  3. first off..the webpage that is showing off the new school is more like a huge advertisement for the contractor ...i could care less about what the other schools look like and how fancy they are...lets see more computerized pics of OUR school..not theirs...lets see some numbers on real operational cost from these new schools since the contractor built them lets see if they were in budget and that these new schools are a cost savor. WHY didnt the wonderful board of education have this presentation alot further in advance instead of just before the election....also..i noticed the treasure for this group is located on..COUNTRY CLUB DRIVE...woo hoo for you all that can afford that.. GET REAL....this will be a major economic disaster and we will be the laughing stock of the county if the levy passes and this school is built...I AM NOT SOLD ON IT AT ALL...VOTE NO....

  4. Looks great! I stand behind the new school 100%
But how can they afford to build it if East school cant afford a Greenville City school bus to take kids on a field trip a couple of miles away on a rainy day.

  5. I remember seeing the first picture in the paper from the first campaine and this one looks simular with the addition of a second floor.

  6. There are no buses used for any field trips, and it's been that way for several years now - many other schools in Darke Co. have cut field trips as well, and kids walk (Versailles comes to mind, and they have a new school). Not only that, if you took the time to READ the flyer that the kids from East brought home, it said very clearly that they would go to Shawnee Prairie "rain or shine" so dress appropriately.
Glad that you're behind the new school 8:57, but let's not change the subject matter of this article.... all it is a concept picture of what our kids and community could have if we vote YES, and believe me, I'm voting YES!!!

  7. This drawing isn't anywhere close to any image anyone would ever see. I mean, c'mon, where are all the old-beater cars and the bevy of pick-up trucks in the parking lot?

  8. The maintenance on the existing buildings has to be more costly than the maintenance on a new building. How much did the repairs to the jr. high cost a few years ago? How efficent are any of the heating units and windows in the existing buildings? I don't think the school can afford to keep maintaining buildings that are falling apart.

  9. School is gorgeous, agree it's needed---but we still DON'T have the money right now !!!!!

  10. All the comments about the building being so beautiful. A new building isn't going to raise the level of education our kids are getting and how smart they will become.

  11. Hummm... my children attend Greenville, and both of them get straight-A's (and in some tough subjects too).
Why do they do well? Because they do have good teachers, and we are involved parents that make sure they do their work and that education is a priority for them at this time in their life.
No, a new building isn't going to make them smarter or raise the level of education.
That being said, the facility is needed by the district and because it is a public school, we should all be involved and caring enough to support this levy. One of the reasons that some schools fail is because the parents (and some community members) fail to see what good can come out of working with those in the school system.
No, I don't agree with all decisions the board makes, and yes I've had my share of "what"?! with some teachers, but at the end of the day it's what we do as adults that will effect the children of the community now and in the future.
Even if I had no kids in school, I'd still be voting yes for this proposed new facility.

  12. For the kids that can get straight A's good for them.
But the kids that struggle and need extra help, good luck getting it.
I am also very involved in my childrens education but have moved them out of Greenville and now they have a 4.0 GPA.
I really wish kids that have learning issues it wouldn't get blamed all the parents because that's not always the case.

  13. 3:23...... you are bitter and it shows.

  14. Bitter is not the word I would use. Fed Up is more like it.

  15. I go to GHS and all the teachers give students the option to come in before or after school or during a study hall or lunch. The teachers make themselves very easy to access. As far as I remember that has been the case. It is up to the STUDENT to know when they need help and if they appear to be struggling I believe it is up to the parent to email the teacher stating their concern. GCS has great teachers. Not all good but you will have that in ay district. I am privileged to have the right to vote in November and I will be voting YES for the new school! We need this one!

  16. Look people I go to GHS, and I can tell you that the heat in that building sucks last year on the west end of the building some rooms didnt get up to 60 degrees and on the east side some rooms got up to 80 degrees. The water that WE drink is rusty sometimes and gross... And the whole technology thing is CHANGING we need new things new computers, smart boreds, clickers, and books. And I know this Building is for the lower grades but I want you all to know what the students think we need this for YOUR kids and our town!! Go walk though the Jr.High, South, East, and Woodland I DARE YOU TO WALK THOUGH THEM AND LOOK at them and see what YOUR KIDS HAVE TO DEAL WITH EVERYDAY!!! COME ON GREENVILLE YOUR BETTER THEN THAT we USED TO BE LOVEING AND CAREING!
    GO WAVE
AND VOTE YES FOR GREENVILLE CITY SCHOOLS

  20. I am small business owner in Greenville, a republican and I have been in contact with the administration about the operating cost of the new school compared to the existing structures. What the numbers show that Woodland Heights has the highest operating cost at $1.84 per square foot.

