Multiple award-winning painter Sandra Cable-Barringer is part of a family of notable artists; her late father Roy Cable was a well-known artist, writer, and naturalist, and her brother Lee has gained acclaim for his wildlife and western art. Sandy says that her work is an artistic approach to realism. Admired by many local artists as a mentor and role model, Sandy captures the beauty of everyday objects, transforming her subjects so that her paintings appear to viewers to overcome the flatness of their canvases and attain three dimensions.
Scott Thayer is also a mentor and role model, although his students are youngsters who attend Franklin-Monroe School where Scott has taught Art for the past 11 years. His creative spirit not only inspires the young charges in his classroom, but also sparks his own talents. Scott uses various materials including wire, wood, and paper to create sculptural forms; his display at the Mill will include illuminated contour wire wall hangings which are among the most complex works he has completed to date. The clay pieces Scott has crafted for the exhibit are both functional and decorative, and are made using atmospheric firing techniques which produce unique surface decorations not possible in a traditional electric kiln.
