DarkeJournal endorsement: vote for John Kasich

The Ohio Constitution requires our lawmakers to pass a balanced budget every two years. When this was last done in 2009, projected revenues were far short of existing liabilities. Our state needed a leader who was willing to be courageous and make some bold decisions. Unfortunately our leader was Ted Strickland.

Rather than make the difficult decisions necessary to bridge the shortfall (and risk alienating certain voters before an election), Strickland ducked the problem and left our state with an $8 billion ticking time bomb. Strickland ended up balancing the budget by: 1) accepting one-time stimulus money from Washington, 2) emptying out the state’s $1 billion rainy day fund, and 3) implementing a plan for slot machines after saying he was against gambling.

When Ohio’s budget is completed again in just a few short months, it will be difficult. Whoever’s in charge will have to bridge an $8 billion gap. It will be painful. And much more painful than it had to be, thanks to Ted Strickland.

John Kasich served 18 years in Congress representing a district near Columbus. He gained some notoriety early in his career publicly criticizing the president of his own party (Bush 41) for his deficit budget. Kasich became ranking member of the budget committee in 1993. He began submitting balanced budgets to Congress at a time when it was unheard of, and in opposition to his party’s own proposed budgets. Kasich later became chair of the budget committee, and eventually those balanced budgets were embraced by both parties and passed on a bipartisan basis. Kasich left Congress in 2000 with our federal budget running a surplus. It’s hard to even conceive of a balanced federal budget these days, but this is something John Kasich helped to accomplish just ten years ago.

What Ohio needs more than anything else right now is a courageous leader who can handle our budget and economic issues. When the pressure was on and we needed bold leadership, Ted Strickland ran. By contrast, John Kasich attacked cuts head-on and helped balance the federal budget at a time when the political winds weren’t even pushing for it. We can no longer afford the politics of protecting constituencies and avoiding difficult decisions.

In addition to punting on the 2009 budget, Ted Strickland has managed to occupy the governor’s office for four years without achieving any significant accomplishments. If you don’t believe that statement, just watch his campaign commercials (and those of his outside supporters). Do they speak of Strickland’s accomplishments? No - they attack John Kasich. Having no record to run on, Strickland and his supporters know that it’s too late in the game to gain votes on their own. So they have chosen to try to take votes from John Kasich by smearing him with different groups. Strickland, and in particular his union supporters, are trying to scare seniors. The Strickland team is trying to scare gun owners. More recently, the Strickland team is trying to proliferate the false notion that John Kasich will combine school districts. Millions are being spent just this weekend by outside PACs to continue these smears through election day. The idea behind this strategy is that if enough seniors, gun owners, educators, and others withhold their support for John Kasich, then an otherwise poor incumbent with no accomplishments might just be able to pull it out. This is the worst form of cynical political campaigning. People are sick of this type of politics. Do not reward Ted Strickland for this.

John Kasich is a solid conservative who will reduce the size of government and not raise taxes. His goal is the same as all of ours: for Ohio to return to greatness and be a place where our children can stay and prosper. His focus will be jobs and reducing the regulations that paralyze Ohio businesses (and he will use our guys Zehringer and Faber as his point men on this). Kasich is pro-life, and he is a gun owner who will protect and preserve your second amendment rights. Most importantly, John Kasich will have the courage to confront the difficult problems currently facing Ohio. Vote for John Kasich on Tuesday.

Full size van on fire at 127 and Sebring Warner

Around 1:00 PM on Sunday, Greenville Twp. Fire Dept. was dispatched to the report of a van fire at Sebring Warner and US 127. Upon arrival they found a van pulling a camper fully involved in the north bound lane of US 127 just south of Sebring Warner Rd. In the pictures, GTFD Firefighters work to extinguish the blaze. The white glare is actually smoke which could be seen for a couple. [info from badge1]

What’s Happening at Garst Museum?

Examples of a case full of wonderful tintype early photographs now on display at Garst Museum until November 15. Judging from the clothing most of them are estimated as being Civil War era. Notice the pantaloons on the little girl.

Friday, October 29 volunteers, staff and docents enjoyed a Halloween Luncheon at the Museum. In the photograph at the left is a chance to see “Annie Oakley” of Garst Gala publicity photos fame (Marilyn Robbins). Marilyn is also Membership Chairman and welcomes everyone in the county who wish to become a member of the “museum family”.

This luncheon is given in appreciation of the many volunteers who add to the success of the museum’s programs. Anyone interested in becoming a member or a volunteer please call the museum 548-5250.

American Pride by Elizabeth Horner

Horner has participated in honoring our Veterans since a young age.

Recently, she was given the American flag, WWII Memorabilia and service
medals of Don Nease of Darke County, a WWII Veteran and her Great Uncle,
 to keep and treasure.

I am one of those species who will return to my nest after having an adventure of wherever life takes me. I will always be an American child despite the fact that I am a product of mixed race. I will also remain one of Darke County's daughters. I have this patriotic thing in my veins. However, I have a strong point of view as to what patriotism means to me.