    East $1.28
    South $1.61
    JR High $1.46

They are stating the new K-8 building will cost $1.00 per sq ft to run. These are figures for gas, electric, and water only. I have been told that they will actually save $21,144 a year. I personally think the new construction practices will benefit into a much more efficient building and which in turn will make operating it a lot cheaper then our current setup. I personally spoke to the administration member and told him that if they build this school and then come back to the "well" (taxpayers) down the road for operating cost they might as well forget it getting passed. I am voting YES and you should too!

  21. We no longer live in Darke County, but still own a home in Greenville. Every time we come "home" I can't believe the deterioration in this town! Come on people, something has to give to save this wonderful community. We need to lift up this community. We need better schools to encourage industry, which will help the funding.
Quit crying around and do something positive for a "change"! VOTE YES

  22. Im voting No
Theirs just to much heating up with the board to trust my taxes with. Do you really think their will not be more raises and pickups when it passes.

  24. So the buildings need to be replaced, fine, but the problem I have is that this building will not be built conservatively... The school board will outdo themselves with the spending on grandiose extras...

    2 things come to mind:

    1) The mood lighting on the ceiling of FM's new building. Does spending money on custom made aesthetic features improve the learning? Does it add to the building's energy efficiency? Does it add to the structural rigidity, ensuring that building will last as long as the original?

    2) The offices for school board members in Arcanum's new school. Really? They felt that was necessary? How much time do they spend in those offices? Wouldn't that floor space have been better utilized for other purposes?

Also, I understand not wanting to cut positions, but does a small school like Arcanum really need 3 principals, 3 secretaries, 2(?) guidance councilors, and their secretaries for a district which is smaller than the individual classes that some schools graduate? Again I just see it as a waste having to have office for all of these people, when that money could have been used on the kids...

I'm sure I could come up with other examples of pointless spending, but I think you get the idea... If they are going to build a building we cannot accept waste on pointless extras...

  25. This is bit off my main message, but I feel this needs to be said too...

Before we throw our hard earned money into buying the school its every whim, I think there needs to be a VERY serious talk with students, parents, & teachers in the district...

I recall when I was in high school (not GHS, but in Darke county) and the school purchased carts of laptops, something about technology to improve our learning, etc, etc... At first it was kind of nice, being about to work on a class project in class, but the truth of it was by the time everyone got a computer, booted it, and started working, it was pretty much time to save, shut-down and put them away, so it was a bit pointless. The thing that really got me was, after the novelty wore off and teachers went back to normal lectures, the times we did use the laptops they were beat to $h*t to say the least, scratched screens, missing keys, programs deleted, auto correct options changed to turn ordinary words into profanities, etc... Not too long after that, regular classes never saw the laptops, I only ever saw them being used in the special ed classes...

So what I'm getting at is, if the school is going to want to buy all sorts of new "stuff" because they think it is going to improve education, they need to do two things:

    1) Make sure it will actually be beneficial, like I mentioned the laptops seemed like a good idea but were impractical for getting things done. The school also tried out a "smart board" that didn't add anything to my education either, in fact, it wasted away an entire class period because they couldn't get it to work, I don't know what happened to that expensive piece of junk, never saw it after that day...

    2) Get it through the heads of everyone involved that damaging/manipulating/mistreatment of things will not be tolerated... Again like I mentioned the laptops were trashed in a matter of months, and to my knowledge, no one ever got in trouble of any of it, except for one person who was caught taking the roller ball out of the mice in the library... Personally I think if a student maliciously abuses the equipment then he/she should be held responsible in the same way as having to purchase a lost text book... And if the teacher doesn't catch them/has no record of who was using which machine, the teacher should be responsible for the problem, and if the tech admin doesn't notice the problems and it inconveniences another student, then both the tech admin and teacher should held responsible for their negligence...

It’s stupid for the community to put in money if it is going to be wasted by letting students destroy things... Personally I feel that now that nearly 100% of students has access to some sort of computer at home, they do not need anything more than a class to teach typing/proper letter formulation, a class for excel/powerpoint/outlook/etc, and a class about using the internet to do work. There are other applications that need computers like drafting, but this ideology that students will somehow become Ivy League quality if they have computers/advanced technology in every classroom is silly and a waste of money... The ones that want to learn will learn even in the worst condition, the ones that don't want to learn still won't want to learn even in the best of conditions...

Rather than waste money on computers and stuff, I'd rather see students have the opportunity to start taking language classes in middle/elementary school, at least those are skills that can be used for a lifetime, never go out of date, and will give them an edge in a world that becomes more international by the day...

  26. For the kids is growing old!! A 57 million tax for 28yrs. shows our kids, Hay look what a visa card will get you, not what a retetion plan of our good teachers should say!! This would be just a start of more the same as needed (tax for the kids). How many kids grown, will stick around paying this and all the other tax heading to them to maintain pops home? VOTE NO!!!!
