First Nature Day a Success!

Darke County Park District hosted the first Nature Day at Shawnee Prairie Preserve on Saturday, May 26th. Despite the unseasonably high temperatures, we had over 100 people attend! From the woods to the wetlands, families explored what Shawnee Prairie Preserve has to offer. Each child received a “passport” and had it stamped as they travelled from station to station. This completely FREE event would not have been possible without the help of many Darke County Parks Volunteers! They became “experts” on their station, from Box Turtles to Binoculars, there was so much to learn! Families could be found getting in the mud, digging for macro-invertebrates or grabbing a net and chasing down a butterfly. Many learned about tree and wildflower identification and then rolled over some logs to see how many critters they could find. Perhaps the biggest help, was those people that pulled garlic mustard, an invasive plant growing in the woods. Overall, everyone volunteering and attending Nature Day had an enjoyable day of exploring and learning about all different types of wildlife at Shawnee Prairie Preserve. Sound like fun? Stay tuned for information on Nature Day 2013.