When I was in elementary school, we had a student guest from overseas. This student wanted to go shopping for something to take back to her home country. Guess what? Did she buy something made in America? No, she spent hours, until our feet hurt walking, looking for a watch made from another country!

That bothered me so much then ... but since I'm older, my thoughts are different.
I want "Made in America" to mean something that people wants to buy because it means "quality and you get what you paid for"!

I don't believe in entreating people to do the "patriotic" thing because all it is doing is putting us at a disadvantage. There is so much burgeoning talent in America and right here in Darke County. This country gave birth to airplanes, light bulbs, telephones, bifocals, blue jeans, global positioning system, Adobe Flash, Mars' Rovers, DNA testing, the list goes on, and on.... Give us, the young budding minds, the tools and your mentoring to explore our ingenuities so we may continue to keep "Made in America" respected around the world and a real source of our American pride! We owe it --- to our Veterans!

Historical Keepsake Now Available

The Fort GreeneVille Chapter DAR is proud to announce the arrival of the Cats Meow Studabaker Schoolhouse Keepsake. The keepsake is a replica of the first brick schoolhouse in Darke County built in 1840. The Studabaker schoolhouse is located at the south entrance into the city of Greenville on St Rt 49 S. The schoolhouse is on the National Register of Historical Places and owned by the Fort GreeneVille Chapter.

The Studabaker Schoolhouse keepsake is a nice addition to the Cats Meow Keepsakes collection of other Darke County historical sites available at Anns Gift and Antiques Shop in downtown Greenville.

The Fort GreeneVille Chapter will be celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2012 and would like to kickoff the upcoming celebration by introducing the historical site as a Cats Meow Keepsake.

Trick or Treat fun at the Elks

On Sunday, October 31, the Greenville Elks #1139 will open up their haunted maze to all of the trick or treaters from 2-4 pm. Come to the front doors and come on in for a spooky walk through the maze! The Elks is located in Greenville at 214 W. Third St., one block west of broadway. Red Flag Warning for Darke County until 7:00 PM Saturday

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Darke County until 7:00 PM this evening due to critical fire weather conditions expected this afternoon. Even with the rainfall we received this past week, conditions remain unusually dry.

A reminder, that under Ohio Revised Code 1503.18(c), except under certain circumstances, open burning is prohibited during the months of March, April, May, October and November from 6:00 am – 6:00 pm. Also, it is illegal to burn any trash in the State of Ohio .

During Red Flag situations, fires can quickly become uncontrollable. While no burning is recommended, it is also recommended that citizens refrain from discarding cigarette butts outdoors.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will be occurring shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures will create explosive fire growth potential (National Weather Service).

John Boehner visits Greenville Friday

U.S. Congressman John Boehner visited Greenville on Friday afternoon, October 29 and spoke to Republicans at GOP Headquarters on Broadway. He indicated that should the Congress have significant changes in numbers on November 2 , his intent was to put a rein on government spending and work toward reducing the deficit. He took questions from the audience including several about the jobs situation in Ohio.

Halloween - A Scary Season for Sex Offenders

In Montgomery County sex offenders can expect to be checked on by the US Marshall Service or the Montgomery County Sheriff’s department. This is being done even though the offenders have "paid their debt to society" and the probability of recidivism is supposedly low. Phil Plummer, Montgomery County Sheriff, believes "preventing one tragedy is priceless". US Marshall Bill Taylor believes “the weakest among us” should be the best protected.

Other communities nationwide have put brakes on sex offenders’ behavior by banning them from handing out candy and prohibiting them from Halloween activities. Given their almost vigilante responses to a clear and present danger, the ACLU legal funds will be severely stretched in their attempt to protect sex offenders.

By comparison, the deliberate, considered and measured approach taken by the City of Greenville in response to a problem that has been cast upon them is laudable. Perhaps that explains why Continental Carbonic Products Inc. decided to locate their dry ice production facility with as many as 70 new jobs in Greenville/Darke County.

Lambda Phi Sorority's Annual Holiday Auction - November 3rd

Lambda Phi's annual Holiday Silent Auction will be held on Wednesday, November 3rd, 7 P.M. at The Elks Club in Greenville. The gala evening features quality handmade gifts, a style show by Youniques, refreshments made by members, and a nine-prize raffle. Admission is free. All proceeds go to local charities.

EF1 Tornado Confirmed North of Eldorado in Darke County

The National Weather Service in Wilmington has confirmed an EF1 Tornado touched down in the southern area of Darke County on Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at approximately 11:40 am. The tornado likely touched down initially in Preble County in open farm land north of Eldorado-Whitewater Road where some minor damage occurred. After lifting for a short time it then touched down west of State Route 726 and demolished a barn. It then continued across 726 where it hit a residence on Preble County Butler Twp Road where outbuildings were destroyed with debris covering approximately 300 yards along with significant tree damage. From there the tornado crossed farm fields until glancing another residence along State Route 722 where tree damage and minor outbuilding damage occurred. Several utility poles along 722 were snapped in half. The tornado continued northeast and hit a residence on Emrick Road, breaking windows in the home along with significant outbuilding damage and several large, healthy trees snapped off and uprooted. Additional damage occurred to a residence on Otterbein Ithaca Road with a tree snapped off into a house and a barn partially collapsed.

