The swimming party was actually made possible through memorial gifts on behalf of Don Meyer made to the organization by the staff and Board of Trustees for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Don Meyer, who passed away earlier this summer in a car accident was a long time donor of the organization and an active member of his community. Don’s brother, Mike Meyer also served on the Board of Directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters for many years and continues to be an active advocate for BBBS program. Upon learning of Don’s passing, the board and staff felt that an activity for the volunteers and the children in the program would be a wonderful tribute to the life of Don, his generosity to the community and the generosity of his family and Meyers Garage. Meyers Garage and Drive thru donated the drinks for this event.
Group activities are part of the mentoring program for children from “at risk” homes. To date, the Shelby agency has 72 community based matches with a list of over 20 children in need of an adult volunteer. Volunteers are required to see the children two times per month offering support and fun, educational activities. It should be noted that match activities can be scheduled around a volunteer’s own calendar and offers a fantastic way to have a positive impact on a youth in our own community.
