This Paleo point was found by DarkeJournal reader E.H. along Route 118 in Greenville. It is around 9,000 to 10,000 years old and is made of flint found along the Ohio River in Harrison County, Indiana.
All "arrowheads" found in Darke County are made of flint from out of county, because there are no flint outcrops here. The Paleo people were highly mobile, and most artifacts from the 10,000 year-ago period were brought from places so remote that some of the raw material they used is unidentifiable.
The raw material in the pictured artifact is identifiable, even though it is highly patinated.

EH, who are you?! I get excited about finds like this. To think, 10,000 years ago! 9500 years before Columbus discovered America. 8000 years before Christ. Wow. Sorry for the extreme excitement, but that is really cool.
ReplyDeleteHas this been proven to be real? I don't in any way think that EH is lying about his find. I would just be afraid that I may have found a reproduction so I would have to confirm it with someone. Who or what organization would confirm such a find?
ReplyDelete9:09 ... we had this find independently authenticated by Indiana Jones. It's the real deal.
ReplyDeleteBy: LKM-Way too cool my dad used to collect arrow heads when I was a child. I only wished I owned his collection today. There were many pieces like this replica in his collection found in Darke Co-Ohio.
ReplyDeleteAwesome Indiana Jones!!!!!! He's so busy - how did he find the time?
ReplyDeleteNo one is making reproductions like that & randomly placing them in farm fields. Plus, repros are usually perfect & this clovis show usage.
ReplyDeleteThis appears to be a Clovis/Paleo point. If so, it might actually be more like 11,000 years ago! And EH... I am SO jealous. I've found a few rare artifacts, but never a Clovis point. Congrats!! :)
(See Wikipedia & "Clovis CUlture" for more info.)
They call the material Indiana Hornstone. Note the circular, bullseye pattern in the flint.
