This year’s Darke County Ambassador Family is the Geesamans, Ambassador Preston was born seven weeks before expected and he weighed only 3 pounds 12 ounces, and was 19 inches long. Preston had multiple birth defects, which included a cleft lip and palate and endured three surgeries before coming home nine weeks after he was born. The Geesamans credit Preston’s survival to the great programs that still assist them today in caring for Preston.

The Geesamans are joined by Mr. Bill LaFramboise, March for Babies Chair, and Mr. David Compton, March for Babies Honorary Chair. Mr. LaFramboise, Executive Vice President for Greenville Technology Incorporated, and Mr David Compton, Publisher for the Daily Advocate, both know how important the March of Dimes mission is. As parents , they took their respective roles to raise awareness and important funding for babies who are born prematurely or with birth defects.

Premature birth is the most urgent infant health problem in the U.S. today. It affects more than half a million babies each year, including 31,460 in Ohio. Last November, the March of Dimes issued its annual Premature Birth Report Card, giving the nation and Ohio a “C.” The March of Dimes is committed to funding research to find the answers to problems that continue to threaten the lives and health of babies. Funds raised by March for Babies in Ohio help support prenatal wellness programs, research grants, newborn intensive care unit (NICU) family support programs and advocacy efforts for stronger, healthier babies.