Estimated wind speeds are a maximum of 90 mph with a path of 30 yards wide and 5.5 miles long. There were no reported injuries from this storm.

For reference the Enhanced Fujita Scale Classifies Tornadoes into the following categories. EF0-WIND SPEEDS 65 TO 85 MPH; EF1-WIND SPEEDS 86 TO 110 MPH; EF2-WIND SPEEDS 111 TO 135 MPH; EF3-WIND SPEEDS 136 TO 165 MPH; EF4-WIND SPEEDS 166 TO 200 MPH; EF5-WIND SPEEDS GREATER THAN 200 MPH.

Ansonia High School Athletic Wall of Fame Committee accepting nominations

The Ansonia High School Athletic Wall of Fame Committee will be accepting nominations for the induction ceremony scheduled for Saturday, February 12, 2011 during halftime of the boy’s home Varsity basketball game against Versailles.

Applications may be picked up at the High School Office during normal school hours. They are also inside the High School winter sports programs. Eligible nominees must have graduated from Ansonia School prior to 2005 and will be selected based upon their high school athletic accomplishments. To be considered for 2011 induction, nomination forms must be returned no later than 130pm on Tuesday, December 21, 2010.

THE RAINBOW FISH OPENS FAMILY THEATRE SERIES

Darke County Center for the Arts will present ArtsPower National Touring Theatre’s production of The Rainbow Fish on Sunday, November 14 at Henry St. Clair Memorial Hall in Greenville. This Family Theatre Series presentation is especially appropriate for youngsters age 4 through 8, but according to DCCA Artistic Director Keith Rawlins the musical will appeal to all ages. The show begins at 2 p.m.

“ArtsPower’s adaptation of Marcus Pfister’s classic children’s book is a joyful celebration of unselfish friendship,” Mr. Rawlins stated. “Adults will be delighted with the clever dialogue and the lilting score, while youngsters will be totally charmed by the beautiful re-telling of one of their favorite stories,” he said. According to Rawlins, the show about the beautiful fish with shimmering scales gently reinforces the value of discovering one’s inner beauty as a path to true happiness.

42nd Annual Bazaar Scheduled

Preparations are underway for the 42nd Annual Bazaar set for November 6, 2010. Brethren Retirement Community Auxiliary is sponsoring the event to be held at 750 Chestnut Street in the Brick Room. Doors will open at 9:30 am and close at 2:00. A homemade soup and sandwich lunch will be served from 10:30 am to 1:00 pm in the Staff Cafeteria.

The Bazaar will highlight baked goods and crafts by auxiliary members from participating Churches of the Brethren. The Auxiliary bakers are busy preparing homemade pies, angel food cakes, candies and other tasty treats. Home-baked apple dumplings and cinnamon rolls will be showcased. Pecan pies by Ron will be available along with mincemeat, gooseberry and other favorites. Items will be ready for use or to freeze for the holidays.

Hot spice cider and frozen cider slushies will tempt your taste buds made with cider from Downing’s Fruit Farm. Crafty members will offer crocheted and knitted Afghans, dishcloths and Christmas crafts ideal for gift giving. Various church cookbooks will be available. Nine craft vendors will be onsite with displays of painted rocks, country crafts, knitted scarves and blankets, wood carved toys and ornaments, Wishing Well Salad Dressings, almonized peanuts, crocheted and loomed rugs, homemade teddy bears, Cindy’s biscotti and mixes and much more. “The Flour Barrell” will feature dried fruits, nuts, candy and various bulk items.

Used books will be offered for sale by Brethren Retirement Community Library to benefit the resident library. They will have a large selection of hard back and paperback books. The fourteen hundred square foot Café and Gifts on Main will be open with Christmas displays abounding. They feature a unique holiday shopping experience.

The public is invited to attend this annual fall event and celebrate with Brethren Retirement Community Auxiliary. Diabetic Foot Care Presentation - November 3rd

In honor of November as National Diabetes Month, the Wayne HealthCare Diabetes Education Department will be presenting a program to help those with diabetes live a healthy life.

Mathew Painting, D.P.M. will be presenting a program on Diabetic Foot Care. Dr. Painting works at the Western Ohio Podiatric Medical Center , along with Robert Maher, D.P.M., David Trimble, D.P.M., and Jennifer Stevens, D.P.M. He will provide a 20 minute presentation followed by a question and answer session. The program will be held on November 3, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Darke County Center for the Arts is pleased to receive a sponsorship donation from Dr. Douglass Gordon DMD, MS of Gordon Orthodontics, located in Greenville and Troy, in support of Family Theater Series. Gordon Orthodontics’ purpose is “To provide specialized and superior orthodontic services to our patients, helping them improve not only their dental health, but their confidence, self esteem and quality of life.”

