November is National Diabetes Month. This is a time to remember the importance of blood glucose management for those who have diabetes and to focus on the prevention of diabetes. The global diabetes community will come together on World Diabetes Day – November 14- to raise awareness about the alarming rise of diabetes around the world.
Diabetes needs to be taken seriously since uncontrolled blood sugar can lead to serious health problems including blindness, loss of limb, kidney failure, heart disease and early death.
Nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes today including seven million who don’t know they have the disease. An estimated 79 million Americans have pre-diabetes.
The day-to-day activities needed to manage diabetes can be hard. But if you keep your blood glucose as close to normal that is safe for you – what is called your target range – you can reduce your chance of serious health problems. It is worth the effort. Don’t give up!
