The Towne & Country Players is excited to announce its spring production of the exciting Stephen Swartz musical, “Godspell” to be directed and musical directed by Becci Miller of Greenville. Miller is a stage veteran and has been involved in numerous T. & C. P. productions including “Nunsense”, “The Secret Garden” and the “25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”. She is assisted by Shanna Camacho, also of Greenville. Shanna works with numerous community theatres including Richmond Civic Theatre. Not only is she assisting with the direction, she is also serving as choreographer for the production.
This Tony nominated musical, “Godspell” presents a unique and contemporary view of the life and times of Jesus Christ. His followers and disciples reenact parables and scenes from Jesus’ life through the music and amazing choreography. This Broadway hit even won a Grammy Award for composer, Stephen Schwartz. You may know him from his more current work playing now in Dayton, called “Wicked”. The same slightly different take on a well known tale makes all his musicals uniquely special.
Since Godspell’s premiere in 1971, this timeless musical has remained popular with theatre goers across America and around the world. This successful rock opera is a groundbreaking musical in the retelling of Christ’s life based on the gospel of St. Mathew. This retelling of the story uses music, mime, comedy and even slapstick to joyously tell the story of Jesus’ life. Musically, the styles of rock, gospel, and ragtime are used to celebrate the telling of this story. Noted songs from the show include “Prepare Ye the Way of the Lord” and “Day by Day”.
The story of “Godspell” speaks to the passion of Jesus Christ, to teach love and joy in the hearts of the people, rather than hate and sadness. It speaks to loving your neighbor, forgiveness, tolerance, and celebration!