“DCCA greatly appreciates Dr. Gordon’s commitment to the younger generation in our community; he has an inherent understanding of how important and rewarding the arts are to young people and is truly a genuine individual who wants to help children have confidence in themselves through an improved smile, but also through the benefits derived from participating in the arts,” said Julie Strait. “Dr. Gordon is also a valued board member for Darke County Center for the Arts, helping direct program planning as well as volunteering his time to help out at the shows when possible,” she concluded.

According to Strait, the goal of DCCA’s Family Theatre Series is to inspire the imaginations of the young and young at heart, encouraging the expression of creativity. Performance times are scheduled to fit conveniently into most schedules at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoons. Garst Lecture Series Continues November 7th

On Sunday, November 7, Garst Museum will present the third in a series of lectures open to the public. Featured will be a panel of local veterans discussing their own experiences in military service. These veterans include patriotic servicemen and women from World War 11 to the present time. This is a real, live history lesson !

The event starts at 2:00 p.m. and is free to the public. Jack Harless will be the moderator. The lecture series are sponsored by the HOPE Foundation and Harry Stephens Memorial grants.

Garst Museum’s military exhibit is comprehensive, fascinating, and dedicated to our country’s military history. The 1812 uniform was actually worn almost 200 years ago!

There are uniforms and souvenirs from several wars; local medal winners; nurses uniforms; an Air Force One pilot’s uniform, etc. The exhibit is on the second floor (up the stairs). The museum has long wished for easier access as it’s not an easy a climb for most visitors. On the wish list: an elevator!

Park Board Meeting - November 1st

The Darke County Park District Board of Commissioners will hold a Special Board Meeting on Monday, November 1, 2010 at 5:00 p.m. at the Shawnee Prairie Nature Education Center, 4267 St. Rt. 502 W. Greenville, OH. This meeting will be a work session for trail development and mission statement review.

MAKING SENSE OF TRANSGENICS (Extension News Release)

Sales, sales, sales! It’s that time of year again and producers are searching for a deal and dealers are hoping to provide one. If you listen to the radio, read the paper or other publications, you are being bombarded with advertisements. So what are they really selling you? I can’t give you recommendations on exact products to buy because I represent a non-partisan organization and I haven’t evaluated the products myself. What I can offer over the next few weeks is knowledge on what to look for in a product.

We’re going to start off big with genetics! We have been genetically modifying plants for thousands of years. Plant breeding has advanced from selecting for traits by traditional methods (which we still do) to gene insertion. We can now identify a single gene we want from any organism and insert it into the genome of our favorite plant creating a genetically modified organism (GMO). This was done years ago with the gene for luciferase (an enzyme you find in fireflies) and tobacco creating tobacco that glows in the dark!

DOWNTOWN BANNERS RECEIVE HELP FROM GREENVILLE SCHOOLS

Beginning in the spring of 2009, Main Street Greenville started a Banner Replacement Program. This program allows for a new seasonal banner each year to grace the light poles along Broadway. While last year the generic spring banners were substituted for creative and abstract artwork designed by the Greenville’s 8th grade art class, this year brings change to the worn fall banners. Enlisting the talents of the Greenville Senior High Career Art Class was a genius idea from the Main Street Greenville Design Committee and Superintendent Susie Riegle.

Senior Career Art teacher, Mrs. Cleary, engaged her sixteen-student class in this project at the beginning of the school year. Within two weeks the students critiqued their work and four designs were picked. With the help of local printing company, Express It, the 56 banners were completed just in time to fly in the cool crisp air fall affords. So when traveling through downtown Greenville on your way to school, work, or shopping trip take a look at what welcomes you into the community and evokes pride. Not only do they shout "FALL" they also exude creativity.

“Using our local resources, and at the same time encouraging and cultivating these young artists was a goal for the committee,” states Amber Schmerge, director of Main Street Greenville. “We are very pleased with the results and extend an invitation to the community to help fund this project.” The Fall Banners have received partial funding from Darke Rural Electric Cooperative and Brethren Retirement Community. The committee is accepting donations as reasonable as $40 from individuals and businesses. World War II vet Elton B. Miller passed away Sunday

Elton B. Miller, age 84 of Greenville, Ohio and formerly of Eaton, Ohio passed away at 4:09 P.M. Sunday October 24, 2010 at his residence. Elton was born December 4, 1925 in Gettysburg, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his parents Ray and Ruth (Brewer) Miller who lived in Gettysburg and his 2 day old son Gary Ray Miller also of Gettysburg.

Elton graduated from Gettysburg High School in 1943. He went on to receive both his B.S. in Education and Master’s Degree from Miami University of Oxford, Ohio. While he was at Miami he was honored to be inducted into 3 Honorary Fraternities. His career of 29 years in Public Education included 7 years of classroom teaching and 22 years of administrative assignments. He was a veteran of W.W. II serving in medical administration division of the U.S. Army. His tours of duty took him to India, Burma and the Chinese Theatre. He was also a member of the Greenville Church of the Brethren.

