What happened on November 10, 1975 (submitted by Elaine Holzapfel)

The huge freighter Edmund Fitzgerald sank to the bottom of Lake Superior on Nov. 10, 1975, apparently the victim of a rogue wave in the midst of a violent gale.  As Gordon Lightfoot said, "The good ship and true was a bone to be chewed when the gales of November came early."  The Fitzgerald now rests in two sections on the floor of the lake.  The boat had been carrying iron ore in the form of taconite pellets when she sank 17 miles from the safety of Whitefish Bay.  The ship's bell, retrieved by divers in 1995, can be seen in the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Lightfoot again: "Superior, they say, never gives up her dead when the gales of November come early."  True enough, none of the bodies of the 29 crew members were ever recovered.
