GREENVILLE AREA DOG CLUB OFFERS DOG TRAINING CLASSES

The Greenville Area Dog Club is offering agility, obedience, rally obedience, and conformation classes beginning the first week in January, 2011.  “Our move to a new building allows us to offer a variety of classes throughout the week,” said Charlotte Wisener, director of agility training for the Greenville Area Dog Club.

The Greenville Area Dog Club will be offering classes at the former U.S. Chemical building, located in the 5400 block of State Route 49, just north of the Stardust Motel.

Obedience classes begin Tuesday, Jan. 4. Classes offered include puppy (12 weeks to five months), beginner, intermediate, and conformation.  “Our puppy and beginning obedience classes are designed to teach basic house manners, grooming and care of the dog, heeling, sit, down, stay, and other commands,” said Barb Rhoades, director of obedience training.

Registration for obedience classes is from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 4. Orientation and classes will follow registration.

Dogs must be up-to-date on vaccinations, and participants must bring a copy of the dog’s vaccination records to registration. Puppies must have had their first two sets of vaccinations to enroll in puppy class.

Dog agility classes will be offered beginning Monday, Jan. 3. Classes offered on Mondays include Introduction to Agility, Fun/Course Runs, and Competition Agility. On Tuesdays, Beginners Agility will be offered. On Wednesdays, Intermediate Agility Class and Advanced Agility Class is scheduled.

Rally obedience classes, both beginner and advanced, will be offered on Wednesdays. Dogs must have satisfactorily completed an obedience class before enrolling in rally obedience.

Those participating in Greenville Area Dog Club classes are reminded that parking is available both in front of the building as well as near the rear entrance. The entrance for dog classes is located on the north side of the building, near the rear.

Those bringing dogs to class are reminded to feed the dogs earlier in the day, rather than before class.  Most classes use dog treats as training aids. Participants are reminded to bring small, bite-sized treats that can be used for rewarding their dogs.  Participants also are reminded to wear comfortable, tie-on shoes, and to dress warmly.
