Guest Post: Vote for Julie Monnin

Darke County Municipal Judge Julie Monnin has the courage to put people before politics and principles before personal concerns. This was evident when she became the first elected official in Darke County to speak out against CO2 sequestration, which threatened the area’s sole-source aquifer and the people who live and work here. Not only did she join the group that fought the project, but she played a major role in stopping it.

CO2 has since attracted a new industrial plant to Darke County, where it is being captured and used nationwide for beneficial purposes and products. What was once a threat has become a commodity, which is what the group wanted all along.

Her accomplishments do not end with CO2. Instead of insisting on a million-dollar building to protect judges, she initiated changes in the Municipal Court area of the courthouse that brought substandard safety measures up to State codes. Because of her efforts, this area is now a safer place for anyone who works for or visits her court. More importantly, she did this without putting a burden on taxpayers.

Judge Julie, as her friends fondly call her, is much more than a robe and gavel.

A caring person of strong faith, she is passionate about the law and is adamant about making the right decisions for the offenders who come before her. Not satisfied with sentencing and fining them, she started a unique community-service and rehabilitation program, where offenders learn job skills while working off their sentences.

Continually seeking new and creative ways to bring efficiency and effectiveness to her office, she also has been able to cut operating costs and return unused funds back to the county - - not an easy task during hard times.

During her first six-year term as Darke County Municipal Judge, she has worked hard to do much for many. If re-elected, she will have the opportunity to do more. Voters now have the choice to give her that chance. As a judge, who stands up for the rights of the people, she has earned her own right to a second term. Looking back at her past accomplishments, my husband, John, and I now look forward to voting for her in November.

Sincerely,
Anne Vehre
