2011 Holiday Horse Parade

Saturday night people flocked to Broadway in Greenville to see this year's iteration of the holiday horse parade, put on with the help of numerous local businesses and Main Street Greenville. Many stores were open for the event which saw several entertainment options for revelers to enjoy while they waited for the parade, including the main event: the arrival of Santa Claus!

  1. Always a nice event and fun.
I would like to commend the one of the groups...not long after starting the horse just didn't want to go and was bucking the carriage. Rather than try and make the animal continue, they turned everything around and went back to the parking lot. Very wise.
However, I would like to see solo riders under 10 being lead by a walker. I noticed one rather small, young child riding a fairly large horse alone, and the riders with her were not staying close. If this horse had gotten spooked at all (like by the blown wagon tire last year), I believe that there was no way this child could have handled it. As a rider myself, crowd safety must come first at events like this.
Again, nice event-see you next year.
    See you all next year

  2. Is it true there won't be anymore horse pardea because the city is charging fees?

  3. The evening of the Holiday Horse Parade brought a flood of memories rushing back to me. After turning the corner and stepping onto Broadway Saturday night, I was awed at the masses of cheerful Greenvillians and tourists alike gathered along the street and milling through the shops. It took me to a time, not that long ago, when Greenville was a true community that didn't divide, de-value, or disrespect it's fellow neighbors. I look at how we are now and feel as if, in desperation, we've turned on each other and blamed our neighbors for our hardships and struggles. When did the Grinch sweep into our town and steal away our Green-Wave spirit? I realize that negativity and anger is an easier approach to a smile and that a hearty "hello" can't fix our problems. But I do know that negativity is counter-productive and dangerously contagious.
On Saturday night I looked around and saw a spectacular sight that hopefully sheds some light on the future of our Greenville. I saw busy shops and eateries and have heard stories of the young folks who are venturing into business here in Greenville. I thought to myself, " With all this bickering in our town, you choose to start a business here? What do you see that's so great?" I believe that they see a town worth saving. Sometimes it takes a new set of eyes to see the good in a situation and I am thankful to those that can see a bright future here in Greenville and consider the story not in any way over. I am making it my personal mission to support these Broadway businesses because I, like them, love my town and want the story to have many, many more chapters.

  4. You must also remember that the negative Nellies are usualy the same dozen or so posters on sites like this and Advocate. They can bum you out, but they don't realize that they are the minority.
Horse parade was great. All the people were great. And I agree with the 1st poster here.... young kids riding alone need to be on lead no matter how experienced they are!

  5. It truly was a wonderful evening. We viewed it from the seat of a hitch wagon and it is really exciting to turn the corner by the Annie Oakley statue and witness the huge crowd that awaits. Greenville really turns out to see this parade and it really makes all the hard work getting the horses and wagon ready worth it. Thanks for making all of us horse-crazy folks feel so welcome. Now trot on down to Lebanon on Sat. Dec. 3rd. at 7:00 and see their lighted horse parade. It has over 120 horse-drawn entries and is quite a sight to behold. Merry Christmas!

  6. I do believe that folks should copy and paste the very well written article listed above that details the sense of community that Greenville could be capable of having. Spread it like wildfire because it speaks the truth! Thank you for the inspiration.
