Englewood, Ohio -- Laughter, encouragement, and hands-on exploring is what you will see and hear coming from the preschool at the Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC). This preschool is unique in that junior and senior high school students run it as part of the Early Childhood Education program. The program’s instructors, Connie Marshal and Darnice Wilkinson, educate students on all areas of child development, instructional strategies, and curriculum set forth by the State of Ohio Board of Education. Students apply their knowledge and skills by operating a fully functional preschool for three to five year olds. Every day the preschoolers explore and learn through various activities designed and implemented by these bright young educators.

The preschool is divided into two different classes, one in the morning, and one in the afternoon. On any given day, you will find children in the preschool actively involved and enjoying learning. “Each morning these children walk through that door with a smile on their face and an aura of sheer delight to be here and to learn with us and we are honored by that,” said Alicia Newman, program assistant.

Enrollment for the next school year begins February 1, 2015. Children ages three to five (must be three by June 1) and that are potty trained may apply. Both morning and afternoon classes will be offered on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, & Thursdays. The morning class is from 9-11:25 a.m. and the afternoon class is from 11:50-2:15 p.m. There is a $20 non-refundable registration fee and yearly tuition is $420. Please call 937-854-6070 for more information regarding the MVCTC Pre-school program.

CBC CELEBRATES VECTREN FOR 10 YEARS OF SCHOLARSHIPS

VECTREN CONTINUES SUPPORT WITH ‘LEAD THE WAY’ SPONSORSHIP

CBC honors Vectren for support of the Lead The Way Creative Scholarship program; (L-R) Retiring Vectren Community Affairs Manager Lynda Hoffman, CBC/CTS CEO Dr. David Smith, Vectren Community Affairs Manager Rachel Goodspeed, & CBC COO Jodi Minneman.
DAYTON, Ohio – Community Blood Center (CBC) is celebrating 10 years of partnering with Vectren Energy Delivery of Ohio (Vectren) to award college scholarships to high school seniors who creatively challenge their peers to be blood donors. Vectren has provided $50,000 in tuition assistance since first sponsoring the original CBC “Save Our Supply” scholarship in 2005. Vectren’s $5,000 pledge for the 2015 CBC/Vectren Lead The Way Creative Scholarship marks its 11th year of sponsorship.

The Lead The Way goal is to motivate young adults to become blood resource leaders of tomorrow by annually awarding $1,000 in college tuition assistance to five scholarship recipients. Any student whose high school hosts a CBC blood drive can compete for the scholarship by creating a winning blood drive recruitment campaign. The 2015 application deadline is April 20.

The announcement of funding for the 2015 Lead The Way scholarship is an opportunity for CBC to honor Vectren for its 10-year history of support. Community Blood Center/Community Tissue Services (CBC/CTS) Chief Executive Officer Dr. David Smith and CBC Chief Operating Officer Jodi Minneman presented a glass “Lead The Way” lighthouse statuette and plaque to Vectren, and also honored retiring Vectren Community Affairs Manager Lynda Hoffman with a glass lighthouse statuette. New Community Affairs Manager Rachel Goodspeed now serves as Vectren’s liaison with CBC in the Lead The Way Creative Scholarship Program.

“This has been an extremely satisfying partnership,” said Dr. Smith. “We’ve seen the level of competition grow each year and it’s very impressive. With Vectren’s help, these bright young scholarship winners are using their talents and following their dreams. We’re also very thankful to the administrators and volunteers at our 118 blood drive high schools. They welcome us into their schools and support our lifesaving mission.”

Vectren has assisted 50 scholarship winners and the program continues to attract well-qualified applicants. In 2014 CBC accepted 64 applications from students representing 35 schools from 11 counties in CBC’s 15-county service area, a 48 percent increase from 2013. Applications in 2013 increased 30 percent over the previous year.

“We are proud to support a program that not only challenges students across the Miami Valley to think like leaders while cultivating their creative skills – it gets them involved at a deeper level in our community,” said Vectren’s Rachel Goodspeed. “It’s important to keep our youth motivated to further their education and involved in giving back to our community. They are the community leaders of tomorrow.”

