The best movies of 2000-2009 ... according to Jeff Marker (and DJ)

For those of you who don't know, Darke County native Jeff Marker reviews movies (and writes others movie-related articles) for the Gainesville Times in Gainesville, Georgia. Marker's new article lists his best movies of "the aughts."

Here is the list (and you'll have to click the link for Jeff's commentary): 1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, 2. No Country for Old Men, 3. There Will Be Blood, 4. The Lives of Others, 5. Memento, 6. Shaun of the Dead, 7. Jason Bourne trilogy, 8. The Incredibles, 9. Lord of the Rings trilogy, 10. The Dark Knight, 11. In Bruges, 12. The Royal Tenenbaums, 13. Food, Inc./ No End in Sight, 14. Lost in Translation, 15. Mulholland Drive, 16. Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, 17. WALL-E, 18. Harry Potter series, 19. Waltz With Bashir, 20. Magnolia, 21. Caché, 22. Traffic, 23. American Splendor, 24. Kill Bill, Volume 1, 25. Let the Right One In

Now that is an impressive list, but it's also coming from the "art critic" point of view. I consider myself to be a movie buff, but I have only heard of 16 of those movies - and have only seen 6. So with the casual viewer in mind, here's the DarkeJournal list of the best/most entertaining movies of the aughts: 1. Gran Torino (2008), 2. Gladiator (2000), 3. The Pianist (2002), 4. The Bourne trilogy, 5. The Hangover (2009), 6. 3:10 to Yuma (2007), 7. The 40-year-old Virgin (2005), 8. Saving Silverman (2001), 9. Superbad (2007), 10. A Beautiful Mind (2001), 11. Breach (2007), 12. Kill Bill I & II, 13. The Castaway (2000), 14. 21 (2008), 15. Unfaithful (2002), 16. Catch Me if You Can (2002), 17. Casino Royale (2006), 18. Meet the Parents (2000), 19. The Break-up (2006), 20. Wedding Cashers (2005), 21. 40 Days and 40 Nights (2002), 22. Mean Girls (2004), 23. Up (2009), 24. Disturbia (2007), 25. Inglorious Basterds (2009), 26. Shrek (2001), 27. Monster's Ball (2001), 28. Along Came Polly (2004), 29. Swordfish (2001), 30. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), 31. The Dark Knight (2008), 32. Finding Nemo (2003), 33. Panic Room (2002), 34. Van Wilder (2002), 35. Mission Impossible III (2006), 36. Cold Mountain (2003), 37. The Patriot (2000), 38. Friday Night Lights (2004), 39. The Notebook (2004), 40. Pearl Harbor (2001), 41. Remember the Titans (2000), 42. King Kong (2005), 43. Beverly Hills Chihuahua (2008), 44.Valkyrie (2008), 45. Pirates of the Caribbean series.

And the worst movie of the decade: An American Carol (2008); and best movie that doesn't fit the category of entertaining: Passion of the Christ (2004).

  1. cannot trust anyone who thought the royal tennenbaums was a good movie. Great cast terrible movie, I would guess he watched and liked Joe v's the Volcano as well.

  2. I confess to seeing There Will be Blood & No Country for Old men. One an Oscar winner, one a contender. I guess they were both great movies, because the critics told me so. Beautifully filmed with great actors. However, I prefer entertaining movies and like DJ's list much better! Any movie list that has Dark Knight AND the Wedding Crashers is all right by me.
