourism. York was one of approximately 100 tourism leaders to visit State Senators and Representatives in Columbus. She visited with Rep. Dick Adams, Rep. Jim Buchy and Joe Otte, legislative aide to Keith Faber.

“It was a privilege to meet with our state leaders and share with them what tourism means to Darke County, as well as the entire state,” shared York. “We discussed the local jobs created by tourism as well as the how the Darke County Visitors Bureau and other visitor bureaus use the lodging tax to encourage visitors to come to our community to shop, play and stay.”

According to Longwood International, for every tourism advertising dollar spent on promoting tourism in Ohio, there is a $13 return. That return on investment is what can help generate the dollars needed to feed the state budget and create more jobs. Phil Craig, executive director of the OACVB states, “Jobs are the most important issue facing Ohio today. By using the local lodging tax to market our communities we are creating and retaining jobs right here in our communities.”

Tourism accounts for 437,000 jobs in Ohio as visitors spend $36 billion in Ohio with a $2.5 billion revenue impact for state and local governments. In Darke County, the tourism industry sustained more than 1,426 local jobs, contributes more than $7.7 million in local taxes and generated $57.6 million in sales for local businesses.

Darke County Parks Holds “Searching for Sallies” Program

No comments:
It was a very sunny afternoon when the Darke County Parks held their “Searching for Sallies” program. The van was packed full and the group headed out to Drew Woods State Nature preserve to see what they could find. Although no salamanders were found, we did find evidence of their being in the area in the form of a mass of Eastern Tiger Salamander eggs. These were found in a vernal pool within the woods. “Salamanders are shy creatures and finding them can sometimes be a chore” Naturalist Robb Clifford told the group, “but the egg masses prove they are here, we just missed them!”

In addition to signs of “Sallies”, the group witnessed other signs of spring. Upon entering the woods, an American Woodcock was spotted. Along the vernal pools, spring peepers and cricket frogs were heard calling. The group stopped to examine many types of fungi found throughout the area. Perhaps the most exciting sign of spring’s arrival were the Spring Beauties popping up through the soil, though not yet blooming. The group had a great time exploring this special old-growth forest on a beautiful spring afternoon!

Drew Woods State Nature Preserve is thought to be one of the few Old-growth forests still left in this region. Owned by the state, it is managed by Darke County Park District. Entry into this woodlot is by permit only as there are many delicate species found here.

Check out the Nature Notes or visit the website: www.darkecountyparks.org to see what other programs are offered this spring. We hope to see you out enjoying your Darke County Parks.

Cancer Association of Darke County Seeks Volunteers

No comments:
Spring is a great time to take a drive and enjoy the scenery.  Why not take in the view while lending a hand, or a set of wheels, to local cancer patients?

Cancer Association of Darke County needs volunteers to drive clients to medical appointments in Dayton, Troy, Celina, Richmond, Columbus and Indianapolis.  Visit with patients while transporting them to doctor’s appointments, treatments and testing.  This position, available to volunteers who are at least 18 years of age, is available weekdays.  Volunteers will need to provide information for the organization’s insurance provider.  Due to the sensitive nature of some patients’ medical conditions, drivers may not smoke while transporting patients or use a vehicle that has previously been smoked in.

The volunteer driver position is extremely beneficial to both our organization and to our clients. Patients call the organization and request that a driver give them a ride to their appointment and back home. The position is extremely rewarding because without these drivers our patients would not be able to receive essential treatments, check-ups, and medicines to aid them in their fight against cancer.

Amazing Talent Auditioned!

No comments:
The Directors of Versailles’ Towne & Country Player’s upcoming production of the Tony Award musical, “The Secret Garden” were thrilled by the amazing turnout of potential players for this year’s inaugural production. The wonderful classic children’s tale, which turns into an awaking with-in for all to partake, will be performed at the new Versailles Performing Arts Center.

Those auditioning came from the Versailles community, as well as nearly all of “MAC land”, including Coldwater, Ft. Recovery, St. Henry, New Bremen, and Minster were all represented as well as Greenville, Englewood, and Troy.

Towne & Country Player’s has developed a reputation as a fine community theatre organization, from representing the United States in 1991 at the Edinburgh International Theatre Festival Fringe to representing the area at numerous Ohio Community Theatre Association (OCTA) events. From providing fine comedies, dramas, and musicals to the Versailles area and west central Ohio for nearly forty years, this new chapter promises to be an exciting one.

Musical Director, David Berger, praised the high caliber of musicians who auditioned. Director, Jim Kelch stated that in his thirty five years of directing, it was the finest audition cast ever!