A Lead The way tradition is to put winning scholarship campaigns to work. Submitted campaign videos are shown at area high schools and winning campaign slogans and graphic designs are often adopted for CBC use. A recent example is from 2013 scholarship winner and Russia High School graduate Shana Meyer. She inspired the 2014 CBC high school t-shirt design with her social media driven theme “#Saving Lives is Always Trending!”

Lead The Way is open to all graduating high school seniors in CBC’s 15-country service area who are college bound and whose high school hosted a CBC blood drive during the 2014-15 academic year. A cumulative grade point average of 2.5 is the minimum academic requirement.

Applicants are challenged to create a winning Donor Recruitment Campaign. They must create a theme expressed in a marketing slogan; explain why the theme will effectively encourage students to donate; and creatively demonstrate the theme using conventional marketing techniques or innovative, artistic expressions.

All candidates should submit their application and blood drive marketing campaign to CBC. Mailings must be postmarked by April 20, 2015. Five winners will be announced in May. Application forms and samples of award-winning campaigns are available online at www.GivingBlood.org. For more information contact Education Specialist Cristina Pickle at 937-461-3453 or bloodeducation@givingblood.org.

DCSO Release: Icey Roadway Leads to Truck Rolling Into Creek Bed

No comments:
On January 29, 2015 at approximately 9:17 AM Darke County Deputies, along with Arcanum Fire and Rescue, New Madison Fire, Tri-Village Rescue, Greenville Township Rescue and CareFlight were dispatched to the 2800 Block of Littles Road in reference to a rollover injury accident into a creek bed.

Preliminary investigation revealed a 2003 Ford Ranger Extended cab truck, driven by Lucas A. Gower, 18 of Arcanum, Ohio was northbound on Littles Road north of Hollansburg-Arcanum Road. Gower lost control of his vehicle on the ice covered roadway causing him to travel off the right side of the roadway. Gower's vehicle spun out of control as it struck a mailbox and traveled over the embankment into the creek bed. Gower's vehicle came to rest on it's side in the water.

Gower and his 10 year old female passenger were transported to Wayne HealthCare by Arcanum Rescue and Greenville Township Rescue. Gower's 11 year old male passenger was airlifted to Dayton Children's Hospital by CareFlight.

The Darke County Sheriff's Office would like to remind everyone to use extreme caution when driving on snow and ice covered roadways, as it creates hazardous conditions.

This accident remains under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff's Office.

A Sales Tax Holiday to Relieve Costs Associated with Back to School Items

No comments:
Guest Column from State Representative Jim Buchy

Ohio families can now prepare for a new major retail shopping season. Senate Bill 243, which passed both chambers and was signed into law during the 130th General Assembly, means that Ohioans will be able to save sales tax dollars when handling their back-to-school shopping this coming year. Ohio’s first ever Sales Tax Holiday will take place August 7th-9th, and experts say shoppers should expect Black Friday-like excitement.

This bill is very important to me, as eliminating the sales tax on these items both at retail stores and on the internet will help ensure that all children and students can get what is necessary for the upcoming school year. A good investment in their education is a good investment into their future, and that’s what the Sales Tax Holiday seeks to create.

Many popular retail stores have shown their support for this new Sales Tax Holiday, such as Walmart, Macy’s, J.C. Penny, CVS, and Best Buy. These stores are frequent stops for back-to-school shoppers, and their backing makes it even more exciting. With the help of this bill, Ohio families with children K-12 will save roughly $40 each on their school shopping list in a normal school year.

This measure will promote economic growth in Ohio and will allow consumers to spend manageable amounts of money on the things that they need for the upcoming school year. The Sales Tax Holiday is expected to put $78 million back into the pockets of Ohioans. It would also provide a boost for Ohio’s retail sector, which makes up 18 percent of Ohio’s GDP and employs one in four Ohio citizens.

There are eighteen other states in the country that have a Sales Tax Holiday. Implementing this could potentially result in an economic boost very similar to the one seen in Florida. That state posted $115 million more in tax revenue during the three-day tax-free period, showing that consumers were buying many items that were not tax-free as well.

