The Wave Varsity Baseball squad moved to 5-4 in their first season in the GWOC with an 8-0 win over visiting Sidney Wednesday night. On Senior night, 2011 graduating ace Matt Orth went the distance throwing his second shutout of the season, allowing only 5 hits while striking out 13.
In his final regular season start before tournament play next week, Orth has compiled a 3-2 record in 7 games with a save. He has thrown 39.0 innings while only surrendering 5 runs on 25 hits, striking out 44 and only walking 5. His ERA stands at 0.90, an amazing statistic considering three of his six starts have been against powerhouse programs Vandalia-Butler (19-2), Troy (13-4) and Wapakoneta (11-4).
After leaving 2 runners stranded in the home half of the first, Greenville got on the board in the 2nd when Junior 2B Jon Edwards doubled to right field plating the first two Wave runs. Up 2-0 in 3rd, Junior CF Tyler Kuhn added on with a bases loaded triple that highlighted a 4-run inning that made it 6-0. The final two runs came in the 5th following walks by Senior RF Robby Detling and Kuhn, who would score on singles by Edwards and Freshman 2B Ryan Eldridge.
The Wave (6-13 overall) will finish the regular season with games tonight at Sidney, 5:00, and then at Fifth Third Field Saturday against Wayne scheduled for 1:00 depending on weather. Greenville will then host Wilmington Tuesday night, 5:00 at GTI Field for the first game of the Division 2 Sectional Tournament.