Elton leaves his wife Thelma Jean (Detrick) Miller of Greenville. They were married for 64 years August 15, 2010. He is also survived by his son and daughter in law Wayne and Vana Miller of Blytheville, Ark., and his daughter Kathy Jones of Crossville, Tenn. One grandson Kevin of Mississippi, as well as 2 brothers and sisters in law Gerald and Alta Miller of San Antonio, Texas and Harold and Helen Miller of Alachua, Florida.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Friday October 29, 2010 at the Zechar Bailey Funeral Home Greenville, Ohio with Pastor Todd Reish and Pastor Ralph Detrick co-officiating. Burial will follow in the Harris Creek Cemetery Bradford, Ohio. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6 until 8 P.M. and on Friday 1/2 hour prior to the services in the funeral home.

It is the wishes of the family that Memorial Contributions be given to the Resident’s Aid Fund at the Brethren Retirement Center of Greenville, Ohio

Greenville's William Johnson Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for Car Wreck

On October 25, 2010, William F. Johnson Jr. of Greenville, Ohio entered pleas of “No Contest” in the Preble County Common Pleas Court and was sentenced to two (2) years in prison on one count “Aggravated Vehicular Assault” (R.C. 2903.08(A)(1)(a)), a felony of the third degree, and “Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol” (R.C. 4511.19(A)(1)(a)), a misdemeanor of the first degree ... Mississinawa announces plan to make up calamity days online

UPDATE: Lisa Wendel appeared on the MSNBC show NewsNation Tuesday afternoon to discuss the pilot program (see hi-tech screen grab to the right).

Mississinawa Valley will test a new pilot program this year allowing students to make up snow/calamity days online. The program is being tested in response to the reduction of calamity days from 5 to 3 for the current school year.

The pilot program is similar to a bill introduced by Jim Zehringer. The text of the bill is here. Zehringer, who has coordinated with MV Superintendent Lisa Wendel on the project, said today: "It has been great working with Dr. Wendel on this issue. The staff and school board at Mississinawa Valley share her vision and the students will be the overall winners. Mississinawa Valley is leading the nation in this concept."

Darke County Emergency Notification

Darke County Sheriff’s Office along with the Darke County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management would like to remind residents about the emergency notification system.

This system allows the Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Management to mass notify the public of emergency and hazardous situations. The notification system uses the 911 database and includes all residential and business telephone numbers in the county. Residents may register their cell phones and email addresses if they wish.

The system will be used to notify Darke County residents of emergency situations, hazardous weather conditions and violent crimes that may require the public to shelter in place.

CANDIDATES FORUM ON CABLE

The Candidates' Forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Darke County will be broadcast on GPAT following the event, 10/25.

If you were unable to attend the Candidates’ Night, please be sure to tune into Greenville Public Access Television (GPAT), Channel 5 Wednesday, October 27, Sunday, October 31 or Monday, November 1 at 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM or 6:00 PM each day. The program will be broadcast in its entirety.

The candidates were videotaped and those citizens unable to attend the Forum will have an opportunity to view the candidates and hear their responses to questions. The program will be
less than 2 hours.

The event begins with very brief introductions by unopposed Darke County candidates on the ballot as well as opposed State or Federal Candidates in attendance. Then the evening begins with opposed candidates for State Senate, 5th District followed by candidates for Darke County Commissioner.

Forum participants were given two minute introductory speeches. Following that, they answered questions submitted by the audience and discussed issues. They concluded with a one minute statement. Opposed candidates involved included:

* State Senate, 5th District (Vote for one): William D. Beagle ( R) or Fred Strahorn (D).
* Darke County Commissioner (Vote for one): David Niley (D) , Keith Smith (I) or Mike Stegall (R).

DARKE COUNTY DRUG TASK FORCE DISRUPTS ACTIVE DRUG LAB

On October 25, 2010 at approximately 11:30 AM the Darke County Drug Task Force consisting of the Darke County Sheriff’s Office and the Greenville Police Department responded to an active methamphetamine drug lab at 222½ Euclid Street in the City of Greenville. Also responding to the scene was the City of Greenville Fire Department, Greenville Township Rescue and the Darke County Animal Shelter. The Darke County Clan Lab Unit forced entry into the residence when the occupants refused to open the door. Two adult females were removed from the residence. Once inside deputies found evidence that the occupants were in the middle of manufacturing methamphetamine when task force officers made entry.

Arrested was Johna Wood, age 45 of that address. Wood was booked into the Darke County Jail pending charges for Illegal Manufacturing of Methamphetamine. A second adult female was interviewed and released from the scene. She is unidentified since she was not arrested and no charges are filed at this time.

Two dogs were removed from the residence and turned over to the Darke County Animal Shelter.

All emergency responders remained on the scene for most of the day while the lab was dismantled and evidence collected. A private contractor responded to dispose of the hazardous materials.