The bill made its way through the legislative process, passing through both the House and the Senate, and was signed by Governor Kasich on December 19th, 2014. We now look forward to seeing its outcome this coming August. I am confident that we have done good work for the people of Ohio with this bill.

Please take a minute to look over a website explaining more about the Sales Tax Holiday at tinyurl.com/ohiosalestaxholiday. In addition, a special survey is available at tinyurl.com/ohiosalestaxholidaysurvey which will be useful in gathering feedback about this new measure.

Longtown: A Reason To Celebrate African American History Month

No comments:
Connor Keiser with pictures of
his Longtown ancestors.
On Thursday February 5th at 6:30 the Greenville Public Library will host a presentation by Connor Keiser on the history of Longtown Ohio. Many people have been to Longtown or have heard of it but most are unaware of its significance and rich history as the first free black settlement in Ohio. It was founded by Connor’s 5th great-grandparents James & Sophia Clemens in 1822.

The Clemens Family arrived in Ohio from Virginia with slave-owner Adam Sellers who freed his people and provided them with land. Other free blacks joined what became known as the Greenville Negro Settlement. As it grew, a school and several churches and cemeteries were established and it was an important station on the Underground Railroad.

The height of its population was around 900 people in the 1940’s. Many descendants live in the Muncie, Richmond, Indianapolis, and Dayton areas. A well-known tavern was opened in 1956 where Connor’s grandparents first met. Its baseball teams from the 1930’s onwards, the Longtown Tigers and Longtown Giants, were legendary!

Today the Union Literary Institute Preservation Society is raising money and awareness for the above named school which was founded by Connor’s grandfather in 1914. It was a manual labor school for all races and provided room & board. One church from 1856 is still active, the Bethel Long Wesleyan Church, holding services every Sunday. The Community Center also hosts an annual “homecoming.“

Connor is proud to continue the research his grandfather Maze Clemens started. He will have many interesting pictures and facts to share on the big screen TV in the third floor Meeting Room. You’ll learn how the name was changed to Longtown! Light refreshments will be served.

SOUP’S ON! AT DARKE COUNTY BLOOD DRIVE

‘WARMING UP TO GIVE BLOOD’ SOUP CROCK IS FEBRUARY DONOR GIFT

DAYTON & DARKE COUNTY, Ohio – Come in out of the cold and donate blood at a Darke County blood drive. Everyone who registers to donate will receive February’s special collection donor gift, the “Warming Up To Give Blood” soup crock. Donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment online at www.DonorTime.com.

Beethoven struck the right note when he said, “Only the pure in heart can make a good soup.” CBC is hoping to warm hearts during the heart of winter with the “Warming Up to Give Blood” soup crock and spoon. It’s a free donor gift to everyone who registers to donate Monday, Feb. 2 through Saturday, Feb. 28 at any CBC Donor Center and most CBC mobile blood drives.

The ceramic soup crock is mug size with two handles, red on the inside and black on the outside, with “Warming up to Give Blood” in red lettering along with the CBC blood drop logo. It comes with a red ceramic soup spoon.

Blood is traditionally in short supply during the winter months due to the holidays, travel schedules, inclement weather and illness. January can be an especially difficult month for blood centers to collect blood donations. CBC begins the New Year with an ample reserve and careful blood collection planning in place to reliably provide the blood and blood products needed to our 25 partner hospitals in CBC’s 15-county service area.

Versailles Boys Varsity Bowlers Now 8-3

No comments:
The Versailles Varsity Bowlers had a couple of close losses to Wapakoneta and Minster during a lot of action the last couple of weeks. Their record is now 8-3 for the season.

The match against Wapakoneta went back and for the from the 1st game all the way through the Baker games. Going into the last Baker game, the Tigers were up 12 pins. However, they failed to convert key spares the last game and Wapak beat them 180 to 161. The total score ended Wapak 2,806 to Versailles 2,794.