While those selected will not be released until later next week, it is sure to move this community theatre toward its goal, of being recognized as a regional theatre destination. This year’s production dates for “The Secret Garden” will be tentatively June 23, 24, 25, at 7:30 p.m. and June 26, at 2:00 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets will go on sale May 15th through Darke County Center for the Arts (DCCA) and at various locations. Watch local papers for further information.

Congratulations to the Franklin-Monroe boys on a great season

The F-M boys gave it a great shot Friday night but came up short to in the regional finals to Houston. F-M finished the season in the final eight in the state, lost only two games all year, and gave the fans a lot to cheer for. Great job boys!

MAID-RITE SANDWICH SHOPPE GIVES FOR KIDS

No comments:
Darke County Center for the Arts thanks Maid-Rite Sandwich Shoppe for contributing funds to support Arts In Education, a program through which DCCA partners with all public schools in Darke County and annually takes performing artists to every grade of all eight schools.

Leland Faulkner’s World of Wonder, presented to students in grades 4 through 6 the week of March 7, was the final program in the 2010/2011 season. Other programs this year included singer and actress Lyle Cogen helping children in grades K-3 meet the challenges of bullying, along with author and poet Allan Wolf taking his program Got Rhyme to our area high schools. Concert pianist Alpin Hong was to have performed for junior high school students the week of the ice storm in February, DCCA is hopeful that he will be able to return in May with Movies to Games, Classically Trained.

Most Arts In Education performers spend a week in Greenville traveling to all Greenville City and Darke County public schools, with the exception of the Jr. High program, which generally performs at St. Clair Memorial Hall with students being bused in. According to Julie Strait, DCCA Executive Director, “During the Artist’s residencies we point out local landmarks to visit, with Maid-Rite Sandwich Shoppe being a ‘must’ to truly experience the treasures we have in Darke County. And when we announce the list of sponsors from the stage prior to each show, Maid-Rite inevitably gets the biggest reaction from students. DCCA is grateful for the powerful message that Maid-Rite sends to the students in our community, reinforcing the message that the Arts are an important part of their education,” she concluded.

Photo Club Names New Officers

No comments:
On March 15, 2011, the Darke County Photography Club held their Annual Membership Meeting at Shawnee Prairie Nature Center. The new officers for the 2011 – 2012 year are as follows: President, John Snell; Vice-President, Mel Cabeen; Secretary/Treasurer, Jeannie Grosch; and Media Rep, Sue Ann Hartzell. Discussions included ways to keep the club’s website, Flickr group, and Facebook page up-to-date, potential fundraisers, and offering basket to be raffled at Prairie Days. The monthly feedback session theme was Abstract: Spots, Curves, and Circles. We had many creative interpretations of the theme from our club members with plenty of discussion of each photograph.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at 7:00PM at the Shawnee Prairie Nature Center. We will be holding one of our quarterly competitions, with guest judge/critiquer John Beals from Ridgeville, Indiana. The theme for April is Windows/Glass. Each member can enter 2 photographs in the theme category and 1 photograph in the open class during this meeting.

The Darke County Photography club is open to anyone from students to adults interested in learning about photography in any of its forms. If you enjoy taking pictures and making new friends, give us a try. Come to a meeting on the third Tuesday of each month at Shawnee Prairie Nature Center, State Route 502, Greenville, Ohio, at 7:00PM. New Madison Library Levy Presentations

No comments:
The trustees of New Madison Public Library recently voted to put a 1.5 mill library support levy on the May 3 ballot. The library’s state funding has decreased by 24% in the past five years and additional cuts are expected mid-year in 2011. The trustees have eliminated staff positions, cut the book budget, eliminated Wednesday service hours and postponed capital improvements. But these cost saving measures are not enough to make ends meet when the demand for library service has increased by 23% in the same time period. In trying economic times, community residents turn more and more to libraries to provide free educational and recreational resources as well as services like free high-speed internet access and assistance with applying for government benefits. The income generated by the levy will allow the library to restore service hours, programming and the book budget and to address needed capital improvements. The levy will be on the ballot for voters living in the library’s legal service district which includes the villages of Hollansburg, New Madison and Palestine and the rural areas within the boundaries of the Tri-Village School District.

Members of the library’s “levy team” will make appearances at the following public meetings. Questions and comments can be shared at any of these meetings or by contacting library director Ann Riegle-Coursey at 996-1741 or Citizens for New Madison Public Library treasurer Phil Dubbs at 996-5282.

  • Monday, March 21- Liberty Township meeting at 7 p.m.
