The 2011 5th/6th Grade Cross County League Tournament was held at Stebbins Field again this year and hosted by the Greenville Girls Softball Association. The association takes great pride in hosting such an event and is honored to have hosted the event for a second consecutive year. The 5th/6th grade league is the biggest of the three Cross County Leagues as a total of 21 teams took part in the league in 2011 including teams from Arcanum, two teams from Bradford, Covington, Franklin Monroe, three teams from Greenville, two from Newton, Miami East, three from Piqua, two from Tri-County North, three from Troy, and two from West Milton. GGSA is a proud member of the Cross County Fast Pitch League which has three separate fast pitch leagues including 3rd/4th graders, 5th/6th graders, and 7th/8th graders. GGSA has 5 rec fast pitch teams this year as well as 26 rec slow pitch teams.
Winning this years tournament was Greenville #3 who fought their way through some tough competition to win the tournament championship. After winning on the opening night of the tournament, Thursday, June 23rd, with a win over Newton Red 13-1 Greenville #3 had to come back to face Franklin Monroe on Saturday morning. Franklin Monroe fended off a tough Greenville #1 team on Thursday 14-11 to get to Greenville #3.
It was a well played game between the two Darke County teams but Greenville #3 got the early round win over FM to advance on in the winners bracket with a 13-6 win.
Greenville then faced West Milton #2 and advanced with a second consecutive 13-6 victory to advance to the winners bracket finals and with that setting the stage for a big matchup against a tough team in West Milton #1 who had also made their way through the winners bracket with a perfect record. Milton #1 began the tournament with a 16-2 victory over Bradford #2, then went on to beat Miami East 13-0, and then beat Tri-County North 10-4 before meeting up with Greenville #3 in the winners bracket finals.
Greenville #3 and West Milton #1 squared off late in the afternoon on Saturday and the fans on both sides were not disappointed as both teams played very well. Timely hitting, good defense, and good pitching gave Greenville #3 the win 6-2 in the finals of the winners bracket which put them in the championship game late on Sunday. Milton #1 was sent to the losers bracket but would definitely be heard from again.
The two teams would end up facing off again in the championship game after Milton defeated Arcanum 11-1 to get to the championship game. But it was again Greenville #3 just barely holding the edge after beating Milton #1 for the second time in as many days with a big 5-4 win in the championship game. Greenville #3 played well all tournament long outscoring their opponents 50-18 and going 5-0 during the tournament. They ended up playing some of the top finishers in the tournament which included wins over Milton #1 who finished 2nd, Franklin Monroe who finished 4th, and Milton #2 who finished in 5th.
Arcanum made the most impressive run of the tournament by far. After losing to Bradford #1 9-8 in the opening round, Arcanum went on to beat Newton White 9-2, Troy Red 11-8, Tri-County North #2 8-6, Greenville #1 7-6, Milton #2 16-9, and Franklin Monroe 9-3, before finally losing to Milton #1 on Sunday afternoon. It was a great tournament by Arcanum and something they should be very proud of after taking home a 3rd place trophy.
Franklin Monroe also had a great run in this years tournament. After a close opening round win over a strong Greenville #1 team 14-11, FM lost to eventual champion Greenville #3, only to battle their way all the way back to a 4th place finish. They beat Covington 30-15, Bradford #1 6-5, and Tri-County North #1 6-3, before losing to Arcanum. Again, nothing to be ashamed of for FM who beat some very good teams on their way to a 4th place trophy.
The Greenville Girls Softball Association would like to thank and congratulate all teams, coaches, players, and parents for another successful season of softball in the Cross County League. The entire tournament bracket and results are posted at www.ggsaonline.com .
