October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month - Informational Coffee and Cookie Session to be Held at The Coffee Pot

Darke County Commissioners have declared October ‘Domestic Violence Awareness Month’ and calls upon citizens to recognize the importance of creating awareness for this issue, honor those who have survived domestic violence while mourning those who have been lost to the tragedy of domestic violence.

Domestic violence can happen to anyone of any race, age, ability, sexual orientation, religion, nationality or gender, crossing all socio-economic boundaries. In 2010, there were 56,904 victims of domestic violence reported to law enforcement; countless others did not report.

Communities, businesses, local governments, law enforcement and individuals need to work together to stop violence in homes, schools and workplaces. Advocates of all professional disciplines need to work together to provide coordinated services that improve the public understanding of domestic violence and enhance all services to victims and their children that will make our community healthier and safer. In observation, the Darke County Shelter from Violence invites the public for coffee and cookies at the Coffee Pot, downtown Greenville on Oct. 12, 3-5 p.m. Informational materials will be distributed and representatives will answer questions.

An opportunity to talk with previous victims involved with the local shelter will also be available. For more information, call 548-4679.
