Stairsteps to nowhere?

From EH: Joe Grice, maintenance supervisor for Greenville City Park, asked me if I knew what the steps in this photo had once led to. I have no idea. The old dance hall would have been somehwere behind Shelter #3, but that was across the street. Can your readers help?

  1. I think there was a large fountain there - we used to jump in it

  5. There was a fountain and a sidewalk that went to the parking lot (swimming pool lot). We used the sidewalk to access the band shelter. They used to hold Homecoming Prep rally in the band shelter.

  6. It was a stimulus project. I heard it cost several milion dollars and put at least 100 workers to work for at least 6 minutes.

  7. The old walkway used to come down those steps to get to the level of the fountain and the seating area for the band shell.

  8. I agree with Bob, lead to Band Stand
Look in the 1972 year book and on page 3 there is a nice picture of three Sophmores frolicking in the swan water fountain near the snack bar..

  9. I remember the steps and a grand entry way leading to the band stand.

As to the fountain talked about look in the class of '72 yearbook and see it. Three young men frolicking in it.

  10. The swan fountain had an identical twin at the Greenville Union cemetery, both were removed and the two swans plus parts of the fountains where stored at a house on W. Park in Greenville. The house is for sale, the swans have been sold off in the past few years, but one of the fountain basins is still in the back yard of the home.

  11. I think the steps lead to the building where Greenville's community pride was stored. I believe it was removed about 25 years ago.

  12. The swan fountain and wading pool was a very hot spot to be on a hot sunny day when I was a child. My mother used to bring my sister, my brother and myself there to play in the water. The swan used to spout water out of her beak and it would splatter on the upper level and run down like a water falls all around the fountain. It was a really great place at one time, but like so many things it isn't good enough for the folks of Greenville anymore. Newer always seems to be better is how most of Greenville seems to feel. As for the steps they did lead down to a sidewalk that took you to the band shelter but they got rid of the sidewalk as well.

  14. So the conclusion is the steps were just the sidewalk and when they removed the sidewalk they kept 4 random stairs to screw with us?
