Know Your Risks for Prediabetes on Diabetes Alert Day

Tuesday, March 27, is Diabetes Alert Day, and the YMCA of Darke County wants residents of Darke County to be aware of their risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes and preventative steps they can take today to reduce that risk. Currently, nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes and a staggering 79 million people have prediabetes, a condition where blood glucose is elevated, but not high enough to be diagnosed with diabetes.

While the nation’s struggle with obesity and type 2 diabetes is well chronicled, the amount of people with prediabetes is a growing and often underreported issue that can be prevented with changes in eating and physical activity habits. People with prediabetes are at risk for not only developing type 2 diabetes, but cardiovascular diseases, stroke and other conditions.

“Prediabetes is a serious condition, but a benefit of a prediabetes diagnosis is that there is still time to make changes to eating and physical activity habits to prevent or delay the development of type 2 diabetes,” said Gail Hostuttler, Director/CEO, YMCA of Darke County. “You don’t have to make the changes alone – the YMCA of Darke County can help you through by providing a place to be active.”

As one of the nation’s leading nonprofits dedicated to strengthening community through healthy living, the YMCA of Darke County is urging residents of Darke County to assess their risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes by visiting YMCA.net/diabetes-prevention. Individuals can learn how background and lifestyle choices help determine the ultimate risk for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Several factors that could put a person at risk for type 2 diabetes include family history, age, weight and activity level, among others.

A current Y member, Bev Baker, works hard to control her diabetes through physical activity and nutrition. And the Y is her favorite place to do it. “The Y’s group fitness classes like Zumba are my favorite, but I also enjoy seeing the people who encourage me when I come in for a walk or water work out. I know that when I skip a day, someone will notice. It helps to keep me motivated and accountable.”

Prediabetes prevention is just one way the YMCA of Darke County builds a strong community. Their Annual Community Support Campaign is now underway. When you give to the Y, your gift can have a meaningful, enduring impact right in your own neighborhood. Jeff Kniese, the Annual Campaign Chairman for 2012, says, “It is vitally important for our community to have a strong Y to continue to provide the many classes and services to our friends and neighbors.” He goes on to say, “ Without a strong Y, many people would not receive the support they need, and our community would suffer for it.”

The Y’s Annual Community Support Campaign is now through Thursday, April 19th.