The next match was against New Bremen and they had no issues on this match winning 2,051 to 1,686. This was a shortened match due to this being a double shift. The 2nd match was against a much improved Minster team. The Tigers continued to have issues converting crucial spares under pressure situations and rolled a 115 their last Baker Game to Minster’s 189. The match ended up in Minster’s favor, 1,851 to 1,832. (once again this was a short format due to the double shift)

On Martin Luther King Day, the boys competed in the Pioneer Classic in Lima. “Now that we are out of the running to defend our WOHSBC title, it is time to re-focus and get ready for post season play. Our new season starts today. You guys need to start believing in yourselves more and executing better under pressure,” said Coach Davidson. Well, the boys answered. The lane pattern was the state pattern from last years tournament, so it was going to be difficult, especially on 40 year old wood lanes.

The boys were 13th after the 1st game and continued to work hard. They shot up to 7th after two games and remained there after the 3rd game and 5 baker games. The stage was set for the best 3 out of 5 Baker games. The 1st match was against St. Henry. The Tigers were down, but not out going into the 8th frame. “We got on a roll and rolled some really good shots and struck out to put the pressure on St. Henry. All they needed to do was mark in the 9th or 10th. St. Henry failed to do so and we won the 1st game”, said Davidson. The next 2 games were won by the Tigers with ease to move on to the final 4.

The always tough Wapakoneta Redskins were ready to bowl the Tigers. Although the Tigers rolled a couple of 200 games, Wapak was just too tough that day. They ended up beating the Tigers in 3 games and then rolled over Coldwater in 3 games to win the tournament.

This past Saturday, the boys had two more matches against Mississinawa Valley and Parkway. The Tigers defeated them 2,779 to 2,315 in a full match and 2,235 to 1,543 in a shortened match due to a double header. Dustin Ruhe led the Tigers for the day with a high game of 246 and a 441 series for 2 games.

All results and standings can be found at www.wohsbc.com.

VISITORS BUREAU SUPPORTS THREE EVENTS IN 2015

No comments:
Top: Illumination Festival. Bottom Left: Tour de Donut. Bottom Right: YOLO: Festival of Races
GREENVILLE, OH – The Darke County Visitors Bureau released the names of the recipients of the 2015 Darke County Tourism Grant. This year, three recipients were chosen. They are: Illumination Festival, Tour de Donut and YOLO: Festival of Races.

“The grant committee received several applications from various organizations throughout Darke County,” stated grant committee member, Lisa Martin. “All of the applications came from great organizations with worthwhile events to promote. The three recipients chosen were those that best align with the purpose of the Visitors Bureau grants: to provide funding to market events that attract overnight visitors and impact local economy.”

The Illumination Festival started with a handful of people with a common goal in mind – to bring the top artists in contemporary Christian music to Darke County. After the first year it was clear that Darke County residents were ready for this to become an annual event. Now in its ninth year, the Illumination Festival Committee has continually expanded, and this year has made some major changes as the event has moved back to Saturday. While the committee still has details to work out, The Illumination Festival will continue to be a family friendly, quality day of events and an amazing concert to wrap up the evening. While there is a good representation of Darke County residents, more and more people from outside the community are discovering the Illumination Festival with tickets having been sold to persons from across western Ohio, Michigan and Indiana. But that shouldn’t be too much of a surprise since they attract the top names in the music industry, such as TobyMac, Newsboys, Big Daddy Weave, MercyMe, Sanctus Real, Tenth Avenue North, Plumb, and Britt Nicole to name a few. Bands have yet to be named for this year. Illumination Festival is supported by a grant from the Darke County Visitors Bureau that helps us in the marketing of the festival to the surrounding counties.

The committee responsible for putting the event together includes Marty and Connie McCabe, Daryl Riffle, Dan Franks, Julie Strait, Chris Hammaker, Nick Hammaker, Jennifer Thomas, John Gilmore, Sean Lawrence and Ryan Berry.

The Tour de Donut is successfully ran by Rocketship Sports Management, a non-profit event management company that promotes athletic events that it owns, and assists other non-profits in maximizing their return on running, cycling and multisport races. Founded in 2007, the group has produced over 200 events including state and national cycling championships. The group is probably most known for The Tour de Donut or Colavita-Zipp time trial series though also promotes The Grand Lake marathon, The Donut Dash and The Shawshank Hustle.