No other residents were home at the time in the additional units at this address; therefore no evacuation was necessary or conducted. Nearby residents were advised of the situation and given the option to leave or shelter in place with windows and doors closed.

There was no fire or injuries as a result of this incident. This case remains under investigation.

Reported meth lab bust on Euclid Street in Greenville (w/updates)

UPDATE (10/25 @ 4:40 p.m.): one adult female arrested charged with illegal manufacturing of meth. Active meth cook discovered after forced entry by Darke County Drug Task Force Unit and DCSO Clean Lab Unit. No injuries. Assisted by Greenville City Fire Dept, Greenville TWSP Rescue and Greenville PD. A media release will follow.

UPDATE 2 (10/25 @ 5:30 p.m.): the DCSO jail roster shows a 12:05 p.m. arrest of Johna Marie Wood, age 45, at 222 Euclid Avenue, Greenville. ....... and here is Steve Baker's report.

Euclid Street in Greenville has been taped off in the block north of the Penn Street intersection (close to both the junior high and Montessori school). Vehicles from the Greenville Police, the Greenville Fire Department, and the Darke County Sheriff are all present as of 2:00 p.m. Monday. An anonymous tip (proceed with caution) indicates that a meth lab has been identified on Euclid Street in Greenville. The tip further indicates that some neighbors have been evacuated. The evacuation of the neighbors, and presence of the fire department, would corroborate the identification of a meth lab possibly. More details as they are available.

GREENVILLE AREA DOG CLUB MOVES TO NEW FACILITY

The Greenville Area Dog Club has a new training building and will offer obedience and agility classes in the upcoming months.

The building is located in the 5400 block of State Route 49, just north of the Stardust Motel.

“With this building, we’ll be able to offer agility and obedience classes as well as hold competitions,” said Charlotte Wisener, director of agility training for the Greenville Area Dog Club. “We expect to have more flexibility with scheduling in the new location.”

“At this time, club members are cleaning the building and making necessary improvements so that it will be ready for classes in January,” said Barb Rhoades, director of obedience training for GADC.

The Greenville Area Dog Club offers dog obedience, conformation, and agility classes to the public throughout the year. Because it didn’t have a training location to use this fall, it was unable to offer these classes.

“Several people contacted us inquiring about classes,” Rhoades said. “We’re happy to report that we will be offering again soon – maybe as soon as January.”The dog club had been training in the Tractor Supply Company building in Greenville for the past several years.

The Greenville Area Dog Club offers obedience classes for puppies, 12 weeks and older, and adult dogs. Class topics include basic house manners, grooming and care of the dog, heeling, sit, down, stay, and other commands.

It also offers beginning, intermediate and advanced agility classes. In these classes, dogs learn to go over jumps, through tunnels, and negotiate other obstacles such as a dog walk, A-frame, chute and teeter-totter.

“We are in the process of putting together a training schedule for the coming year,” Rhoades said. “Once we have the schedule confirmed, we will announce it.”

NATIONAL DIABETES MONTH

November is National Diabetes Month. This is a time to remember the importance of blood glucose management for those who have diabetes and to focus on the prevention of diabetes.

Currently, there are nearly 24 million children and adults with diabetes in the United States . Another 57 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

What is the toll of diabetes on our health? About 60-70% of people with diabetes have mild to severe forms of nerve damage. The rate of amputation is 10 times higher than for people without diabetes. Two out of three people with diabetes die from heart disease or stroke. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure and new cases of blindness among adults.

GREENVILLE CROSS COUNTRY RESULTS

The Greenville high school boys and girls cross country teams competed this past Saturday in the Dayton District Cross Country meet at the Miami Valley Career Tech Center.

Leading the girls were Chloe Warvel and Kristen Karns who both qualified for a spot at the regional meet this coming Saturday at Troy. Warvel negotiated the 3.1 mile course in a time of 20:19 (13th), followed by Karns 20:37 (16th), Cheyanne Beam 22:08 (32nd), Catherine Gibson 22:12 (33rd), Elizabeth Conway 23:03 (48th), Angela Borgerding 23:16 (53rd), and Emily Hayes 24:13 (71st). The Lady wave finished 6th overall missing team qualification to regionals by two spots. Congratulations on a fine season by all these young ladies and best of luck to Chloe Warvel and Kristen Karns in their quest to move on to the state meet.

The boys were once again led by a strong effort from Andrew Cox. Cox ran the course in a time of 16:47 placing him 7th overall in the boys division one race securing him a ticket to the regional meet on Saturday.

Following Cox were Andrew Burns 17:59 (38th), Michael Karns 18:17 (47th), Lucas McCabe 18:18 (48th), Calen Bruner 18:34 (54th), Landon Bruner 19:03 (66th), and Caleb Oda 19:36 (73rd). The boys finished 8th overall ending their season as a team. Congrats to the fellas for a very nice season and good luck to Andrew Cox in his quest to move on to the state meet.

