Does the cool fall weather make you reminisce about your own days of riding the school bus, sharpening pencils and packing your lunchbox?
Council on Rural Services offers volunteers the opportunity to relive their school days by riding buses with children, ensuring they arrive at school and home safely. Assist children in getting in and out of their seats, ensure the aisle stays clear, interact with children, and assist children with getting on and off the bus. Act as liaison between teachers and parents and help in emergencies as needed. Volunteers may serve on a regular basis during a morning, mid-day and late afternoon shifts. Volunteers must be at least 21 years old and possess a high school diploma or equivalent. A criminal background check and physical are provided. Volunteers should be friendly, patient and flexible and genuinely enjoy working with children and families.
“These volunteers provide a positive connection for children who may not receive a lot of positive interaction at home,” says Karen Kuras, Education Specialist for Council on Rural Services. “The relationships with these volunteers can make the kids feel better about themselves and create a more positive experience for everybody. Their work also allows time for teachers and staff to spend time together to plan for their classrooms.”