The Tenth Annual Tour de Donut will take place in Arcanum on the first Saturday after Labor Day, September 12, 2015. The event is like no other as it combines bicycle riding and donut eating. In 2007, more than 100 racers took part and last year, more than 1,800 from 26 states and 5 countries ate 750 dozen donuts. A fun-filled weekend of activities begins Friday afternoon with Friday evening dinner rides and entertainment before the free kids’ events and rides take place on Saturday. New for 2015 will be totally new courses, for all 3 ride distances. Full details are available at: www.thetourdedonut.com

The YOLO Organization, founded by Phillip and Jodi Pierri, strives to continuously improve the community while bringing together high-energy people to promote healthy lifestyles and to embrace life to the fullest. The Pierri’s created the YOLO organization because of their passion to give back to their community. Their events include the YOLO Festival of Races, Poultry Day’s 5K and the YOLO Open. All proceeds from these events will be administrated through the Darke County Foundation. These funds will be used for community projects throughout Darke County that the entire community can enjoy.

“We want to thank the Darke County Visitors Bureau for their continued support,” expressed Phillip Pierri. Please visit www.YOLOorg.com for more information on the YOLO Organization.

“With the award of these three grants, the Darke County Visitors Bureau takes another step toward achieving its mission to attract visitors to Darke County,” stated Roger Van Frank, President of the Darke County Visitors Bureau Board of Trustees.

Funds are made available to non-profit tourism attractions and organizations sponsoring special events and programs in Darke County. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis, with primary consideration given to applications, which: (1) attract overnight visitors; (2) attract visitors from more than 50 miles outside of Darke County and (3) feature new or expanded events or programs.

“This grant program is designed to encourage creative thinking to gain “new” money from travelers into our community,” stated Executive Director, Deanna York. “Many new ideas and concepts were presented during this process. The bureau encourages local non-profit organizations to continue to think outside the box and apply for the grant.”

Order Your Tickets Today for Exciting Valentines Evening Planned by the Versailles Area Historical Society

No comments:
This year’s annual historic dinner will be held at the Versailles Knights of Columbus Hall on St. Rt. 47 West. The special evening will be a true Valentines treat come February 14th.

Cocktails will be available beginning at 6:00 pm at our new cash bar. Dinner with two courses of wine included will be served at 7:00 pm.

We will be recreating the Welcome Dinner possibly hosted by Herr Seibt and his wife as they invite their newest neighbors in Dutch Roost or today, we would say Webster. In 1840 many German/Prussians came up the Stillwater to the tiny village that would come to feel like home.

Your hosts will transform you back to an old Inn and will recount the days of a bustling Webster with taverns, mills, general store, and many prosperous farms that surrounded the fertile rural area.

Dinner will be served by candle light and will feature German/American foods, from roasted turkey and dressing, to fresh sausage and sauerkraut, along with several delicious side dishes and a fabulous dessert, not to mention the appetizers of stuffed mushrooms and sauerkraut balls.

Live music of the period will enhance your trip back in time to a special place in our areas history. Once again our friends Tim & Kathleen Nealeigh will create the roles of the Seibts who were prosperous leading citizens of the community. Today the Seibts are honored with a road running through Webster to the Miami County line and their many neighbors are also remembered in the names of the roads around this picturesque village and the farms that surround.

Limited seating is available, so it is recommended to purchase tickets early! They are on sale now by contacting the museum at 937-526-4222 for $50.00 each or you may mail your check made out to the Versailles Area Historical Society to Jim Kelch at 105 Greenhaven Dr. Greenville, Oh. 45331 and your tickets will be held at the door for your convenience.

Reid launches new ‘responsive’ health system web site

No comments:
ReidHospital.org (CLICK HERE FOR VIDEO)

Reid has launched a new health system web site that has a focus on wellness and offers a simpler, “responsive” design.

“Our goal was to provide a resource that still contains extensive information about our system, but with a look and feel that is better organized and more adaptable,” said Larry Price, Reid Director of Community Relations. Price noted that the site is set up in a responsive design, which means it adjusts content to fit a personal computer, tablet or smart phone.