DarkeJournal softball team finishes strong

The DarkeJournal softball team wrapped up the regular season Sunday evening in the Greenville fall coed league. DJ finished strong with a 19-18 win in its final regular season game. Good luck in the tournament.

Marco's Pizza pick'em winner for Week 7: jobywonkenobe

This week's Pick'em was a close contest. Six players picked all the games correctly. Incredibly, three of those picked 56 total points for the first tiebreaker (Arcanum's 48-7 loss). For the second tiebreaker, jobywonkenobe was closest - and he gets the pizza for Week 9. The other five to get all the games correct: Chris Eby, Tony Liette, Kami Horner, Dave Horner, and again - Norman Christian (that guy is amazing).

I was going through some vacation pics from a couple of years ago, and came across this series of photos taken of me descending and ascending this steep sand bluff. Click on this link to see the pics.

Like my trip down this sand dune, landing on the school board was relatively painless. But, now that I'm here, I realize there is a climb ahead for me.

There are many issues out there, many concerns. Hopefully some of you will acknowledge that there are some positives too. For instance, just tonight I heard a concert given by the Jazz Scene and the Wavaires. WOW. We are blessed. So we are great in some areas, and may need improvement in other areas.

At any rate, I said I wanted to be a listener. So, with that in mind, I'd like to hear from you. What would you say are the needs of this school district? Some of them are obvious to both of us, but go ahead and state them anyway. Also, think deep about some of the not so obvious ones. A new feature & some submission guidelines

DarkeJournal now has a new "Upcoming Community Events" box in the left sidebar (a sample image is shown to the right). Inside the box, you can click on the individual events and it will expand to show the time, location, and description of the events. It's really a pretty useful feature. Before, individual events could be promoted here, but were in no particular order, and the listings would have to be "bumped" to bring new attention to the event. Hopefully this new feature will solve some of those issues.

On a related note, there are a lot of announcements being submitted on a daily basis. Please follow these basic guidelines to assist in getting your announcement included accurately and quickly: 1) Write your press release exactly as you wish it to appear, 2) please have a title for your post, 3) make sure the time and place are listed for your event, and 4) please do not send in big pdf files of brochures you've created (they do not fit the page well), or if you must, create a small landscape-oriented brochure.

Hope in REcovery teen will share her story - October 29th

She’s only 14 years old but has experienced more in her short life than any child should. Hope in Recovery will have a teenager share her story of living with addictions in her family on Friday, October 29th, at 7:00 pm at the regular Friday night Hope in Recovery support group meeting.

Hope in Recovery meetings are always open meetings and are not limited to the abuse of drugs or alcohol alone. If you are a family member affected by the addiction or compulsion of a loved one, we welcome you to the meetings as well.

Hope in Recovery meets every Tuesday afternoon from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. Hope in Recovery, Hope-a-non and Hope for Teens also meet every Friday night from 7:00 – 8:15 pm. Meetings are held on the second floor (teens meet on the first floor) of the First Presbyterian Church, 114 E. 4th Street, Greenville.

GHS Vocal Music Fall Concert - October 26th

On Tuesday, October 26 beginning at 7:00 p.m., the GHS Vocal Music Department, under the direction of Michele Smith, will present Fall Concert at Memorial Hall. This concert will feature all of the GHS choirs, including Wavaires, Choraliers, Concert Choir, Girls Glee, Men's and Women's choirs. All seats are reserved. Zehringer to Speak to Women's Club - November 8th

The Darke County Republican Women’s Club will hold their regular meeting on Monday, November 8, 6:30 p.m. at The Brethren Community Center. The club is pleased to announce that the speaker for the event will be Ohio Representative Jim Zehringer.

Mr. Zehringer represents House District 77 which includes Mercer, part of Darke, and Preble Counties. Comments and questions about the Nov. 2 election can be anticipated.

Bemiller Conducts Antiques Appraisal at Garst Museum

Mr. Steve Bemiller from Garths Auctions in Delaware, Ohio, conducted an Antiques Appraisal at Garst Museum recently. Interested members of the audience brought in their treasures and heirlooms to be given approximate worth and available information on their origin. Mr. Bemiller also talked about the current areas of interest in antiques and collectibles, and answered many questions from the audience.

Garst Museum is also announcing the November lecture in the series. It will be a return of the popular “Salute to Veterans” with a panel of veterans from several wars. The audience can have the opportunity to gain insight into the experiences of our armed service members. This lecture is open and free to the public, thanks to grants from the HOPE Foundation and the Harry D. Stephens Memorial Trust. The program will begin at 2:00 p.m. Refreshments available. Mark your calendars: date is Sunday, November 7th at 2:00 p.m.

Former Sheriff employee acquitted on rape charges

Ryan D. Hunt was acquitted on all charges Thursday evening following a trial in the Darke County Common Pleas Court. The jury deliberated approximately 45 minutes before returning a verdict of Not Guilty.

