FY2010 funding from the NEA totaled $1,023,600. The FY2010/2011 biennial state appropriation was $13,188,578 as passed in July 2009. This represents a 38 percent reduction from the final 2008/2009 appropriation of $21.3 million and a 47 percent reduction from the original 2008/2009 appropriation of $24.9 million. The OAC budget is less than one twenty-fifth of one percent of the total state budget of $50.5 billion. Ohio Arts Council grants are awarded on a matching basis; organizations that receive OAC funds are required to match state tax dollars with additional public and private funds. In fiscal year 2009 the OAC awarded $8,107,467 to artists, schools and organizations producing or presenting arts programming; the OAC received $17,399,042 in requests for support, and was able to grant 47 percent of the dollars requested. The OAC Board is composed of 15 voting members appointed by the governor and four non-voting members, two each from the Ohio Senate and the House of Representatives.
The Ohio Arts Council is a state agency that provides voice and leadership through the arts to enrich lives and build vibrant, creative communities. With funds from the Ohio Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts, the OAC provides financial assistance to artists, arts organizations, schools and other entities engaged in cultural programming to strengthen Ohio culturally, educationally, and economically.
