First rumblings on county government cuts

One employee in the adult probation department has been notified of his impending layoff. Reportedly, four or five deputies will be laid off in the sheriff's department. Some officers are openly complaining about the unfairness of any potential layoffs compared with the retention of the recently convicted 911 director.

  1. While in a recession, the last thing that needs to be happening is the laying off of deputies. Crime is going up and will continue to go up as people look for ways to "make ends meet." They make those ends meet by stealing from everyone else. Cut down on social welfare programs or something else, not law enforcement.

  2. A struggling economy does not necessarily mean crime will increase. During the Great Depression, crime actually declined. But during the boom periods of the 80s and 90s, it increased. That would seem to indicate there are other factors contributing to crime other than economics.

  3. lets cut the use of government and city cars. They can use their own. Stop the mowing of the county ditches. Stop planting trees and flowers, it can wait until the situation is better. make only repairs that are needed. Even the Government should tighten their belts.

  4. If you cut down on social welfare programs, won't that cause more crime and therefore NEED more officers because people will be robbing others just to feed thier children? It's a no win situation if you do that. You will either keep paying law enforcement for the crimes now, or lay them off and children will go hungry with that idea. I guess we will see where our priorities stand.

  5. Greenville is facing a deficit but wants to undertake new expenses by doing ambulance work.  When the rest of the county is realizing their financial constraints and laying off workers the city of Greenville spends money they do not have to work on the traffic circle and start their own ambulance service.  What is wrong with the people leading our local government?  It does not seem like they have their priorities straight.

  6. I agree, City vehicles should be left on city lot when not in use. Use personal vehicles to & fro work. This will cut down on fuel..mechanical checks..that taxpayers pay for on a wkly basis

  7. The cuts referred to are County cuts not City. I have heard no talk of City layoffs, yet.

I would have to agree on the vehicle issue though as it is a common practice with some county workers. Park them... Even better sell them!

Also, the EMS (again City)as been kept pretty quiet in the media. I think the citizens should know this proposal is going on behind closed doors. Greenville Township Rescue does a wonderful job with EMS and I this sure feels like a continued power struggle between the city and township.

  8. GREENVILLE'S PRIORITIES...this city has too many chiefs....every official wants to do things their way or rip off the city in a way that it isn't caught for quite some time. Regardless how it effects "everyone". I feel some "outside" council members need to oversee the funding here rather than in-city boys & girls. Officials, like lawyers, don't turn your back on them or they'll screw you! (whether they actually do anything for the county/city or not) They promise you hopes until they get voted in & then.....well, you know!

  9. The city does not plan any layoffs despite an almost $80,000 deficit, at least not publicly. They seem to plan on adding more expenses.

As for the EMS thing being kept quiet in the media; I don't know much about it but it sure seems to me that the city of Greenville owns (figuratively) the [redacted] and decides what goes in and what does not.

  10. People seem more interested in city than county. Hmmm ...

  11. Interest between City & County....either way, it's all about POWER!
