Darke County isn’t the only place where Annie Oakley was respected and beloved. In 1892-1893 Annie Oakley and Frank Butler built a house in Nutley, New Jersey. Cody’s Wild West Show was just across the river in New York and perhaps they hoped that this would be a permanent home. Nutley seemed to be an artist’s enclave at the time, so the Butlers felt right at home. Annie had a stable in the back of the property for her horses. They joined the community in putting on shows for charity. The beautiful mural to the right was painted by Paul C. Chapman in 1941 on the south wall of the Nutley Post Office. It was titled: “The Return of Annie Oakley”. The Nutley Historical Society includes a page about Annie Oakley along with photos credited to Garst Museum.
Most of the Post Office works of art were funded through commissions under the Treasury Department's Section of Painting and Sculpture (later known as The Section of Fine Arts) and not the WPA.
