Greenville National Bank was robbed at gunpoint twice last year - on March 7, 2008, and again on July 5, 2008. Both robberies took place at GNB's Wagner Avenue branch.We now know that these robberies were likely committed by Donald Sorrell of Redkey, Indiana (photo at right, digitally enhanced). Sorrell allegedly committed the crimes with 22-year-old Kyle Cyphers as his getaway driver. The term "allegedly" is barely needed here as Sorrell and Cyphers have already been convicted for other bank robbeies in Indiana - and they allegedly made statements regarding the Greenville robberies.
Sorrell appeared today in Darke County Common Pleas Court to be arraigned for both robberies. Each offense carries a potential 3 to 10 year sentence. But Sorrell could also get another 10 years on each offense for being a repeat violent offender (prior armed robbery, escape) - and his use of a weapon adds in a mandatory 3 years for each offense. All tallied, Sorrell faces up to 46 years, with 6 being all but certain for the gun specifications.
At the arraignment, the assistant prosecutor offered to resolve the cases today with the state recommending 16 years. Sorrell chose to consult with his court-appointed attorney first. Sorrell's future is not bright, as he has already been sentenced in one Indiana court to 20 years - and Sorrell expected to receive another 15 years at an appearance in Kokomo, Indiana, next week. At the hearing, Sorrell stated he was "not going to get out for at least 30 years," although that might be overstating it, as most criminals serve exactly half of their stated sentence under Indiana law.
Sorrell's bond was set at $100,000, but that was a mere formality given his Indiana sentences.
