Ohio 's jobs numbers for December

Ohio’s unemployment rate went up to 10.9%, and Ohio lost 16,700 jobs in the month of December.

December Unemployment Numbers
  • U.S. Unemployment was 10.0% in December, unchanged from 10.0% in November.
  • Ohio 's unemployment rate was 10.9% in December, 10th highest in the nation, up from 10.6% in November, and up from 7.4% in December of 2008, one year ago.
  • The number of unemployed workers has increased by 196,000 in the past 12 months.

Job Loss/Gain as of January 22, 2010
  • Ohio LOST 16,700 jobs in the month of December
  • Ohio lost 155,000 jobs in 2008
  • Ohio lost 184,900 jobs in 2009
  • Ohio has lost 184,900 jobs over the last 12 months.
  • Ohio has lost 339, 900 jobs since 2006


  1. Ohio is not very business friendly and one of the top 10 states with the highest taxes.

  2. That is very true. No one can really try to blame Obama or Bush on this one. Ohio is very business unfriendly...remember those ads (maybe they're still running) encouraging business to come to Michigan?
    The powers in Columbus (not Washington DC) really need to figure this one out

  3. Ohio is the 12th highest state for unemployement. The top states for unemployment are MI, NV, RI, SC, CA while the states with the lowest are ND, NE, SD, IA, KS, OK, MT. Ohio ranks 7th in US population.

    I've looked at some different statistics including industry, population, and workplace unionization, but haven't seen clear cut connections. I curious to hear other opinions. What are 11 states doing worse than us, and what are 38 states doing better?