“We will also continue to add resources that promote and provide for community health and wellness,” he said. The web system also allows content to be customized for the user depending on whether the person using the site identifies themselves as a visitor, patient or physician. “As a growing regional health system, we know that the amount of information we need to provide on multiple health services can be overwhelming,” Price said. “We provide services that affect people at all stages of life. We have multiple programs and service lines, each with a story to tell. We asked our developers to keep the consumer in mind as they redesigned and reorganized extensive information.”

Besides mobile optimization, the site includes:

  • Dedicated areas for service lines such as orthopedics, heart & vascular and cancer
  • Quick access to the MyReidHealth patient portal, which connects patients with their providers and information, and the “Find a Doctor” search function
  • An increased focus on wellness and the importance of screenings
  • More accessible links to Reid’s social media channels such as Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube and Twitter
  • Improved maps and location information
  • An improved calendar of events
  • Simplified organization
  • Regular news and wellness postings on the home page
  • And more scheduled postings of health and wellness information

The redesigned main hospital site completes a phased project that also included the development and launch of a new site specifically for Reid Physician Associates (RPA): www.ReidDoctors.org. The site includes information about the numerous physician practices and satellite offices in the region.

Price said it was also gratifying for Reid that the web redesign project was handled by a local business -- Irongate Creative, an agency in Hagerstown, IN. “Reid by policy seeks to use local vendors and businesses whenever possible. And they have done a great job for us.”

National Birth Defects Prevention Awareness Month

No comments:
2015: Making Healthy Choices to Prevent Birth Defects - Make a PACT for Prevention

Birth defects affect one in every 33 babies born in the United States and are a leading cause of infant mortality. Babies who survive and live with birth defects are at increased risk for developing many lifelong physical, cognitive, and social challenges. Medical care and support services only scrape the surface of the financial and emotional impact of living with birth defects.

Each year, the month of January is designated National Birth Defects Prevention Awareness Month. This annual campaign is promoted by the National Birth Defects Prevention Network (NBDPN) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and throughout Ohio. The network assesses the impact of birth defects upon children, families, and health care; identifies factors that can be used to develop prevention strategies; and assists families and their providers in secondary disabilities.

The theme for 2015 National Birth Defects Prevention Month is "Making Healthy Choices to Prevent Birth Defects-Make a PACT for Prevention." NBDPN's goal for 2015 is to continue to increase awareness that birth defects are "Common, Costly and Critical" and to offer actionable steps that can be taken by professionals, community groups, and the public to prevent birth defects.

Here in Darke County, Help Me Grow offers services that help with prevention and offer individuals an opportunity to earn needed items for their baby. The services are for pregnant first time moms or moms with infants up to age three. To take advantage of this program a new mom must enter the program during her prenatal period or before the new baby reaches 6 months of age. The program helps educate individuals on topics that are of interest to pregnant moms and new moms. It also provides community resource education. Some examples of items that can be earned from being part of the program are cribs, pack n plays, bassinets, toddler beds, car seats, swings, boosters, baby food, bottles, and diapers.

The goals of the program are to increase healthy pregnancies, improve parenting confidence and competence, and improve child health, development, and school readiness.

To sign up for this program call the Health Department Help Me Grow Program at (937) 547-9392.

Hospice Schedules Grief Support Group

No comments:
Many people struggle with the long gray days of winter, but for those dealing with grief, those days can seem even darker. State of the Heart Hospice has scheduled adult grief support group sessions beginning Wednesday, February 4 for anyone in the community who needs help dealing with grief and loss.

The meetings will be held each Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. in the evening at the Greenville office, 1350 N. Broadway, The sessions, which are free, will continue each Wednesday evening through March 11. It is not necessary to have experienced hospice services.
“Adult grief support groups offer those experiencing grief to be with other people who feel as they do,” stated Meredith Carpe, a Licensed Social worker who is part of the State of the Heart bereavement staff and who will facilitate the group sessions. “People have the opportunity to talk about their grief and feelings of loss; they realize they are not the only ones feeling as they do,” she added.

Bereavement support is an important service provided by State of the Heart Hospice. The non-profit agency offers grief support to adults and children.
State of the Heart also offers a summer camp for children who are grieving called Camp BEARable. Camp this year will be July 17-19.