On July 23, 2009 the Darke County Grand Jury indicted Ryan D. Hunt, age 27 of New Madison, OH on two counts of Rape. Each count of Rape is a felony of the first degree with a minimum mandatory sentence of three years up to a maximum of ten years in prison. This indictment was the result of a criminal investigation conducted by the Darke County Sheriff’s Office. On June 29, 2009 the Darke County Sheriff’s Office received a report that Ryan D. Hunt had allegedly raped an adult female in southern Darke County. The case which is still actively being investigated was forwarded to the Darke County Prosecutor’s Office for review and subsequently presented to the July session of the Darke County Grand Jury.

At the time of this offense Ryan D. Hunt was employed as a probationary corrections officer and worked in the Darke County Jail. Ryan D. Hunt was not a certified law enforcement officer or certified corrections officer because he had not attended any academy or completed probationary status. Ryan D. Hunt was hired on August 18, 2008. He was placed on administrative leave with pay on June 29, 2009. On July 2, 2009 Ryan D. Hunt voluntarily resigned from the Darke County Sheriff’s Office.

Franklin Monroe Boys' Soccer Team Continues to Soar in Tournament Action

The Franklin Monroe boys' soccer team defeated Xenia Christian 6-0 in tournament play Thursday evening. The Jets dominated most of the game as the defense held them scoreless. FM started off with a goal by Jaden Horner who was assisted by Chris Campbell. Horner then assisted Steven Madascy to bring the halftime score to 2-0. Xenia Christian was no match for the Jets as Horner headed a goal in from an assist by Tyler Schrodi bringing his yearly assists to eight for the year. As Horner was tripped in the box, he scored on a penalty kick bringing the score to 4-0. Shortly after, Dillon Medrano scored from a nice pass from Steven Madascy. Tyler King assisted Horner to bring the final score to 6-0. This win brings the Jets to 12-4-2 while Xenia Christian fall to 3-9-4. The Jets will now play Bethel at Bellbrook High School on Monday, October 25 at 5:30.

Beggars’ Night 2010

A special logo has been created for Beggar’s Night on Broadway, Thursday October 28 as a way to ensure safety fo the children participating. Parents and children should look for these badges at the various activity stations and candy stops on Broadway that evening.

This special event, immediately following the annual Lion’s Club Halloween Parade at 7 pm, will be held rain or shine and is geared towards children in Kindergarten through fifth grade. Joan Bradt, committee member, of the Main Street Greenville committee reminds the community that while South Broadway is closed to traffic, parking is available on side streets and public parking lots off of 5th Street and 3rd Street.

In addition to candy stations, a haunted house, monster mash dance party on 5th street and a luminary display of pumpkins at the circle will be part of the event. The committee encourages participants to bring unwanted eyeglasses to the event to drop off at the several locations accepting the glasses for the Lion’s Club Work For Sight Program.

Over fifty businesses are participating in this event that has been organized as a way for downtown businesses to say thank you to the community for doing business in the downtown. Diabetic Group Classes

November is National Diabetes Month. This is a time to remember the importance of blood glucose management. Diabetic group classes offer a great opportunity to learn ways to better control your blood glucose.

The Wayne HealthCare Diabetes Self Management Education Program is offering a four week interactive class to help you live an active and healthy life with diabetes. The interactive format provides a fun way to learn while understanding how others with diabetes are dealing with different aspects of diabetes care.

The classes will discuss facts associated with diabetes and strategies to control blood sugar. We will discuss the progression of diabetes over time. We will talk about healthy eating to control blood sugar and overall health. We will review the importance of monitoring our blood sugar and how to use the results that you are obtaining to help improve blood sugar. We will discuss causes of low and high blood sugar. We will discuss how to properly treat low blood sugar and ways to lower blood sugar when it is elevated.

The classes also focus on the importance of exercise in blood sugar management. We will discuss how to incorporate physical activity into our daily lives and strategies to help us stay active. The different diabetic medications can be very confusing, so we will discuss how different medications work on the body to help manage our blood sugar. We will also talk about ways to reduce the risk of complications.

The next series of classes will be offered on November 1, 8, 15, and 22, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Wayne HealthCare. The cost to attend is $10 per class. Registration is required so please contact the Certified Diabetes Educator at 937-547-5750.

Open thread: what do you think about Juan Williams being fired?

Juan Williams has been a senior news analyst for National Public Radio (NPR) for many years. On a cable news show Monday, Williams said the following: "I mean, look, Bill, I’m not a bigot. You know the kind of books I’ve written about the civil rights movement in this country. But when I get on the plane, I got to tell you, if I see people who are in Muslim garb and I think, you know, they are identifying themselves first and foremost as Muslims, I get worried. I get nervous."

Williams also referenced the Pakistani immigrant who tried to plant a car bomb in Times Square. "He said the war with Muslims, America’s war is just beginning, first drop of blood. I don’t think there’s any way to get away from these facts," Williams said.

NPR fired Juan Williams Friday saying his statements “were inconsistent with our editorial standards and practices, and undermined his credibility as a news analyst with NPR.”
