New Ag Director Jim Zehringer will review Strickland/HSUS animal rights deal

The radical animal rights group HSUS made a lot of noise earlier this year about a proposed ballot initiative that would have had a huge impact on Ohio agriculture. The HSUS group advocates for silliness such as mandating that chickens should be allowed to run free (which may be fun for the chickens, but not particularly helpful for farmers and consumers).

As the deadline for a ballot initiative approached, HSUS and Governor Ted Strickland struck an agreement. HSUS backed off the initiative. And Strickland agreed to a set of animals standards, which included the phasing out of essential ag equipment, among other things.

Today, the incoming Ohio Ag Director Jim Zehringer said the agreement would be reviewed, as he felt the deal made farming cost prohibitive for young people. "We want to grow agriculture," Zehringer said, also pointing out that revisions were possible. Upon hearing these comments, HSUS president Wayne Pacelle immediately threatened a new ballot measure if any revisions were made. [Editorial note: come and get us HSUS. You weren't going to win anyway]