“Each person handles grief in their own way,” Carpe explained. “Those who have attended grief support groups in the past say they have found the sessions to be helpful and valuable to them. Many of those who have attended have formed friendships and now have someone they can call who understands their feelings of grief and loss.”

State of the Heart has offices in Greenville, Coldwater and Portland. The agency cares for families and patients in eastern Indiana and western Ohio who are confronting a life limiting illness. It is necessary to register for the grief support groups. Call 1-800-417-7535 and ask for extension 545 to speak to a member of the bereavement staff to register. For more information about the services offered by State of the Heart, visit the web site at www.stateoftheheartcare.org.

Reid ranked among the best in the country for infection control

No comments:
Reid Hospital achieved the highest possible infection prevention rating in a recent survey by the Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center—one of only 37 hospitals in the country to do so. In Indiana, Reid shared top honors with Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Michigan City for having the top Consumer Reports score among the state’s 121 hospitals.

Consumer Reports evaluated about 4,000 U.S. hospitals for their success in avoiding bloodstream, surgical site and catheter-associated urinary tract infections. The ratings included information on each of those types of infections, and combined them into an overall infections rating that reflects a hospital’s ability to prevent infections.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, there were an estimated 720,000 hospital-acquired infections in U.S. in 2011. That’s one in every 25 patients. Even more worrisome: about 75,000 people a year die because of those infections.

“Of the many quality indicators that we manage and track, infections are arguably among the most important of all, given their life threatening potential. Reid physicians and staff take safety very seriously, whether they are caring for patients in the hospital, a physician office or another outpatient facility,” said Craig Kinyon, Reid President/CEO. “This commitment is system wide, and begins at the top of our organization—our Governing Board and Medical Staff review quality and safety data each month. In addition, the health system maintains a multidisciplinary Safety and Quality Committee to ensure we are doing all we can to prevent infections.”

Patient Safety Officer Mitch Neal, R.N., said Reid’s culture is one of safety and teamwork. “All employees are trained in safety practices, and actively demonstrate those skills on a daily basis,” he explained. “The team is always striving to be better. It is gratifying to be recognized as the best in the state and among the top nationally.”

Greg Carter, Reid’s Infection Control Practitioner, also credited the Reid team. “We have a great staff that strives to create a safer environment for our patients through infection prevention practices. They understand the importance of following infection policies and procedures. This recognition is a testimony of their accomplishments and hard work.”

Greenville Man Arrested for Trafficking in Drugs in the Vicinity of a School

No comments:
On January 21, 2015 the Darke County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit, along with Greenville Police, executed a search warrant at 216 Victoria Drive, Greenville. Erik Straub (35) of that address was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Darke County Jail. Straub is being charged with Trafficking in Drugs in the vicinity of a school. This investigation stems from ongoing complaints of illegal narcotics trafficking in the area. The search warrant produced prescription medication, drug paraphernalia and other items indicative of trafficking drugs.

Sheriff Toby L. Spencer takes a strong stand against the use of illegal drugs and drug trafficking in our community. One of the most effective weapons is the information received from concerned citizens who observe and report illegal activities in their areas. Citizens are encouraged to contact the Darke County Sheriff’s Office at (937) 548-2020 with information regarding any criminal activity. Citizens may also contact the Darke County Crime Stoppers at (937) 547-1661 and at www.darkecountycrimestoppers.com. Information can be left anonymously.

Speaker Cliff Rosenberger Leading the 131st General Assembly

No comments:
Guest Column from State Representative Jim Buchy

At the start of the new year, many changes took place here at the House. Some members of the General Assembly completed their terms as representatives while some new members came in to start their service to the people of Ohio.

The new year and a new General Assembly also welcomed in a new Speaker of the Ohio House. Representative Cliff Rosenberger of Clarksville, Ohio will serve as the 102nd Speaker of the Ohio House.

Speaker Rosenberger will be one of the youngest speakers ever to lead the Ohio House of Representatives. In the past, most of the Speakers of the Ohio House had served in the legislature for more than twenty years. That isn’t the case anymore because of term limits, which prevent members from serving longer than eight years. Speaker Rosenberger brings new ideas to the table. His ideas will lead the state of Ohio into the future.

