Budget cuts: Arcanum Library to close on Mondays

The Arcanum Public Library will be closing on Mondays starting September 7th. Here is the official statement from the Library's website (printed with permission):

Dear Patrons,

As most of you are aware, we are now experiencing sizeable funding cuts from the state. The library board knew that cuts would have to be made somewhere which is why we wanted to survey the patrons. To those of you who were able to take the time to fill out the survey, we appreciate your input as to best serve you during these difficult times.

With regret, we have decided to modify the schedule of open hours for the Arcanum Public Library to close on Mondays until further notice. We hope that this will not create a great inconvenience for you as patrons.

We will be looking at potential fund-raising efforts, and we hope that you might consider volunteering as a Friend of the Library to help us. This fund-raising will hopefully help us cover the rest of the funding shortfall in our operations so that we can minimize any additional impact on services.

Thank you,
The Arcanum Public Library Board

  1. This is exactly what the Greenville Library should have done (and still should do). Greenville says it has closed Saturdays so as to reduce heating and cooling on two consecutive days. Why not Sundays and Mondays as Arcanum is sensibly doing? On Saturdays kids are out of school and most adults are home from work and both would likely use the library more. Where is the study on usage by day? Is this yet another case in Greenville of the Staff running the show rather than the Board?