Speaker Rosenberger has always been recognized as a man of many talents that have helped him represent the people of Ohio. One of those talents is his ability to build coalitions. He has the remarkable gift of organizing other members to rally around a policy idea, a gift that he will undoubtedly use as leader of the Ohio House.

As a resident of Clarksville, a very rural area, Speaker Rosenberger knows the concerns of people in his district. Many of those concerns are the same ones that people in western Ohio share. As a veteran of the Air National Guard, ensuring that veterans are taken care of is a top priority of his. The same issues that matter to us, matter to him.

Being a senior member of the state Legislature myself, I know what it takes to lead other members and represent the people of Ohio. The character that Speaker Rosenberger carries himself with and the way he is willing to take all the opinions of his colleagues into account assures me that recruiting him to be the next Speaker of the House was a good decision.

Ohio is beginning to turn around. For the past four years, we have been fortunate enough to have Governor Kasich as the leader of our state, as well as many other caring and capable officials. Speaker Rosenberger has made his intention to work with Governor Kasich closely very clear. Together I expect a better, more prosperous Ohio.

Please give me your opinion on this topic and others in the news this month by completing an online survey at tinyurl.com/buchyjanuary2015.

Free Financial Aid Event to be held at Edison

No comments:
Edison Community College will host the state-wide college financial aid event “College Goal Sunday” (CGS) on February 8, 2015 at 2 p.m. The free event, presented by the Ohio Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (OASFAA) and endorsed by the Ohio Board of Regents, assists students and parents with completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is the federal application that is required to receive federal financial aid including the Federal Pell Grant and student loans as well as the need-based state grants.

Due to the great demand expected for assistance in completing the FASFA, families are encouraged to register for the free event at www.ohiocollegegoalsunday.org or by calling 1-800-233-6734. The FAFSA is the key to funding a college education and helping families to overcome financial barriers that otherwise prevent students from attending the institution they want to. Studies show that a student is 50% more likely to attend college when they complete the FAFSA. While walk-ins are welcome, registration is encouraged. Record numbers are expected to be in attendance.

OASFAA is a non-profit, professional organization for individuals actively engaged in the administration of financial aid within the State of Ohio for higher education. As an educational organization, OASFAA strives to offer resources to students, families and high school advisors to promote higher education and increase awareness of financial aid opportunities.

For further information about the event at Edison, contact Stacy Schloss at sschloss@edisonohio.edu or 937-778-7910.

Versailles Lady Bowlers Improve To 5-1

The Lady Tiger’s defeated Russia 2357-0 on January 10th at Plaza Lanes in Celina. The lady bowlers were bowling unopposed this match due to Russia having a school conflict. Leading the way for the Tigers were Hannah Niekamp (212 and 193), Megan Ward (203), and Brooke Condon (160). “Bowling an unopposed match is tough for the girls because going into the match the girls know we already have a win,” said Coach Phlipot.

We have a busy week ahead of us this week. The week starts in Lima, OH on Monday at the Pioneer Classic Tournament. Last week’s match versus New Breman is rescheduled for this Thursday at McBo’s Lanes at 5:30. On Saturday the Tigers travel to New Breman and bowl a double header with the first match against Van Wert and the second match versus Temple Christion.

Children Experience Art and Creativity

No comments:

GREENVILLE – Do you want your child to learn more about art and to be creative? The Art-Rageous Experience – Children’s Art Program is beginning their winter session of art classes for children. In these classes children experience different kinds of art each Saturday morning with a professional artist teaching the class. The parent also attends for the support and encouragement while the children are working. Children work on different projects each week where they learn about different artists, art techniques and also visits from local artists with some of their paintings.

These classes are fun, age appropriate, and keep children’s mind and hands busy! The classes are sponsored by Council on Rural Services and taught by an experienced teacher/artist at a local downtown Greenville setting. There is one class for 4-5-6-7 year olds and another for 8-9-10-11 year olds.

Art programs help young children explore creativity, to pay attention to detail, build self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment.

Full scholarships are available for families if needed, all supplies are furnished. To enroll your child in this class, call Council on Rural Services at 1-866-627-4557 and ask for Debby Brayfield.
